George W. Bush delivered his next to the last annual address to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday. Taking the same podium that he used five years ago to condemn the world body to "irrelevance" if it failed to rubber stamp his plans for a war of aggression against Iraq, Bush cast his regime in Washington as the world's greatest champion of human rights and its most generous and selfless benefactor.
That the assembled UN delegates could sit through and then politely applaud such a hypocritical harangue from a man who is without rival as the world's greatest war criminal is testimony to the spinelessness and complicity of both the world's governments and the United Nations itself.
The recent chaos on world stock markets is a manifestation of the general turbulence that is the most prominent feature of the present epoch. In the last week we witnessed the near-collapse of the fifth largest bank in Britain. Thousands of angry people queued all day to withdraw their money from the Northern Rock bank, when it emerged that the bank had had to arrange an emergency loan from the Bank of England to prevent it from collapsing.
This was the biggest banking crisis in Britain since the 1930s. In fact, one would have to go back 150 years to find a run on a British bank. The last time there was a financial crisis of this scale was in 1866. It was a panic - as they used to call a slump in the 19th century. The dramatic scenes were completely unprecedented in the recent history of Britain.

People can deny it all they want.
People can rationalize it all they want. People can diminish it's implications all they want. People can pretend that American ingenuity and the Free market will save us. But one thing they can't pretend (with any credibility) is that we have not approached peak oil. Every leading geologist agrees that there are no new untapped reserves of any real significance anywhere in the world. Of the untapped oil that remains, most of it is "tar sands" that are extremely expensive and environmentally destructive to extract. Remember! Peak oil is not that there is no more oil left. It means that demand has exceeded supply and that the days of cheap oil are gone. The following article by Glen Morton examines the implications of peak oil and sheds some light into why the "powers that be" continue to ignore it.
Bush's "war on terror" quickly became Bush's war on Iraqi civilians. So far over one million Iraqi civilians have lost their lives because of Bush's invasion, and four million have been displaced. Iraq's infrastructure is in ruins. Disease is rampant. Normal life has disappeared.
Self-righteous Americans justify these monstrous crimes as necessary to ensure their own safety from terrorist attack. Yet, Americans are in far greater danger from their own police forces than they are from foreign terrorists. Ironically, Bush's "war on terror" has made Americans less safe at home by diminishing US civil liberties and turning an epidemic of US police brutality into a pandemic.

September 23, 2007 - Seven CIA veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and have called for a new investigation. "I think at simplest terms, there's a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke," said Raymond McGovern, 27-year veteran of the CIA, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates during the seventies. "There are a whole bunch of unanswered questions. And the reason they're unanswered is because this administration will not answer the questions," he said. McGovern, who is also the founder of VIPS (Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity), is one of many signers of a petition to reinvestigate 9/11.

I know there have been more postings in regard to the "unrest" in "Burma," I mean, even our own terrorist dictator is calling for sanctions against anyone else using violence to curb the will of the people, but I cannot praise the courageous journalists in that country enough. They are risking their very lives (unlike our own corporate shills who risk nothing but being disfavored or fired by the corporation) to get the word, and photos like the following out, to Norway, where they can be distributed to the wide world.

The government has finally given up on communists.
Now they're after the environmentalists. The Red Scare of the 50s is turning into the Green Scare of today. Don't let Bush, Inc. snatch away your rights, make you point a finger, lock you up, or label you a terrorist. The Northwest has been at the center of both incredible progressive activism and government repression, especially over the last decade. Come listen to how history is repeating itself and what we can do to fight it!

Millionaire trial lawyer, one time Senator, and former VP hopeful John Edwards, is now seeking the Presidency. Like the rest of the candidates, he seeks to differentiate himself from Bush and even from many in his own Party, as there is a much-deserved disgust with the political rulers in Washington. But is Edwards fundamentally any different the rest of the bosses' candidates? Can he really represent the interests of working people?
The war in Iraq is by far the biggest question on the minds of most U.S. workers. Edwards has presented himself as an "anti-war" candidate, even apologizing for his Senate vote to authorize the war, claiming to have been "misled" by the Bush administration. But let's not forget the facts: in the march to war, the donkeys marched right alongside the elephants.
Thousands of Buddhist monks have come in their long robes and have come in force - taking to the streets of Burma's towns and cities in protests which started last month in reaction to a steep rise in fuel prices.
