Report Blames Bureaucracy and Politics for Failed Salmon Recovery
Despite being listed as endangered species and nearly two decades of recovery efforts, Columbia River salmon face extinction due to mismanagement and political interference, according to a report released today by the Resource Renewal Institute, a San Francisco-based think tank for environmental policy. The 12-page report, prepared by a panel of former government employees and scientists, calls on the Obama Administration to take immediate action to restructure salmon recovery programs at the risk of pushing the species over the brink. The report is available online at:  http://www.rri.org/index.php.

Will Obama Start the Next Trade War?
While campaigning to be president, Obama gave the general impression that he would act "cooperatively" to solve international problems, moving away from the Bush strategy of irresponsible "unilateralism."

But Obama took an aggressive stance towards China even on the campaign trail, including the accusations of "currency manipulation," "violating intellectual property rights," and "devaluing their goods." Of course, the average American cares nothing about these types of crimes, nor should they.

Obama’s Campaign Promises and the Laws of Capitalism
Throughout his campaign, Obama made repeated overtures to working people. He talked about job creation, a tax cut for the middle class, health care, education, the rescinding of the lavish tax cuts for the rich, clean energy, facilitating unionization, and the elimination of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for gays in the military. One got the distinct impression when he was campaigning that Obama was oriented to helping ordinary working people, who are now struggling to pay their bills, not the rich.

The Obama Crossroads: Neo-Liberal Coup or Responsible Government
When the U.S. Treasury gave away $700 billion to Wall Street banks with no strings attached in October of 2008, the Obama team gave a green light. A popular insurgence was soon silenced, with public wrath directed instead at the U.S. auto producers (and unions) who followed with a request for $25 billion. The auto companies ended up with a loan of about 1/50th the amount that went to Wall Street as a gift. The subtext message was disturbing. Wall Street firms produce nothing, no-one is required to explain what they are doing with all the public money they received, and no criteria of public benefit are applied.

Change (In Rhetoric) We Can Believe In
February 04, 2009 -- - The Obama administration will not produce any significantly worthwhile change in US foreign policy; little done in this area will reduce the level of misery that the American Empire regularly brings down upon humanity. And to the extent that Barack Obama is willing to clearly reveal what he believes about anything controversial, he appears to believe in the empire.

On the town hall crisis
The January 31st 'town hall' was an important — perhaps historic — mass meeting in response to the economic crisis.

Dozens of unions and other progressive organizations were able to attract over 800 people to hear an analysis of the crisis itself, proposed solutions, and a variety of workshops which included everything from labor rights, trade and immigration, and a "green economy." It is believed that this was the first such event in the country.

Trade Wars: The Rise of Protectionism?
Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently stated that the Buy-American provision not only threatens Canada, but all industrialized countries. There is a definite possibility that the situation could further escalate. The EU, Canada and other U.S. trading partners could in turn retaliate with similar measures. If some sort of resolution is not reached, there could be a rise in protectionism around the world, with the potential for international trade wars.

Syndicalism, Ecology and Feminism
According to the late Wobbly organizer and Earth Firster, Judi Bari, a truly biocentric perspective must really challenge the system of industrial capitalism which is founded upon the 'ownership' of the earth. Industrial capitalism cannot be reformed since it is founded upon the destruction of nature. The profit drive of capitalism insists that more be taken out than is put back (be it labour or land). Bari extended the Marxist discussion of surplus value to include the elements of nature. She argued that a portion of the profit derived from any capitalist product results from the unilateral (under)valuing, by capital, of resources extracted from nature.

World Bank Demolished Albania Village
A World Bank project meant to safeguard Albania's coastal zones was used to selectively demolish parts of a village in southern Albania and leave many families homeless, according to an internal report , which additionally notes allegations of corruption and efforts by World Bank officials to cover up the events .
An internal report of the International Development Association, IDA, obtained by Balkan Insight, shows that a World Bank project on coastal zones management in southern Albania aided the demolishment of informal settlements in the village of Jale, in disregard to the Bank's policies of forced displacement.
