"The power of Oaxaca´s Commune" New film by Contraimagen
dvd cover Synopsis: APPO (Oaxaca's People Summit) goes through a profound self-organizational experience, which demonstrates that mass movements are capable of resolving critical issues such as the re-organization of the mass media. The Oaxacan Women's Committee takes over a government radio station and Channel 9, an immense an important media complex that the former governor of Oaxaca, Ulysses Ruiz ran for his personal use. However, during the Oaxacan uprising these stations belonged to the people. The PRI has attacked, murdered, raped and stepped on the movement in Oaxaca, today the situation remains unresolved. Brad Will is one of the many martyrs that have died fighting for freedom. This documentary is filmed during the most intense struggle and demonstrates that the powerful and oppressor may murder over and over, but the hope of freedom never dies.

The Manoomin Project: Michigan teens restore wild rice, learn about racism, other issues
After a six-week drought delay and with a snowstorm approaching, northern Michigan teenagers this weekend planted wild rice seeds in a Lake Superior tributary for the fourth summer to help American Indian tribes bring back the once abundant grain. Since the summer of 2004, the Manoomin Project has teamed hundreds of at-risk teenagers with American Indian guides to plant over one ton of wild rice seeds at seven remote aquatic sites. The teens can plant wild rice in lieu of probation for minor crimes in juvenile court. Indian guide Dave Anthony of Marquette told the teens on Saturday they should feel good about restoring wild rice to Michigan's Upper Peninsula so local tribes no longer have to purchase the grain from other states. In past years, the project has received seeds from Wisconsin tribes but a record-breaking drought and low water levels delayed the mid-September planting until wild rice could be obtained from a Minnesota tribe. The teens, who are taught Native American language and traditional blessings, learn respect for themselves, nature and American Indian culture.

Venezuela: another coup in the works??
On Monday, November 5th, the campaign for the constitutional reform referendum in Venezuela was stepped up with the call by retired general Baduel for a NO vote. General Baduel was a close collaborator of Chávez and remained loyal to him during the April 2002 military coup which briefly ousted him. In July of this year he resigned from his position as Defence Minister and retired from active military office. His attacks on the constitutional reform are part of a concerted campaign by the ruling class to prevent it from being approved in a referendum which will take place on December 2nd.

The amendments to the 1999 Venezuelan revolution were announced by Chávez after his election victory in December 2006 with the stated aim of bringing the Constitution into line with "Socialism of the 21st century". They were then formally proposed by Chávez in July, discussed throughout the country and passed with a whole series of modifications and additions by the National Assembly on November 2nd.
