Defending Canadian Arctic Sovereignty
Canada must defend its sovereignty beyond military means. The militarization of the Arctic could serve to only heighten tensions. Canada must reaffirm its sovereignty in the north with a strategy that includes diplomacy, science, geological mapping, as well as economic and social development in the region.

U.S. media blackout: 'Drug Czar' VP Biden's daughter filmed doing lines of cocaine
Bush did cocaine, no prison. Clinton lots of cocaine evidence, and his brother the dealer, no jail time. Biden's daugher, crime, no jail time I'm sure, Bush's daughters, crime, no jail time. The U.S. is a political aristocracy without any rules except for the poor. Biden coined the term "drug czar" in 1982 though his daughter is a coke head? Doesn't reflect well on his so called concern when cocaine flows thick in his own family?

Beyond Here Lies Nothing - Surging Further Into the Afghan Abyss
The political class has failed us. At every level, they have failed us. Republican and Democrat, they have failed us. Liberal, conservative and centrist, they have failed us. They have lived on lies, and lived by lies, for so long that they no longer know how to comprehend the truth, much less communicate it or - God forbid - act on it. And so they plow on deeper into the darkness, in zombified pursuit of pointless goals, heedless of the signposts warning of danger, like some demented wagon train dragging a load of dead mules toward the edge of a cliff.

Unraveling the Card Check Debate
Sometimes in politics a particular issue strikes at the core of deeper social-economic forces. Card Check - properly named The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)- is such an issue.

EFCA, if implemented as proposed, would allow workers at any work place to join a union simply by having the majority of employees sign union authorization cards. The current law mandates that there be a secret ballot election one month after the requisite number of signed cards are submitted. This one-month period allows employers to mount campaigns to discourage employees from voting for a union, often using conscious distortions and intimidation as tactics. EFCA would prohibit newly unionized workers from striking for two years to gain a first contract. Moreover, if a first contract has not been negotiated within the first three months, a Federal Mediator can step in and impose a contract. Currently, employers who are compelled to recognize a union do not have to concede to a negotiated contract at all; and if, after one year a contract has not been negotiated, the union can be subjected to a vote of decertification, which is often the case.

BREAKING NEWS: 8 Sea Lions Trapped, Six on Death List
Eight sea lions have been trapped. Of those, six are listed on the State's death list. There are spaces for 5 animals in a zoo, but the state is conducting... "health checks." Meaning that most, if not all, of these animals will likely be put to death. According to Rick Hargrave with ODFW, at least one of the animals will be put to death because, even if all are healthy, there is not enough room for all of them in captivity. No word yet on the brands.

The Obama Government: Take From Workers and Give to the Rich
These past several weeks have witnessed a stunning attack on working people, with the Obama administration leading the charge.

It started with Larry Summers, Obama's chief economic adviser, responding to the A.I.G. bonuses by pontificating about the sanctity of contracts: "We are a country of law. There are contracts. The government cannot just abrogate contracts." Like a mad dog pursuing its prey, he pounced on the conclusion that absolutely nothing could be done about the bonuses. Unfortunately, Summers voiced no similar outcry when the Obama administration, only weeks earlier, insisted that the U.A.W. contracts be renegotiated as a condition for the auto industry receiving a bailout, suggesting that a different set of rules applies to the rich than to the rest of us who constitute the majority and work for a living.
