Time to Stop and Stare
A look at work as it has been perceived down the ages-and a look at its mirror image. Idleness, once considered one of the deadly sins, now implies the right to slow down, go at your own pace, have time to stop and stare. Idleness is synonymous with wisdom and it confers an incomparable sense of well-being on men and women who embrace it.

Carbon output per household in PDX Hello, this article is something I am reading to write a separate book about why this society is both willing and complicit in trashing the earth's ecosystems, etc. "In his book, States of Denial, Knowing About Atrocities and Suffering, Stanley Cohen argues that this capacity to deny a level of awareness is normal...for people in an information-saturated society.1 He argues that 'far from being pushed into accepting reality, people have to be dragged out of reality'.

For the Iranian workers, only one solution: the class struggle !
The brutal repression of street demonstrations that have hit Tehran and the larger cities shows the determination of the Iranian government's Ahmadinejad not to tolerate any questioning of his political power. Accused of electoral fraud, the supporters of Ayatollah Khamenei and the outgoing president have responded with arrests, beatings and shootings; the police, the Pasdaran, and Basji volunteers headed by the Pasdaran are the instruments of the current repression.

Olympia Anarchists Sentenced for May Day 2008 “Riot”
Statement:
On Tuesday, July 21st, 4 local individuals were sentenced for smashing bank windows, "rioting", and thwarting the arrests of others on May Day '08 in Olympia. The court house in Olympia was packed with supporters. A ring of police stood between us and the judge, smirking and chatting with the prosecutor during recess.
The actual crime of this whole affair is the persistence of the state, its apologizers and witless functionaries, and the daily coercion which becomes concentrated against individuals who show resistance. This was displayed nakedly as the prosecutor and judge showed special enmity for our companero, Bryan, by ordering 120 days in jail because he held his head up during the proceedings intended for humiliation.

Local Law Enforcement Surveillance Plane Circling Overhead
A local law enforcement agency is regularly flying a white unmarked plane low over the Portland metro area, for hours at a time, just circling in repeated patterns. I have been witnessing this late at night and in the wee hours of the morning. It may be occurring during the day as well. It is time to put an end to this, for many reasons: our right to peace and quiet on summer evenings, nights, and early mornings; our right to privacy; our right to no warrantless searches; stopping wasteful city spending; and cutting air pollution and CO2 emissions.

If anybody has witnessed this too, your documentation and support in stopping this will be appreciated.

Painful Odyssey: A Conversation with Veteran for Peace Brian Willson
Brian Willson, a Vietnam war veteran and peace activist, is well-known for his courage and commitment to justice. In 1987, he and several activists attempted to block a train at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in California, which was carrying weapons destined for El Salvador and Central America. Brian lay down on the railroad tracks; the train didn't stop and ran over him. He suffered a head injury and both his legs were amputated. That didn't stop him. He has continued to speak out and act to end the horrific wars of the US empire in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Vietnam, and Iraq, as well as the illegal occupation of Palestine.

He will be speaking at a benefit for Iraq veterans against the war at 7 PM tomorrow, July 23, at the First Unitarian Church in Portland, 1211 SW Main. Donations are requested, but noone will be turned away.

A day in Gaza

July 20, 2009

The Viva Palestina delegation of solidarity activists from the U.S. was allowed to enter Gaza on July 15 with truckloads of desperately needed humanitarian supplies--but under the condition that the convoy leave again within 24 hours.

The delegation, led by British Member of Parliament and antiwar activist George Galloway, met one bureaucratic obstacle after another from Egyptian authorities. After negotiating an agreement with the government, the convoy finally left for the Rafah border crossing after several days, and with some of its supplies barred from getting through.
