first Gitmo show trial over, verdict guilty.
The first of the drumhead military tribunals to be held at Guantánamo Bay concluded Wednesday with the conviction of Salim Ahmed Hamdan on charges that could bring a sentence of life imprisonment. The military commission was denounced around the world as a travesty of due process with no legitimacy under international law.

The Bush administration celebrated the verdict. White House deputy spokesman Tony Fratto issued a statement declaring, "We're pleased that Salim Hamdan received a fair trial. The military commission system is a fair and appropriate legal process for prosecuting detainees alleged to have committed crimes against the United States or our interests. We look forward to other cases moving forward to trial."

The conviction sets the stage for a much accelerated and expanded set of show trials at Guantánamo, likely culminating in the imposition of numerous death sentences. If the Bush administration has its way, some of the highest profile prisoners, such as alleged 9/11 conspirators Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Ramzi bin Al-Shibh, will be brought to trial before the November 4 general election. This would serve to refocus public attention on the "war on terror" in an effort to give a boost to the flagging fortunes of Republican Party candidates.

Home truths you'll never read in the press. The success of the `the Surge' is becoming almost received wisdom in the US> This is strange since if the US strategy did win such an important victory, why do American generals need more soldiers, currently 147,000, than they did before?

Barack Obama in Berlin: "Send more troops!"
The flow of people from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column in the heart of Berlin seemed truly endless. On 24 July, up to 200,000 people came to Berlin's central park, the Tiergarten, to hear a speech by U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama. As with the "fan mile" for the European Cup, which had been in the same place on month earlier, there were jumbotrons alongside the countless beer and sausage stands.

The death of Solzhenitsyn & the passing of good prisoners.
As we all know Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn has died. With his passing we all have opportunity to comment on Gulags and the mechanisms of state terror & control used to create and maintain the Soviet system & also a duty to apply such criticisms to the mechanisms of state terror & control used to create and maintain Western hegemonies.

The best way to do that in my opinion is not to wax overly lyrical in phrase or wade needlessly deep in intellectual erudition. All we need do is cast a quick eye over how today the West as Russia prepares to lay Solzhenitsyn to rest.

Faculty Rally at UC Santa Cruz in Support of Firebombed Colleagues
Corporate Media On August 4th, at the main entrance to UC Santa Cruz, faculty members held a demonstration in support of their colleagues who were targeted with firebombs on August 2nd in what authorities are calling attacks by animal liberationists. Corporate news reporters, and their flock of more than ten white vans, were all over the scene to quickly sensationalize the story.

I spoke with numerous people to listen to their feelings, document why they chose to attend the demonstration, and in some cases to inquire about potential consequences to student privacy when organizing future events. The people I spoke with included researchers, a lecturer, professors, UCSC students, a Santa Cruz High School student that lives in faculty housing, UCSC's Executive Communications Coordinator, Guy Lasnier, and finally with UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal.

Please check out the interviews, with captions and more photos, at Santa Cruz Indymedia.

Anti-war demonstrations are ongoing at Port of Tacoma since Wednesday, July 30th. Protesters and observers have gathered at the port, despite harassment by law enforcement such as the demanding identification, arbitrary detention of pedestrians and use of physical violence. Six arrests have taken place at Port of Tacoma, all of which are unjustified and used to intimidate protesters from expressing their first amendment rights to oppose the occupation of Iraq.
Our Ports and Communities is scheduled for Saturday, August 9th at 4pm at Schuster Parkway. More information can be found at www.olypmr.org.
