On Thursday, May 17th, oral arguments will be heard in federal
court in Philadelphia on what could be the last appeal of death-row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is known as the "Voice of the Voiceless." Lawyers for journalist and political activist Mumia Abu-Jamal will present oral arguments in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia on why Mumia, who has now spent almost 25 years on death row, deserves the right to a new trial. The court will decide after May 17 whether Mumia will be given a fair trial, life in prison, or execution. This case concerns, not only Mumia Abu-Jamal's right to a fair trial, but the struggle against the death penalty and the racist political repression of an outspoken journalist.

The discoveries made by the Human Genome Project have dramatically confirmed the position of Marxism, as expounded in Reason in Revolt six years ago. For decades, a large number of geneticists have argued that everything from intelligence to homosexuality and criminality was determined by our genes. The most reactionary conclusions have been drawn from these assumptions: for example, that black people and women are genetically conditioned to be less intelligent than white people and men; that rape and murder are somehow natural, because they are genetically determined; that there is no point in spending money on schools and houses for the poor because their poverty is rooted in genetics and therefore cannot be remedied. Above all, that the existence of inequality is natural and inevitable, and that all attempts to abolish class society are futile, since it is somehow rooted in our genes. This was a very good example of how science cannot be separated from politics and class interests, and how the most eminent scientists can be pressed - consciously or not - into the services of reaction. But leaving aside for a moment the social and political implications, in purely scientific terms this is a defining moment in history.
Here is your poem, Ana. I hope that I was not able to fictionalize you too much.

The worst lie of all is that we are not waging war but only taking humanitarian peacekeeping measures.. We wage war under the eternal terms justice, progress, freedom and humanliness while causing the opposite. In this way, terror spreads in the struggle against terrorism.
The Australian opposition leader Kevin Rudd is proving to be more servile, passive and accommodating than even the current Australian prime minister, John Howard - many would have thought it impossible to top Howard's effort but Rudd has proven them all wrong! Rudd, desperate to please all will eventually please none if he persists with his supremely passive, non-assertive and thoroughly despicable behaviour. It's simply not fitting for an aspiring Australian leader to unashamedly kowtow to the wishes of China over the relatively benign visit of the exiled theocratic leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama.

We can talk about the merits of Buffalo Field Campaign, of resistance in general, but if we are going to chastise people whose resistance we do not question for choosing not to suffer needlessly and passively, forgotten in jail, in the name of a caricature idea of civil disobedience, then we don't understand a thing.

German automaker DaimlerChrysler announced yesterday that it had agreed to sell majority ownership of its North American Chrysler Group to the private investment firm Cerberus Capital Management for $7.4 billion. The sale paves the way for the carve-up of the 80-year-old auto company and a massive attack on the jobs, wages and health and retirement benefits of Chrysler's 80,000 employees in the US and Canada.
Even before DaimlerChrysler officially announced the sell-off at a press conference in Germany, the United Auto Workers (UAW) issued a statement endorsing the sale of the company to Wall Street speculators, saying it was "in the best interests of our UAW members, the Chrysler Group and Daimler."
Marx's analysis of capitalism, unlike bourgeois accounts, is conducted from a historical perspective. In other words, Marx was keenly aware that during the march of history, one economic system, because of internal, irreconcilable contradictions, has been replaced by another until it too falls victim to similar contradictions. Of course, when one is born and matures within a single economy and lacks knowledge of any other system, one tends to take one's own for granted, believing that it will persevere forever. A historical perspective has the advantage of forcing us to rise above the provincial perspective that assumes economic systems are eternal. We survey from above the vast array of systems that have played their fleeting role on history's stage. For this reason, Marx's analysis of capitalism is specifically written with the purpose of unveiling its inner contradictions so that the possibility of its demise stands boldly in relief. This runs directly opposed to bourgeois portrayals of capitalism as "natural" and hence as unalterable as the law of gravity itself.
"Do I support Bob [Robideau] in his efforts to get John [Graham] railroaded into prison?" Hell No! I'd be a goddamn hypocrite if I did. Because I know just about as much as Bob knows about Anna Mae's murder and that is not a goddamn thing. I know Bob is full of shit and that if the truth be known he did not even know her. He may have spoken a casual Hello or something like that, otherwise he did not know her.

John Graham, an Indigenous man from the Northwest Territories in Canada, is being accused by the U.S. authorities of participating in the murder of Indigenous woman, Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash, another "Canadian". This happened more than 30 years ago. Both were members of the American Indian Movement [AIM]. Since when did the U.S. ever go after someone for killing an Indian? What's behind it? John Graham is currently awaiting an extradition hearing in Vancouver, scheduled for May 17th, 2007. He has been under house arrest there since his apprehension in December 2003.

The situation in Pakistan is marked by the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan, the insurgency in Balochistan, the nationalist movement in Sindh, the rise of fundamentalist terror, suicidal attacks, bomb blasts, female Islamic fanatical vigilantes challenging the writ of the state, cross-border terrorism in Kashmir, serious suicidal attempts on Musharraf's own life, the crisis of the judiciary and now the beginning of the civil war in Karachi and elsewhere. This is to name just a few events in the ongoing turmoil in Pakistan. Yet these brutal forces of black reaction that are trying to blow society apart are mostly creations of elements deeply linked the Pakistani state.
On April 14th in Portland Oregon, at the doors of NAFTA-loving Democratic Senator Ron Wyden's office, as many as 300 trade unionists came out in a spirited rally representing occupations that ranged from nurses to longshoremen. They were there to protest mass layoffs at a Daimler-Chrysler owned plant that manufactures Freightliner trucks. They were also demanding that Senator Wyden vote against the renewal of Fast Track which eliminates Congressional review, mark-up and oversight of trade agreements, while giving large corporations special access to trade negotiators. These trade unionists saw a direct connection between the mass layoffs and the free trade policies Fast Track has helped to mold.

The core problem of globalization is the dismantling of democracy. The elected are without power and those with power are not elected. The bonds between the generations burst. An "absolute asocial individualism" dominates in the most progressive states of capitalism (cf. Hobsbawm).

![]() With that as a foundation, what's actually occurring in this economy is the globalization of assets and wealth. That is to say, because the value of American labor is falling so precipitously, (due to the utilization of cheap foreign labor around the world), the value of the assets held by them is falling in direct correlation with their declining wages. It must.
It is an interesting article of the hypocracy of the "don't ask, don't tell policy", the arbitrary discretion commanders have in assigning discharges, and the flexible "morality" of military leaders.
