Earth First or Timber First?
Here's a heads-up on the upcoming Board of Forestry's meeting on Wed. June 3rd in Salem. In a nutshell, the Board will be deciding whether or not to move 100,000 acres of publicly owned land into short-term clear cut rotation.
It's a major shift from the current plan to TIMBER FIRST.

Obama's billionaires class warfare of rich vampires v. working poor:illegal get GM pension
Obama is worse than Bush--because people were duped to think he was at least better than Bush. In fact, Obama is worse than Bush. "While GM workers are losing their retirement health benefits, their jobs, their life savings; while shareholders are getting zilch and many creditors getting hosed, a few privileged GM lenders - led by Morgan and Citibank - expect to get back 100% of their loans to GM, a stunning $6 billion. The way these banks are getting their $6 billion bonanza is stone cold illegal." Obama worse than Bush: opens the floodgate to every politically-connected or down-on-their-luck company seeking to drain health care retirement funds. When a company goes bankrupt, everyone takes a hit: fair or not, workers lose some contract wages, stockholders get wiped out and creditors get fragments of what's left. That's the law. What workers don't lose are their pensions (including old-age health funds) already taken from their wages and held in their name. But not this time. Stevie the Rat has a different plan for GM: grab the pension funds to pay off Morgan and Citi [that have already received a third of a trillion dollar handout.]

The Misery of Economic Policy
The military Keynesianism since Reagan guided the streams of surplus global money-capital into the US as a "safe harbor." The orgies of deregulation and privatization cleared the way for the "assets inflation" of the financial bubble economy that fueled the world economy. With the global financial crisis, this deficit growth comes to an end.

PDX Está Presente: Resist Home Depot's prospecting in destruction of Patagonia's Rivers
Portland Represents: answering a call from International Rivers, requesting a stickering/photographing (Plus) campaign against Home Depot, which is prospecting on lumber from the "collateral damage" of Chile's destructive hydroelectric damming project
The Chilean economic interests that promote damming Patagonia's Wild Rivers At Risk claim that dirty dams are the answer to Chile's climate change challenges. These dams would destroy forests and livelihoods, and the associated transmission lines would be the world's longest clearcut!

We are calling on The Home Depot to cancel contracts with the Matte Group (CMPC) and the Angelini Group (Arauco), and to stop being hypocritical about their promise to help customers be environmentally conscious consumers while defending the sales of products from interests that promote the flooding of native forests and the destruction of a delicate web of life.

America's Nightmare: The Obama Dystopia - Manipulation, propaganda, imagery & PR wizardry
After 8 years of the Bush-Cheney nightmare during which we saw the wanton destruction of Afghanistan and Iraq, the cynical negation of centuries of Law designed to protect the most basic human rights and a foreign policy worthy of Genghis Khan, there came along the "Great Black Hope" in the persona of Barack Obama. The collective world consciousness turned uncritically to what was presented as a new era for peace, change and trust in Government.

Never before had one witnessed such an accomplished use of manipulation, propaganda, imagery and public relations wizardry to sell the public a man who was to take the baton from Bush and run with it in the race to destroy the economy, the rights of the people and help birth a nation totally controlled by those who have always lurked in the shadows of power.

The Dangers of Debt: A Conversation with Martin Sanchez of the Venezuelan Consulate

When: Sunday May 31, 2pm
Where: Portland Jobs with Justice, 6025 E Burnside St., Portland

"They got bailed out! We got sold out!"

That was the cry of workers protesting the closing of Republic Windows and Doors at the Bank of America headquarters in downtown Chicago in December 2008.

As American workers face the weight of crushing personal debt and as the US economic recession is forcing hundreds of thousands of workers out of their jobs, the question that sits on the minds of many workers is, "if workers didn't cause this recession, why is the government handing out billions of dollars in bank bailouts that we will be forced to pay for in the future?" What conditions will be imposed in the name of financial austerity? As politicians play the shell game, the social safety net threatens to unravel. And while we wonder what lies ahead, we must remember, our situation is not unique. This has all been done before.

The Deeper Origins of the Economic Crisis
For all the horror the global economic crisis has caused for so many people, one progressive consequence has emerged: many of these people are becoming politically conscious — searching for information to better understand their political and economic system. They want to know how things got the way they did and what can be done about it. Unfortunately, much of the resulting analysis has focused too little on actual causes, and too much on abstract financial details and other consequences of deeper economic problems.

Therefore, the typical explanation of the economic crisis goes as follows: depression-era financial regulations were tossed aside, and banks were allowed to merge into new institutions that then invented ways to transform debts into assets, which were gambled away on the stock exchange to the tunes of trillions of dollars.

All of which is true.

What's missing, however, is why.

9/11, Who Benefited Versus Gulag Gitmo?
Dick Cheney more or less admitted his group's guilt in his desperate attempt to take on Barack Obama's sane and necessary policy of closing Guantanamo. To argue that a military machine that spends up to a half trillion dollars a year doesn't have the where-with-all to guard prisoners already in handcuffs is to argue an extremely weak case. To think that the Republican party would have the jaded audacity to use the NIMBY excuse as a wedge issue is beyond the pale—given the enormous harm their public relations of Guantanomo and Gulag has already affected the world's perception of Americans and U.S. foreign policy.
