Nader on the Record
Industry argues for public subsidy, but I think renewable energy technologies are moving very, very fast toward a competitive posture with fossil fuels. It's happening on its own. That's even without accounting for the horrendous external cost, military cost, pollution, health cost, and damage to land and water. Once you've incorporated all of those burdens, the cost comparison is not even close. If the geopolitical and environmental costs are so compelling, government tax credits can reverse the uneven playing field that has existed for decades to the advantage of fossil fuels and nuclear, and direct them toward solar consumers and the fledgling solar industry.

Yes, it's great to see young kids finally take an open, courageous and outrageous stand against the war. Here are some of the many color photos that I documented as an eye witness and participant.

is Portland Police Bureau turning into a THUG CASTE?
with the latest rash of boorish thug behavior by certain "rogue elements" of the PDX PPB
over the past few days of legitimate protesting, and the fact they have NOT been neutralized
by the so-called "management" at City Hall or PPB, one is left to wonder if indeed there is a
definite plan afoot to allow these rogues to form the central core of a PPB THUG CASTE?

With antiwar-activists being arrested and then renditioned out of the country
as being reported at below link, one is left to ponder Portland PPB's role in all
of this mean-spirited skullduggery and whether or not we--as decent citizens
who abhor such behavior--can wrest back control from an out-of-control band
of idiots and force Potter, Rosie Sizer and the other erstwhile so-called "managers"
of this band of loose-cannon idiots to do their jobs and rein in this poor whitetrashy
element within PPB? Let us become fully aware of what is happening and then rise
up and hector Potter, et al into doing our bidding...

March 20th Reportback
The student movement lives!

Todays walkout/protest for students was the most high spirited and most energized protest I've ever been to. 1500/2000 students walked out of school today in Portland, to show Oregon and the world that the student movement does have a voice and a loud one as well.

At 7:50 AM, several members of students for social justice and I passed out hundreds of fliers about the protest, as we had been doing all week. Word was getting around quickly at Wilson high school, and soon everyone was debating whether or not they were walking out. In our daily bulletin it read something along the lines of, "Students will not be excused by walking out, you are still skipping school, and you will fail any tests missed." A desperate threat, but not the worst of that day. The majority of seniors and juniors had previously announced that they had planned to walk out. Ironically, in English class we were discussing Malcolm X's radical approach to the movement just before the walkout. At 10:55 as students were glaring at the clocks anticipating walking out, the school administration pulled a daring move. They had conveniently planned a fire drill five minutes before the walk-out to throw it off. As confused students spilled out to the court yard, it only worked to our advantage. Hundreds of students joined hands to form a giant peace sign, standing in the circle of dirt left from last years senior prank of making a giant peace sign with flowers. Students were directed to the bus stops, and many drove, some even walked downtown. Three buses were crammed full of kids leaving Hillsdale.

today at the student walk out while demonstrating at pavilion square sergeant fender decided to ride up the ramp. there was a group of demonstrators standing on the ramp talking (not even actively demonstrating at the time). it was clear that sgt. fender knew that people were hanging out on the ramp before he even began his ascent. when the group of demonstrators didn't move out of his way he rammed one of them with his bike. when asked later why he hit the demonstrator he continued to state that the demonstrator had made a "bad choice" by not getting out of his way. that was fender's justification for his UNPROVOKED ATTACK. his badge number is 24910.

Fed Bailout of Bear Stearns First of its Kind Since Great Depression
The nation's fifth largest investment bank Bear Stearns nearly collapsed last week. It was saved only after the Federal Reserve took extraordinary measures to help JPMorgan purchase the eighty-five-year-old firm. The Fed has become the lender of last resort for other investment banks in a move that marks one of the broadest expansions of the Fed's lending authority since the 1930s. We speak with Nomi Prins, an author and former investment banker at Bear Stearns, and Max Fraad Wolff, an economist and writer. [includes rush transcript]
