THE SKY IS FALLING -- ON KFC! PLEASE JOIN US!
Building upon the momentum of the successes achieved against the fur industry, some of the same volunteers in Portland are continuing the energy and applying our passion to relieve animal cruelty in the form of activism against the fast-food industry -- the focus is on KFC. We wish to welcome the PETA KFC Activist Liaison, Nicole, who is coming to Portland to guide us and tour our beautiful city before returning to the East! KFC is a self-declared fast-food giant and industry leader, yet they regularly cut the beaks of baby birds, pump chickens so full of hormones that they grow to the point where their own legs cannot support them, and remove the birds' feathers by scalding them alive in tubs of boiling water. During an undercover investigation at a KFC "Supplier of the Year" slaughterhouse in Butterfield, Missouri -- owned by George's, Inc. -- it was documented that live birds were being thrown by workers and crushed by metal dumping machines. Birds were often impaled by mangled transport cages, and workers were instructed to simply yank them out when this happened; PETA's investigator saw workers doing this and found dismembered limbs left behind in cages after the birds had been removed. Birds also got stuck in the spring-loaded doors of the cages, and workers whacked them with metal poles in order to push the doors open, sometimes impaling the live birds. One morning, PETA's investigator saw roughly 50 "red birds" -- the ones who are scalded to death in defeathering tanks while they're still conscious. On 26th April 1986, a nuclear reactor reached melt-down at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and beyond were contaminated. Around 150,000 people were evacuated from the contaminated area, and between 300,000 and 600,000 took part in the so called clean-up. Now, 20 years later the cover-up continues.

the national relevance of the Porltand raids
On the morning of June 12, at a Del Monte food processing plant in North Portland, Oregon, the Immigration Control Enforcement agency (ICE) sent in 160 agents in an over-the-top display of force against the plant's mostly immigrant workers. 167 of these workers were rounded up like animals and now face deportation in the largest raid that anyone can remember in Oregon's recent history. ICE agents also went into apartment complexes and at least one high school in search of more victims. Their actions were so egregious that even Portland Mayor Tom Potter was compelled to condemn them.

The number detained, as large as it is, only tells part of the story. The full scope of this attack and its effects began to become apparent at an emergency response meeting at a Catholic Church the same evening. From the up to 300 immigrant family members and their supporters, stories emerged of numerous cases where both parents of a household had been caught up in the raid, leaving their children alone at home with no idea what had happened. Many families will likely be split up and lives ruined as a result of ICE's attack. For those immigrants who worked elsewhere, they are now being faced with the the choice of going to work and risk being caught up in another raid, or staying home and risk losing their job. A shadow of fear has been cast across the immigrant neighborhoods as suffocating as what would be expected under a military occupation. "Everything is closed shut," Olga Escalera told an Oregonian reporter, "they are not opening the door to anyone. The drapes are down on the windows, the windows are shut. They are not answering their phones...there's so much panic, so much fear."

Canadian workers radicalize -- factory occupations increase
A recent report, compiled by the UK Office For National Statistics, compares the strike rates of EU and OECD countries. Surprisingly, traditional hotbeds of labour militancy such as France and Italy did not top the list. The major industrialized country with the highest proportion of working days not worked due to strikes or lockouts was Canada, the only OECD country with a higher rate was crisis-ridden Iceland. The high strike rate in Canada is now leading to further radicalisation as workers in the manufacturing sector begin factory occupations against plant closures.

Over the last decade an average of 208 working days a year were spent on a picket line for every 1000 workers in Canada. In the recent period, we have seen a mass general strike movement in British Columbia, a similar movement in Québec, the largest strike in Newfoundland's history, the CBC and Telus lockouts, the Toronto TTC wildcat and a cross-Canada strike of the Federal public service. This month there have been strikes of Greyound busworkers in the West, construction workers in Ontario, Montreal transit workers and Teamsters on CP Rail. These statistics show that in the last 10 years a significant portion of the Canadian working class has become personally acquainted with the class struggle. And yet, despite booming corporate profits, wages have remained stagnant or have fallen over the same period. Marx explained that social conditions determine social consciousness and the above contradiction inevitably leads workers to political conclusions.

Testimony Puts Smith in Political Debt to Rove
Report by Jason Leopold (truthout): To get Smith re-elected, according to sworn deposition by Rove's former exec assistant, Rove directed political appointees at Interior to release Klamath water for welfare farmers and forget the fish. This would appear to put Smith in Rove's pocket; and it offers yet another instance of Rove's playing fast and loose with federal statutes. This time it's the Hatch Act, which prohibits electioneering on fed property -- in this case, for the benefit of Senator Smith in 2002.

Chrysler, Globalization, and Labor's response
The UAW will confront Detroit auto makers at the bargaining table in July for a new national contract. In what will prove to be one of the UAW's biggest challenges since the union's birth, this contract will bear the imprint of the wholesale restructuring of the American auto industry. When Cerberus Capital Management paid $7.4 billion to take control of Chrysler on May 13, 2007, the challenge to the Union was official: "Are you ready to negotiate with a private equity firm which specializes in gutting troubled companies?" The UAW's position on Chrysler will undoubtedly influence negotiations with General Motors and Ford. Cerberus wants to cut costs to make money off its investment. Contract talks open up a golden opportunity for the bosses to cut costs at the expense of the workers on the assembly lines. Cutting benefits which previous generations sacrificed, fought for and in some instances, died for, is what is at risk for auto workers in 2007.

An interview about Venezuela
This is a good interview with Marxist author Alan Woods about the revolution in Venezuela.

You have openly expressed your admiration for President Chávez. However, you have said that you consider that the Bolivarian Revolution is "incomplete". What do you mean by this?

The Bolivarian Revolution is a revolution in the sense that Trotsky explained in The History of the Russian Revolution, that is, a situation in which the masses participate actively in politics and try to take their destiny into their own hands and change society from the bottom. But it is unfinished because it has not yet succeeded in expropriating totally the oligarchy and the old state apparatus remains more or less intact. As long as things continue like this, it cannot be said that the revolution is irreversible. President Chávez once compared it to the myth of Sisyphus, who was condemned to roll a heavy boulder to the top of a hill, at which point it always rolled back to the starting-point. The problem is that if this particular rock rolls backwards, it will crush a lot of people.
