Sabotage -- Silicon Valley without 911 service, Internet, cell phones, and TV
Fiber maps show exactly where fiber runs are ... Interesting indeed.

From Global Guerrillas: Here's a great example of how easy it is to disrupt critical infrastructure, without computer skills (which is one of the reasons I believe, based on a broad number of examples, it is a more useful method of warfare). Vandals cut off cellular, Internet and landline phone service to 52,000 thousand people today in the San Francisco Bay area.

Bike the Pipe - this Saturday
Join friends from across Oregon this Saturday, April 11th on a leisurely 20 mile bike ride through the beautiful, ag-based towns of Forest Grove and Gales Creek. The day-long trip will be focused on education about the proposed pipelines for Liquefied Natural Gas, which threaten to cut through those neighborhoods and businesses. We will meet with farmers, homeowners and other community members to listen to their stories and see the land threatened by the fossil fuel project. This ride comes at a critical time in the legislative session, when drawing attention to the impacts of LNG is necessary to garner support for the anti-LNG bill and show that this is an issue Oregonians care about!

Santuary Sam Lives! (In prison... for the rest of his life....)
Thanks to the monumental efforts of animal advocates, two of the six sea lions trapped last week have survived. It seems the State did not have the nerve to kill Sanctuary Sam, after advocates named him for the NOAA mascott. I guess NOAA decided that it might be bad for their image to authorize the execution of their own mascott.

In Warrantless Wiretapping Case, Obama DOJ's New Arguments Are Worse Than Bush's
Friday evening, in a motion to dismiss Jewel v. NSA, EFF's litigation against the National Security Agency for the warrantless wiretapping of countless Americans, the Obama Administration's made two deeply troubling arguments.

First, they argued, exactly as the Bush Administration did on countless occasions, that the state secrets privilege requires the court to dismiss the issue out of hand. They argue that simply allowing the case to continue "would cause exceptionally grave harm to national security." As in the past, this is a blatant ploy to dismiss the litigation without allowing the courts to consider the evidence.

Strike for Climate Action - prison dispatch from Jeffrey Free Luers
Twenty years ago governments of the world met for the first ever climate talks.
The talks, then, focused largely on the growing hole in the world's ozone
layer (a hole that still exists today) and the need to eliminate CFC emissions
(which also still exist today though in much smaller amounts). The other
climate item on the agenda was global warming. Scientists warned that there was
growing evidence that the world was warming, possibly due to human activity
much like the root cause of the ozone hole.

Sea Lion C657, "Willy," Denied His Day in Court Today
"Willy" is a sea lion who was branded by the State with the letters C657. I'm sure it hurt a great deal to get this brand - these giant letters, taking up most of his back, were seared into his flesh more than two years ago. At the time he received the brand, his skin would have bubbled and scarred, and he probably had problems with infections early on. I know this, because I've seen other sea lions go through this, again and again. And yet... this brand was meaningless. Apparently, these brands mean nothing at all to the people who are busy burning them into the flesh of the sea lions on the Columbia.

Obama Administration quietly expands Bush's legal defense of wiretapping program
In a stunning defense of President George W. Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, President Barack Obama has broadened the government's legal argument for immunizing his Administration and government agencies from lawsuits surrounding the National Security Agency's eavesdropping efforts.

In fact, a close read of a government filing last Friday reveals that the Obama Administration has gone beyond any previous legal claims put forth by former President Bush.

What Obama's Trip to Europe Revealed
Declaring something a success doesn't necessarily make it so. We learned this at the Bush-led G-20 summit only four months ago, when global leaders were expected to do something far-reaching in response to the world-wide economic crisis, instead of chatting about it. When nothing came of the meeting, we were told that the summit "succeeded" because it "laid the groundwork" for the next G-20 gathering, recently led by Obama.

The four months between G-20 summits was one of rising massive unemployment and social misery for millions of people, creating an urgency that was unmet by the world leaders in London.

Message to the Police Officer
You know you don't work for The People you work for lawyers, who work for the richest. These same lawyers who've made government their private racket have turned the Land of the Free into a slave permit society. Driving a car, bearing arms, planting crops, fishing, adding onto your home-if someone who's otherwise peaceable and upstanding does these things without government permit you go in and wreck their lives. 'Protect and Serve' means protect and serve the lawyers.

Are you smirking, laughing at this? It's no laughing matter to the Americans trying to go about their lives, trying to survive in a collapsing economy, a society at war with them. Most Americans have a thin margin of survival and when you feel like slapping them with a ticket, or smacking them with your baton and throwing them in jail because they're asserting their Right to be left alone by the state you make more Americans your sworn enemy. How many millions of Americans are already mauled by the legal system you feed for the pettiest of reasons? How many millions more will you and your thin blue line of robbers, thugs and serial killers will you feed?

Do you see why what you do matters?

Italy: 2 700 000 people protest against the crisis of capitalism in Rome
Circo Massimo, Roma Rome - About 2 700 000 people gathered in Rome Saturday to protest what they say is the inadequate response to the country's economic woes by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government.

Demonstrators set off through the city's streets on five separate marches organized by the country' largest labour union confederation, CGIL.

Participants included several political leaders including Dario Franceschini who heads the main centre-left opposition Democratic Party.

Italy's economy, Europe's fourth-largest, could contract by 4.3 per cent this year as exports are hit by the global economic downturn, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said this week.

Unemployment in Italy in the fourth quarter of 2008 rose to its highest level for over two years as the economic recession began to take a heavy toll on the labour market, according to data issued this week.

The seasonally-adjusted jobless rate rose to 6.9 percent from 6.7 percent in the previous three months, reaching its highest level since the second quarter of 2006, but analysts said the worst was still to come.

Some 1.73 million people are estimated to be out of out of work in Italy. (dpa)
