NMU President praises students for trying to get university "to do the right thing"
NMU Student Michael Rotter leads fight to protect the MI Native Plants Project With an environment research project at stake, Northern Michigan University students met with the campus president for an hour on Thursday and left with renewed hope they can save five acres of natives plants and wetlands. NMU President Les Wong says the students were well prepared, knowledgable and are trying to get the university "to do the right thing" but made no promises to change a proposed master plan that calls for destroying the Native Plants Project to build dorms. NMU EarthKeeper student team leader Michael Rotter and the heads of several other campus environment organizations presented Dr. Wong an ongoing petition with nearly 900 signatures from students who don't want tens of thousands of native plants uprooted to build dorms. The four-year-old research project near Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan includes insects, birds, and small mammals plus is expected to attract reptiles and amphibians. Students plan to address the NMU board of trustees December meeting, continue the petition drive, and call on other administrators recommended by Dr. Wong.

Sunday, October 28th at 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
Mushroom Hike to Gordon Creek

Our annual hike with Mushroom Mark is back! Join us as Mark DesMarets explains the mysterious world of mycology, including a hunt for your supper table. We will walk through the old-growth units of the BLM's proposed Gordon Creek Timber Sale. Currently this timber sale is in a comment period and the BLM is asking for input from the public. This is great way to find out more about a potentially destructive timber sale, while enjoying the wonders of the Mt. Hood's ecosystems.

Please bring: knife, and small basket or cloth bag if you want to take home some edible mushrooms.

Carpools leave from the Daily Grind (SE Hawthorne & 40th) at 9am. Please arrive punctually so we can check you in, arrange rides and give a brief overview of the day's plans. Remember to wear warm clothes, good walking shoes and to bring lunch and water.

Call the Bark office with questions: 503-331-0374

Stop the W.O.P.R
The Bush Administration proposes the Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR) to undo protections for Bureau of Land Management-administered public forests. This latest blatant crime against the people of Oregon is even bigger than the "Salvsge rider" of the 90's and Bush's "Healthy forests initiative".

The WOPR came as the result of a sweetheart deal between the Bush administration and the logging industry. It is a stark departure from the balanced approach of the Northwest Forest Plan.

We must act before it is too late!

Garden Blessing: Lawn now native plants garden at Marquette, MI Lutheran Campus Ministry
Blessing by Lutheran Rev. Jon Magnuson, Zen Buddhist Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg An interfaith "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held recently at Northern Michigan University Lutheran Campus Ministry house in Marquette, Michigan where the lawn has been converted to eco-friendly. Stones from three of the Great Lakes and a solar fountain are part of the Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) native plants garden that encircles the house. Prayers, incense, bells, and a tour of the garden were all part of the blessing ceremony by Lutheran Pastor Rev. Jon Magnuson, LCM director and co-founder of Earth Keeper Initiative; and Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, head priest of Lake Superior Zendo in Marquette - a Zen Buddhist Temple - and an NMU English professor NMU Student Michael Rotter, who created the LCM native plants garden, gave a tour to those attending the blessing. A rainstorm stopped just long enough to hold the ceremony for those present to walk around the LCM house twice - once during a prayer walk followed by the guided tour.

NYC Mexican consulate bombed
Early this morning explosives rocked the Mexican Consulate shattering windows and waking neighbors, nearly one year to the day since gunmen sympathetic to the Mexican ruling party assassinated anarchist activist and American independent journalist Brad Will. The murder of Brad Will sparked weeks of protest in his home of New York City. Demonstrators occasionally got unruly and left the Mexican Consulate on East 39th Street damaged. NYPD detectives have reviewed surveillance cameras from the area and believe that a lone man in his 20s hurled two small home made grenade-like explosive devices at the consulate building around 3:30 am this morning and left the scene on a bicycle.

'Sensitive' documents indicate Cheyenne Mountain's better for NORAD
John Pike, a leading defense expert and director of globalsecurity.org, says NorthCom's transition from the mountain is a "little difficult to understand," given that the nation has nuclear missiles ready to launch on "hair-trigger alert."

"Where the hell do they think they'll be getting the alert from?" he says of the transition to the Peterson Building 2 basement.

Pike also is puzzled by the move of Air Force Space Command's space control to Vandenberg, since the military in the past has argued that the expensive upgrades at the mountain required space and missile tracking systems to be "co-located," to avoid confusion that space debris could be incoming munitions, or vice versa.

Oregon Eco-Sabotage Cases: Government Informant Expected to Receive Minimal Sentence
Eugene, OR - On Friday, October 26, at 1:30 pm in Eugene's federal court, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken will sentence Jacob "Jake" Ferguson, the government's lead informant in the Oregon "Operation Backfire" cases. Ferguson is a self-admitted arsonist who participated in setting over a dozen fires. Ferguson is scheduled to enter a change of plea to only one charge of arson and sentencing will follow. The government is recommending that Ferguson be sentenced to no jail time at all, no financial fines or restitution, but simply to serve a brief period of probation. Judge Aiken previously sentenced other defendants in these cases to between three and 13 years in federal prison. Many of the other defendants were also given a "terrorism enhancement," even though none of the arsons resulted in any injuries or loss of life.

House Passes Thought Crime Prevention Bill
The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed HR 1955 titled the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This bill is one of the most blatant attacks against the Constitution yet and actually defines thought crimes as homegrown terrorism. If passed into law, it will also establish a commission and a Center of Excellence to study and defeat so called thought criminals. Unlike previous anti-terror legislation, this bill specifically targets the civilian population of the United States and uses vague language to define homegrown terrorism.
