How Do We Pay for All This? by Steven Keen
The level of debt is the disease. The wage-productivity gap is the cause and the financial crisis is the symptom. Wages and productivity grew together until the 1970s when credits replaced rising wages. ( http://www.capitalismhitsthefan.com)
Hyman Minsky spoke of "euphoric expectations" leading to debt-induced recession.

Maryland’s Marty O’Gov Turns His Back on Fallen Mayor Dixon!
Mayor Sheila Dixon of Baltimore, MD As a result of a plea deal, Baltimore's Mayor Sheila Dixon will leave office, on Feb. 4, 2010. She was recently found guilty of stealing $530 worth of gift cards intended "for the poor." Before the ink was dry on the agreement, however, Dixon's ex-crony, the former mayor, and now Maryland Governor, Martin O'Malley, was pretending that she no longer existed. Appropriately, the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said, "Hell is other people."

Avatar: An Anarcho-Primitivist Picture of the History of the World
Avatar is rich in historical allusions and James Cameron deftly weaves into the fabric of the film the core of the relations between humans and their world. Namely, the film is primarily about the two clashing world-views at the core of the relationship between the civilised and the wild. Informed and justified by the Darwinian narrative, the civilised perspective stresses competition and violence, in which the balance of power is achieved by the strong teaming up together against everyone rendered weaker for the purposes of conquest and use as resources, whereas the wild position sees life as a process of cooperation and the balancing of forces, not powers. This is the debate between Kropotkian and Darwinian evolutionary science as well as between the wild and civilised, between pacifism and oppression, between anarchy and imperialism, and between life and death.

Why we must cut ties to Israel
U.S. trade unionists began circulating an open letter in December to AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, challenging his attack on the movement for boycott, sanctions and divestment (BDS) against Israel and explaining why the BDS movement is necessary, especially in the wake of Israel's brutal assault on Gaza a year ago.

While the letter received tremendous support, it also came under attack from some quarters. Here, Labor for Palestine responds to these attacks and issues a call for trade union members and activists to add their voices in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The Bend city manager can declare an emergency any time the temperature drops below 25 degrees, and local shelters are full.

That allows churches and other buildings to house people overnight and keep them out of the cold. Gary Marshall is the fire marshal for the City of Bend.

Gary Marshall: "We have to remember that spending the night is a lot different than a day shelter. A day shelter you are just looking for a place to come in and stay warm. These people have the same right of safety as any of us that can afford to stay in a motel."

The Origins of Modern Socialism
The specter of socialism is again haunting the minds of the corporate elite, from the Americas to Europe and beyond. This, after decades of pro-capitalist campaigning from the corporate media, which has always confused "capitalism" with "freedom." But of course freedom and democracy cannot exist alongside tremendous inequalities of wealth — or next to corporations wielding absolute power over elections and governments.

These facts helped form the social movements in Latin America that now advocate 21st Century Socialism, a name that implies the prior century's experiments needed either updating or improving, while also implying that the general socialist "project" was progressive.

Iran's Revolution vs. The Democrats
On Sunday in Iran, mass protests were drowned in blood by government authorities; at least ten reportedly have been killed with hundreds injured. The events have been given ample coverage in the U.S. media, with the intention of further demonizing Iran's repressive government. Absent in the American media are the deeper implications of the protests, which, to anyone paying close attention, constitute a powerful revolutionary movement.

This movement has grown exponentially in a very short period of time. Although only beginning in June over allegations of voter fraud, the movement is now endorsed by millions of combative Iranians, demanding "death to the dictator," while they waive an Iranian flag that's missing the Muslim insignia. Massive demonstrations in the streets and university campuses have directly confronted police repression and in some cases have overcome it. The New York Times describes a scene found only in instances of revolution:
