In December of 2008, Seth will be going before the parole board for the sixth time.

The World Crisis and an Anarchist Response
Our time is also coming. But it should be noted that it has been many decades since anarchists--libertarian socialists--have played any significant role. We have been repeatedly outorganized and defeated by Marxist-Leninists (often by violent repression). This time (given the way state-Communism was discredited by the collapse of the Soviet Union and events in China) anarchism has revived. But this time the stakes are higher. The ecological-environmental crisis is worse than ever before. If a new depression ends in a Third World War, it will risk the nuclear extermination of all human life, as well as of our fellow inhabitants on the planet. We better not blow it this time.

Carnage: Killing Season in Cascadia
Carnage There is a place near the river, where I live, that used to be a forest. I used to go walking there. The light filtered down through the trees, into the deep, green shade where I walked. Kestrels and red tailed hawks prowled above the branches near the edges of this wood. Deeper in the trees, delicate wildflowers blanketed the earth beneath the ferns in the spring. Now and then, deer would leap from the sheltering brambles as I walked. Musk rats, otters, and beaver glided through the lazy water of a clear and sparkling stream that wound its way through here. Trout darted from beneath the grasses bending out over the water from the shore. It was beautiful.

Last spring, bulldozers and loggers and heavy equipment came in and mowed it to the ground. They left muddy tracks and a flat wasteland behind them. I heard the land was being... "developed."

Fur is "Green"
On this foggy morning, the day after "bobcat season" opens in Cascadia, I find myself sitting by a warm fire talking with a friend about strategy -- what is the best way to handle the resurgence of the fur trapping trade in Cascadia? (Trapping has more than doubled in our region in the past few years.) Bobcat season started yesterday, but the trapping of coyotes and other so-called "nuisance" animals goes on all year. Trappers here kill bobcats, lynx, raccoons, opossums, beaver, otter, bear, cougars, muskrats, skunks, and many other animals, including domestic dogs and cats. I am troubled by how many people are unaware of the extent of the fur trade right here in our own backyards. (It's a lot more common than you think. It's very possible that some of those missing house cats whose disappearances were blamed on coyotes are in that fur trim on your neighbor's coat. I'm not making this up.) So it is ironic that, on this morning, an ad was sent to my mailbox for the Canadian Fur Council:  http://www.furcouncil.com/ecological.aspx.

Obama and the crisis of expectation
With Obama elected President but not yet inaugurated, the question on everyone's mind is, "what's going to happen next?" Millions of people around the world are hoping that a Obama presidency will radically change the course of US politics, and with it, world politics. This is especially true for the huge numbers of mostly young volunteers working for Obama's campaign, most of whom had never been involved in politics before.

And while it is impossible to predict the future precisely, one can make an educated guess as to Obama's future actions, based on answering two fundamental questions: which social class is Obama and the Democratic Party going to represent while in office, and what are the current interests of that class. For example, if Obama were to act in the interests of the working class, a number of measures would be immediately taken, such as increasing wages, improving healthcare, funding schools, ending war, etc. If, on the other hand, Obama is going to represent the ruling class, we can expect policies similar to the Bush Presidency, who long ago proved himself to be a puppet for the banks and corporations.

Racism, Immigration, and Profit
People are rightly confused about the issue of immigration -- it is a complex phenomenon and many things need to be considered. Often times, there seem to be equally compelling arguments and statistics on either side of the issue, creating even more confusion.

Unfortunately, the immigration debate is often tinged or even marred by racism - usually subtly, sometimes openly. This feeling finds a receptive audience not because of prejudice, but out of fear. Indeed, racism cannot exist without fear. We believe that, at bottom, recent immigration-related topics -- from ballot measures to border fences -- directly or indirectly contain elements of racism and fear. Unraveling the basis for this fear, as well as those in charge of creating it, is essential if one is to make an informed decision on the immigration question. While doing this, we will attempt to uncover the deeper reasons that have created the atmosphere that has projected this issue on to center stage.
