Big Oil still too big for Arnold's "shared sacrifice"
Arnold Schwarzenegger calls for "shared sacrifice" in California State budget cuts. But who is he willing to sacrifice? Children who will go without health care, young pregnant women who will not receive counseling, working moms, students depending on state sponsored college scholarships, and people with disabilities, Alzheimer's, mental illness, and HIV/AIDS. And who is to too big to sacrifice? Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Conoco-Pillips, and BP. The Governor and California Republicans adamantly insist that the oil and natural gas companies will pay no severance tax for the privilege of extracting oil and natural gas that belongs to Californians, even as the State goes $25 million deeper into high interest debt every day.

In the interest of seeing the 'dialogue' so many have asked for, its nice to see Tim Calvert's recent statement regarding his organizing of an anti-semitic, racist event in Portland posted here. Viva Palestina Stopped at the "Peace" Bridge
July 13, 2009

On July 4, a delegation of solidarity activists set out from the U.S. to deliver desperately needed humanitarian supplies to the Palestinians of Gaza. The convoy was organized by group Viva Palestina, led by British member of parliament and antiwar activist George Galloway, who was part of a similar effort from London earlier this year.

The delegation arrived in Egypt and began assembling vehicles and supplies. But its progress has been hampered by Egyptian authorities, who stopped several buses filled with Viva Palestina members from crossing into the Sinai on the way toward the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. Organizers said they wanted to continue their journey on Monday with the cooperation of the Egyptian government.

Several SocialistWorker.org contributors are part of the Viva Palestina delegation and will be contributing to this journal. This entry was written by Karen Burke and Brian Lenzo.

Obama, Ghana, and African oil
Map of West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. Barack Obama's visit to Ghana is, most fundamentally, about West African oil and natural gas, and control of the corridors for transporting it through the Gulf of Guinea, on the West African Coast. Nigeria, the greatest source of African oil for export, is at the center of the African oil producing states bordering the Gulf, and the Niger River is the corridor for transporting Nigerian oil and gas, and now, oil and gas from landlocked Niger, as well.

The Coup in Honduras: A Teachable Moment for Obama?
Chief Judge John Marshall President Barack Obama's main duty under the U.S. Constitution is to see to it that the laws are "faithfully executed." By a UN Treaty, approved by the Senate, in 1994, torture is against U.S. law. No ifs, ands or buts about it. No exceptions! In Honduras, some apologists for the "de facto" regime, are pretending that they followed the law, when they gave their president the boot. Will Obama play the same "pretend game" on Torture? Stay Tuned.

I just found some maps which are very interesting. These maps are colored indicators of many things, including CO2 emissions per capita, or per person and CO2 emissions per acre. What these maps show, is that cities in and of themselves seem to be responsible for considerably less emissions than the suburbs. Compromising Democracy in Honduras
Can a solution to the crisis in Honduras itself the result of a military coup be "mediated," where on one side sit coup leaders and on the other a democratically elected but ousted President? Does any "middle ground" exist? Of course not. If President Zelaya unconditionally returns to finish his term in office, democracy will be restored; anything short of that will have democracy "compromised" into its opposite.

Obama is the behind-the-scenes organizer of this negotiated farce, even though he has no legal or moral right to undermine the democratic process in Honduras. His Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, brought the parties together and chose an "objective" mediator, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias someone who has obviously aligned himself with the United States.
