Advancing Paternal Age as a Robust Risk Factor for Autism
There are negative effects of men fathering babies past the age of 32. Their offspring are at increasing risk of genetic disorders due to mutations in the DNA of sperm making cells that increase with the age of the father. This paper postulates that the epidemic of de novo autism we are experiencing or the upswing in the number of children with neurocognitive developmental disorders is due to the increased average paternal age. First published in the EBD blog

Dr. Gilbert Burnham on the 654,965 Death Toll in Iraq
Dr. Gilbert Burnham One of the true horrors of the Iraqi War is the death toll of the civilian population caught up in that conflict. In Oct., 2006, "The Lancet," a prestigious British Medical Journal, published a study entitled: "The Human Cost of the War in Iraq." One of its co-authors was Dr. Gilbert Burnham of the Johns Hopkins U. Its stunning conclusion: 659,965 Iraqis have died in the war as of July, 2006! On May 8, 2007, Dr. Burnham discussed that report.

It would appear that Tom Potter is attempting to do the right thing in regard to the cop that killed a guy for parking in front of his sister's home last year. Trained to Harm: How the Military Abuses Its Own
An amazing indictment of the Army for the ways it abuses recruits and soldiers!!

Here is the paradox in a nutshell...
"..., a system dedicated to transforming psychologically healthy people into people capable of performing what in any other setting is considered a pathological act can't help behaving badly -- not all the time or in all of its realms, not monolithically so that everyone associated with it is scathed. But inevitably the ends deform the means, and inevitably someone pays. No one is talking about it, but what happened at Walter Reed to soldiers injured in war is not shocking at all if one ponders what happens at Army posts to soldiers injured in basic training."

Defendants Decry Government Attempt to Label Crimes “Terrorism”
Eugene, OR -- On May 15 defense attorneys representing environmental activists accused of arson and property destruction will argue to U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken that the "terrorism enhancement" provision of the federal sentencing guidelines - which would add an extra 20 years of prison time to each defendant's sentence - should not be applied to their clients.

Reid is now opposing the Iraq War because the U.S. is losing; he initially supported the war and backed the invasion. The war is another imperial adventure by the U.S. and there is a growing divide, by those supporters of U.S. imperialism, that a continued war is weakening U.S. imperialism.

On Internalized Oppression
It is a well-documented phenomenon that you can break a person or an animal's spirit and eventually the person or animal will begin to oppress itself in hopelessness. This is such a well-recognized condition that it has a name: Internalized Oppression. It occurs all over at circuses, in concentration camps, in jails, at welfare offices, in the homes of battered women...I have begun shamelessly stating "I refuse to feel guilty for being happy."

Snatched from the Jaws of Victory: Feminism Then and Now
I am reposting this essay from today's online issue of Counterpunch.org because, as a 37 year old man, my memory goes back to before "Third Wave" feminism. I remember a time when "bitch", often pronounced, "bee-atch", was NOT considered proper speech if one cared about being respectful and non-subjugating. It seems that being respectful and non-subjugating is not a priority for the media-embracing, "ironic", sarcastic, fashion-obsessed hipster culture so prevalent in Portland.

I brought up my issues with using the word "bee-atch" as common slang at a party recently, and was not well recieved, as you can imagine. Inspired by this awesome essay, however, I am going to start making more of a point, not less, of that and other egregious anti-woman behaviors that I see around me. My general sentiment: "Put down your f'n PBR and wake the fuck up you patriarchal jerk."

And I won't be addressing only men when I bring up such concerns.
