Privatizing California: S.B. 792
Candlestick State Recreation Area, on San Francisco Bay If the state privatizes our Candlestick Point Park, then, as budget crises worsen at every level, what's next? What's to stop the privatization of every park in California? The federal government has, since the Reagan era, championed the privatization of everything from prisons to HUD foreclosure counseling, so, if California joins the rush to privatize, how long will it be before we're told we have to put up with a coal-fired power plant generating electricity for a uranium mining operation in Death Valley National Monument, just like those in Saharan Niger, because, otherwise, we just can't afford the park anymore?

Has the First Shoe Dropped Yet?
The phrase "still waiting for the other shoe to drop" usually evokes images of something happening so satisfying and desirable we can't help but wonder when the yang of the present yin will emerge. Those who elected for President Obama and the Democratic majority did so believing in change . It was believed believed much of what was promised would be followed through on. Among those things were stable guidance through what we knew would be a painful economic recovery, but also closure to the pain of the previous administration's taking their position for granted. We were all searching for the best way to tie up the loose ends of the past eight years. We wanted to be assured that which seemed so out of character for our country would not be repeated and that we could move forward now.

The chaos that we now witness is only the latest crisis of the global economic system. The system has not succeeded in keeping profits at the level of the postwar years. Vegan Week Report Back
Last week was Vegan Week. I have been a vegetarian for many years, but it has taken me awhile to go vegan. The connection between the suffering and exploitation of animals just seemed less concrete and more theoretical to me where eggs and dairy were concerned. It was obvious to me that the eating of flesh is wrong, but with eggs and milk, it seemed less clear. Recently, though, I've been learning much more about the lives of factory farmed hens, and dairy cows and their calves, and I wanted to make the change. I have also been learning a lot more about the health effects of animal protein, and I discovered that I had been suckered by many myths (ie, you "need" milk for calcium, you don't get all the nutrients you need with a vegan diet, etc). The more I learned, the more it made sense to go vegan.

World Bankers Agree: The Recession is Over…Maybe
Few would consider the opinions of the world's central bankers to be unbiased or even accurate. These self-proclaimed wise men of international finance didn't see the recession coming until it blew up in their faces - a blast that destroyed their credibility.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to hear them talk, not because they're fun to listen to, but because of "the messaging" that rich investors use religiously in placing their stock market bets, while the rest of us are given a calming sermon, so that the bankers' lackeys - the politicians - may continue ruining the country uncontested.

In 2003 Bob Avakian delivered this historic talk in the United States. This is a wide-ranging revolutionary journey. It breaks down the very nature of the society we live in and how humanity has come to a time where a radically different society is possible. He lays it all out in a nine-hour speech-and then goes into three hours of question-and-answer dialogue with the audiences. It's all there-full of heart and soul, humor and seriousness.

The IDF's siege of Gaza from Dec. 27, 2008 to Jan. 18, 2009, took about 1,400 innocent lives. To change the subject from Gaza, the IWs orchestrated a campaign against Mary Robinson, whom President Obama had nominated for a "medal of freedom." The IWs' campaign failed. Ms. Robinson got her medal and the focus remains on Gaza.
