Maxxam OUT of Humboldt! requires unity! 25.11.2007 14:55
NCEF!ers on drama detail during PL bankruptcy in TX
If Humboldt forest activists are ever going to succeed in evicting illegal clearcut logging pratices from the redwood region following Maxxam's '85 takeover of recently bankrupted Pacific Lumber, infighting needs to be mediated to prevent discord. Since internal conflict between activists is a favorite weapon of FBI "COINTELPRO", how do activists resolve disputes without losing time and energy needed for resisting corporations like Maxxam??

Are you a massage therapist? Are you tired of the lousy, abusive spas?
I have several friends and family members who are in massage and I thought it might be appropriate to get a general discussion going about the plight of our local massage therapists. These people are considered healers to those who benefit from their work, but why are they being so absolutely abused at the hands of both local and corporate spas?

IRAN: The Neocon Agenda to Sacrifice the Fifth Fleet – The New Pearl Harbor
The U.S. plans for an attack on Iran envision to sacrifice the Fifth Fleet in order to justify a nuclear retaliation. This is not a hypothetical scenario, but a real option being discussed within the U.S. Joint Chief of Staff cabinet. According to our sources, admiral William Fallon made clear that if such an order was given, he would refuse to follow it and would hand in his resignation along with the entire Centcom headquarter's. So far only the Navy and Army's superior officers' resistance has prevented the neoconservatives and the Air Force to launch the operations.

The Housing Crisis (Part 1 of 3)
Start a conversation pertaining to the failing real estate market and immediately homeowners inject escalating property taxes. To the Wall Street billionaire's dismay, it is not the cost of borrowed money (rate of interest) that has resulted in the current housing crisis. It is property taxes. Lowering the Federal Funds Discount rate will not solve the U.S. housing problem as it ignites inflation, fuels burdening debt, and further devalues the U.S. dollar.

Failing Senior Care System Burdening Families
The war is still the number one issue in the 2008 Elections, but even as we work to bring this war to an end, it is essential that the country look at real solutions rather than illusory for-profit "solutions" to our basic problems: the crisis facing an aging working class, poverty, homelessness, the cost of living, low wages, inflation, the recession, and many other issues on a national agenda of things-to-do. The government must take care of seniors and relieve their families, friends and caregivers of the financial burden.

The Oregon AFL-CIO Makes Ready for "Aggressive Labor 2008"
The 50th convention of the Oregon AFL-CIO gathered October 8110 in Seaside, Oregon to set the agenda for 2008-09. Every two years, delegates from state locals gather to discuss issues that face working people. Speakers this year included Oregon AFL-CIO president Tom Chamberlain, national president John Sweeney, Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards, and six-term representative from Ohio, Dennis Kucinich, among others.

It appears Oregon is being specially targeted by the national federation this year as part of a $53 million union dues-funded drive to "educate" people on getting out to vote for the Democrats. The state is in for an onslaught of organized labor like it hasn't seen in a while. As Chamberlain put it, "I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a fight." Unfortunately, this "fight" consists of removing Republican Senator Gordon Smith from office, and replacing him with a "friend of labor" attorney Steve Novick (D) or Oregon Speaker of the House Jeff Merkley (D).

Hundreds of thousands of students march for Chavez and "yes" in the referendum
They came in their tens of thousands, in their hundreds of thousands. They came from schools, from colleges, from universities, from teachers' unions and trade unions, and from the Social Missions concerned with education. They came in their red shirts with different names but all saying the same thing, Si in the referendum. Here in Venezuela learning is on the order of the day. Everyone is studying in one way or another, everyone is a student, so they came in all ages.

We gathered in the Plaza de Venezuela and as each minute passed we grew in numbers. In all parts of the gathering crowd there were sound systems belting out different rhythms and people were dancing, singing and shouting slogans. It was a carnival atmosphere with a serious message. The small group of students also dressed in red but with No placards quickly disappeared after having been confronted by revolutionary students shouting "No pasaran", they shall not pass.

We moved off chanting slogans such as "Eduacion Primero para el hijo del obrero; Educacion después para el hijo del burgues" (Firstly, the children of workers should be educated and only then the children of the bourgeoisie), "Obreros y Estudiantes, Unidos en Combate" (Workers and Students united in Struggle) and very importantly "Alerta, Alerta, Alerta Camarada, Que ya esta Preparada la Resistencia Armada" (Watch out Comrades, Armed Resistance is Ready). As the slogans were shouted red flags were being waved.

Iraq's Laboratory of Repression
The Bush administration is turning Iraq into a test tube for modern techniques of repression, from sophisticated biometrics that track populations to devastating weapons systems that combine night-vision optics from drone aircraft, heat resonance imaging and deadly firepower from the sky to kill suspected insurgents. The harsh repression surrounding the "surge" has drawn far less U.S. press attention. The grim reality, however, is that an increasingly desperate American military has stepped up its indiscriminate killing and jailing of Iraqis, especially "military-age males" or MAMS.

A plea from a suffering Turkey
Every year in the United States, 300 million turkeys are killed for their flesh. Almost all spend their entire lives on factory farms and have no federal legal protection.

Turkeys raised on factory farms are hatched in large incubators and never see their mothers or feel the warmth of a nest. When they are only a few weeks old, they are moved into filthy, windowless sheds with thousands of other turkeys, where they will spend the rest of their lives. To keep the birds from killing one another in such crowded conditions, parts of the turkeys' toes and beaks are cut off, as are the males' snoods (the flap of skin under the chin). All this is done without any pain relievers—imagine having the skin under your chin chopped off with a pair of scissors. Millions of turkeys don't even make it past the first few weeks of life in a factory farm before succumbing to "starve-out," a stress-induced condition that causes young birds to simply stop eating.
