Terrorism myths
I find this pretty interesting. We are fed a constant diet of fear raising warnings, spend billions and give up our freedoms to stop "terrorism". During the past six years, only 74 people have died in the US and UK combined. While last year alone, 16,000 US citizens were murdered. Something doesn't seem right. I also find it interesting that less than 1% of EU "terrorist attacks" were by "Islamists".

Clear Cuts Cause (yet another) Landslide
Earlier in the week, people traveling between Portland and the coast on HWY 30 had a long, long detour. The highway was closed. People who live near Clatskanie were even more inconvenienced... they were evacuated from their homes, and watched helplessly as a tremendous landslide came crashing down from the mountains, surging away with their houses and cars, covering the surrounding valley in mud, boulders, trees, and debris. As the mud and water continued to surge across the highway, everyone wanted to know why.

Granny Verdict: Not Guilty! A Victory for Free Speech
Grannies, Grandpa and Attorneys with the First Amendment Portland, Oregon. A Multnomah County jury found five grandparents charged with "unlawfully and intentionally causing substantial inconvenience to the United States" not guilty of Criminal Mischief in the 3rd degree on Thursday, December 13. Judge Richard Baldwin heard the case which stems from a silent vigil held by the Surge Protection Brigade, also know as the Seriously Pissed Off Grannies, on Good Friday, April 6, at the US Army and Marine recruiting center on NE Broadway. The jury began deliberations Thursday morning at 9:50 and deliberated for about a half an hour. After the decision, one of the jurors referred to the defendants as "heroes."

"Parasites in Fish Farms Threaten Salmon, Researchers Say"
 http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/13/science/13cnd-salmon.html

"Parasites that breed in fish farms kill so many juvenile wild salmon that they threaten the survival of fish populations in some rivers and streams, Canadian researchers are reporting."

"...The parasitic sea lice prey on juvenile wild salmon when they swim past these fish pens on their way from inland rivers to the ocean..."

"...But not everyone accepts this view of sea lice. According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, a government agency responsible for developing aquaculture while safeguarding wild fish stocks, 'no direct cause and effect" has been established between sea lice prevalence and salmon mortality. The agency says sea lice prevalence is 'a complex ecosystem puzzle' in need of further study."

"Brian Riddell, an ecologist with the agency, said in an interview that factors including fishing practices, logging and climate change can affect salmon abundance and added that it would be a mistake 'to become overly focused on a single point...'"

"...The authors of the new report said their findings show action should be taken quickly. It might take 10 salmon generations to accumulate large sets of data on the effects of farm-related parasite infestations, they said in their report, and that 'greatly exceeds the predicted time to extinction.'"

UN's Meetings in Bali: Climate Justice or Carbonacracy?
A protest in Bali against carbon offsets (taken by Ben Powless with IEN) Far from Bali, home in the United States, it appears the US environmental movement is so desperate that we can do little but focus on getting something, anything from our country's negotiators at the UN Climate meetings, who appear to be bent on utter inaction.

Yet the appearance of unmovable obstructionism hides a deeper truth.

The Legality of Justice Versus Blind Faith
Are political guarantees just so man words on paper to be used for political speeches? Who is ultimately responsible for enforcing principles of law in a republic? Given the reality that justice is very much a human concept, what can people presume, if anything, about such abstract words as "justice" and "fairness: before the law? What informs these legal meanings that people too often take for granted? Dedicated to the prisoners at Guatanamo who are or were innocent and to their lawyers who are attempting to bring justice to bear.

Bolivia on the brink
Today "my people", the pensioners, were on the streets. They blocked one of the major crossroads, Avenida Mariscal Santa Cruz and Calle Ayacucho, near the centre of La Paz. Slogans such as "Por culpa del ministro estamos en la calle" (It is the minister's fault that we are on the streets), rang out as traffic snarled its way down side streets.

Why should about 200 men aged 50 and over block one of the main arteries of the city? Victor Castro, President of the National Committee of Pensioners, an organisation that is active in all geographical departments of Bolivia, explained.

Here in Bolivia men can retire at 55 and women at 50. (Sounds good when compared to the UK but the average life span here is 47.) However, the Social Security Code states that if you want to, men can retire at 50 and women at 45. If this option is chosen then for each year before the official retirement age that you retire, you lose 8% of your pension. So if a man chooses to leave work at 50, he will lose 40% of his pension. The code also states that once you reach the official retirement age, the 8% lost will be restored.

The Constitution of the United States of America, 1787 (audio)
Many people might think that Cascadians who wish to get out of the Fascist American system are just out right anti-American.. well it actually maybe be the other way around. Most fellow Cascadians I communicate with strongly believe in the US Constitution in regards to its basic ideas of the rights of the person, legal protections and so forth. The problem lays in that the Corporatists and often American politicians do not believe in the basic values of the US Constitution. I have posted the Declaration of Independence, the Oregon Constitution and even the US Constitution in the past in this Indymedia and other online forums, but with the issue of waterboarding and now the CIA destroying evidence of criminal actions (videos of torture) as well as the eve of the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act we should all once again be fully aware of what is at risk with possible stepping on with Jack Boots on this old paper that was made out of hemp.
