CHILD ABUSE AND POVERTY
It is an article of faith among "child savers" that "child abuse crosses class lines." They tell us that we are as likely to find maltreatment in rich families as in poor, but the rich can hide from authorities. But like most child saver "truisms," this one is false. Prof. Leroy Pelton, director of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas School of Social Work, calls it "The Myth of Classlessness."

Brazil: Federal Police invade occupied factory CIPLA
The workers of the occupied factory CIPLA were surprised this morning by 150 men, heavily armed, from the Federal Police, who invaded the factory in order to arrest the members of the factory committee.

After almost five years of struggle to save their jobs and protect their rights, and for the federal government to nationalise the factories as proposed by the BNDES (National Social and Economic Development Bank) the workers now find themselves threatened by the federal police and with losing their jobs.

The U.S. Capitol at Twilight Rep. Parren J. Mitchell, age 85, died on May 28, 2007. He served the people of Baltimore, MD, for eight terms in the U.S. Congress (1971-87). He was fighter for Civil Rights, who opposed the Vietnam War and pushed for the impeachment of Richard M. Nixon. Today, by contrast, Maryland is stuck with U.S. Sen., Barbara A. Mikulski. She supports funding for the Iraqi War, with no conditions, and condones the wrongdoings of President George W. Bush.

Balibo, 32 years of Australian Cowardice
The infamous Balibo murders perfectly illustrate Australian cowardice and Indonesian barbarity. It should be stated from the outset that the truth of the cold-blooded murder of the Balibo five has been known since the day of the crime in 1975. The cringing attitude displayed by successive Australian governments toward the barbaric Indonesians has made Australia a laughing stock in Asia. All successive Labor and Liberal governments that perpetuated the lie of a tragic accident (caught in a cross-fire) are guilty of criminal suppression of the truth and criminal collusion with the murderers -- grubby oil deals notwithstanding.

Olympia City Council Says No to Impeachment
The Olympia City Council's General Government Committee voted 2-1 to not endorse the resolution calling on Congress to begin an impeachment investigation of Bush and Cheney. Jeff Kingsbury and Joe Hyer voted against the resolution, while T.J. Johnson voted in support. Prior to that meeting, Joe Hyer sent out an email to City Council members with his concerns, taken straight from the Pelosi script. Here is his memo with my responses.

Prior to that meeting, Joe sent out an email to all the members of the City Council. "I have researched and thought on this issue for several months, in addition to speaking with community members and local elected officials," he wrote. " In addition, I met specifically with Congressman Baird in Washington DC last week, and with Congressman Smith's staff, on this specific issue."

Much of what he said was the familiar Pelosi script—that it will be divisive, cost too much money, will not succeed, will generate a backlash that will make it hard to pass the Democrat's agenda, it will be seen as political, Bush is a lame duck so why bother, etc, etc.

Preparing for Martial Law, Part 2: Enforcement and Infrastructure
Police State USA Whelp folks, I hate to be the pallbearer at our country's funeral, but I am here to inform you, in case you missed it on Fox News, that the apparatus for martial law is being quietly, but steadily, implemented. If one has been paying attention to the laws that are getting passed over the last few years we can see the telltale signs that we are getting closer and closer to such a scenario. Not only is this government setting up the legal framework for martial law, but they are also setting up the policing apparatus and infrastructure to carry it out.

Zero Hour for Venezuela's RCTV
The expiration of Venezuelan broadcaster RCTV's public concession draws near: at 11:59pm on Sunday, May 27th, RCTV's concession will expire without renewal, and its space on channel 2 will be handed over to the newly-founded Venezuelan Social Television (TVes), which will begin broadcasts at 12:15am on May 28th. This sovereign decision of the Venezuelan government not to renew RCTV's concession has prompted claims that freedom of speech is somehow under threat in Venezuela.

But many discussions of freedom of speech rely on a fundamentally flawed assumption: that existing media outlets in some way embody "freedom." The debate surrounding RCTV is no exception. It is this flawed assertion that has been openly embraced by the Venezuelan opposition and equally openly challenged by those who reject efforts to paint the non-renewal of the broadcasting concession for Venezuela's RCTV as an issue of free speech at all (see my previous comments here).

Six months after attending a controversial Tehran conference, a Canadian professor charges the media and his own university with ignorance and intolerance."... I have never denied the Holocaust, only noted its propaganda power. Yet my university tolerated this assault on me. I was stunned by the university's illiteracy and bias. I was appalled by President Sean Riley's attack on my reputation and his spurious comments on the conference. In his December 13, 2006, statement he insinuated that the "conference" was bogus and that it revealed a "deplorable anti-Semitism" that the "St. FX community" found "deeply abhorrent" and contrary to its "traditions." Riley left little doubt that I was guilty of sullying my school's reputation. ..." -- prof. shiraz dossa

Bark Alert: Drinking roads, Gordon Ck hike, need minivan, Sunstrip, howls and growls
Dear Barker,

I hope you had a chance to read last week's Oregonian series on all-terrain vehicles. Off-roading is a fast growing past-time for many Americans and if you didn't encounter any on your last Mt. Hood back country adventure, chances are you will soon. The story you likely didn't see, however, was the State of Washington's Department of Ecology, conservationists, and local tribes asking the federal government to provide funding for either fixing or decommissioning the 22,000 miles of roads in the state's National Forests. Congressman Norm Dicks (D-WA) said it best, "If we do not fix our roads, we will have to drink our roads - after they slide into our streams." Here in Oregon, Mt. Hood National Forest alone has nearly 4,000 miles of old roads, and provides drinking water to over one million Oregonians.

So I have one question for you, Do you want to drink roads?

The Forest Service is holding two meetings next week on roads and off-road vehicles in Mt. Hood and they want to hear from you...kind of (see Howls and Growls below).

Hope to see you there,

Don't Cry for Venezuela's RCTV
As I write this, I am looking at a Venezuelan newspaper, El Diario, from February 10, 1992. The editorial that would have occupied half of page 2 is missing. Page 4 is completely blank. The contents were censored by the government of the then president Carlos Andres Perez.

The newspaper is just one of many horrible memories of the pre-Hugo Chavez days in Venezuela's "exceptional" democracy.

U.S. newspapers seem to overlook what Venezuela used to be like as they today discuss the actions of the current government. I have lived in Venezuela for most of the past 22 years and have never experienced such freedom as that which the Venezuelan population enjoys today under Hugo Chavez. That would include freedom of information. Never, in the past 22 years, has the mass media experienced the freedom it has had during the presidency of Chavez. One can freely buy anti-Chavez newspapers on streets and the airwaves and television channels are amply filled with anti-Chavez commentators.
