The First May Day
May Day, international workers' day. On every continent the advanced layers of workers and youth celebrate internationalist ideas and the struggle of the Labour movement. No surprise that the Tories in Britain tried to eradicate the holiday. No surprise either that workers' demonstrations are the focus of state repression around the world.

But where does the modern May Day come from, who started it and why?

May Day sprang from the struggle of the American working class. In 1884 the American Federation of Labor adopted the following demand:

"Resolved by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States and Canada, that eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from May 1st, 1886, and that we recommend to labor organizations throughout their jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named."

When communal councils meet workers’ councils in Venezuela
The workers in Inveval are pioneers. Not only have they succeeded after a long and arduous struggle to achieve the nationalisation under workers' control of their factory on the beautiful heights of the Cordillera along the Caribbean Sea, not only have they proven that workers are capable of managing a factory themselves, breaking the old hierarchy and capitalist division of labour on the shop floor, but they are also pioneers in integrating different misiones in their "productive work". Many of the leaders of the factory are also actively involved in the new military reserve, participating in the UNEFA, the university of the Armed Forces where they are trained in military matters. Above this they have been proposed by the Ministry of Light Economy and Trade (Milco) to play a leading role in the political training sessions on socialism in the other public industrial companies. This is part of the five revolutionary engines Moral y Luces (Moral and Lights) proposed by president Hugo Chavez at the beginning of the year. This "motor" is aimed at organising debates and political training on socialism two or three hours a week during working hours throughout the country.

La Brea Tar Pits: A Metaphor for the America Republic?
Tar Pit at La Brea President George W. Bush now has the power, thanks to a mostly cowardly Congress, to declare "Martial Law!" The Defense Authorization Act of 2006 gave him the green light. All he needs is a Reichstag-like incident and our Republic will be history. Like the animals who were trapped in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, it has been sinking for years. Author Chalmers Johnson is convinced the U.S. Empire is headed the way of Greece's and Rome's.

Washington County farm threatened by traffic from nearby industry
This plea for help was sent out today on the email list for the Portland Area Coalition of CSAs. CSA = Community Supported Agriculture. It's an arrangment where people pay a farm or farmer up front in the spring and recieve produce weekly through the Spring/Summer/Fall. CSAs are a sustainable alternative to corporate factory farming for several reasons, including: With no "middle man", a higher percentage of the paid price goes to the farmer; CSAs provide a distribution method for local produce; the people who buy shares are put in closer contact with their food source. In short, CSAs will be a vital component of local economies in the post-Peak Oil era, soon to arrive.

Here is the story of one CSA farm that is being threatened by the activity of the local government and neighboring industry.

We Ought Not Grow Cows In Dry West
It has been estimated that if all of the ranching that exists from the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the west coast of the United States was eliminated that only two percent of the national beef production would be affected. This is because of the nature of the landscape in the west of America where it takes about fifty times the amount of land to raise one cow as it does in the biomass-rich east. Given how much more delicate the countryside is in the region, it makes little sense to put cows all over and make the entire west into what Edward Abbey called "cow burnt." In case you are wondering: no, bison do not have nearly the effect that cattle do. Hoof shape and the migratory instinct lessen such impact.

Massacre in Mogadishu—war crime made in the USA
The brutal military siege against the Somali capital of Mogadishu constitutes a war crime for which the US government bears the principal responsibility.

While the mass media in the US itself has largely averted its eyes from the carnage, Ethiopian military units, backed and advised by Washington, have unleashed an intense bombardment of Mogadishu's crowded and impoverished urban neighborhoods, killing and wounding thousands and turning hundreds of thousands more into homeless refugees.

This latest round of fighting has pitted the US-backed Ethiopian forces and, in a lesser role, forces loyal to the so-called Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of former warlord Abdullahi Yusuf against supporters of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), which had administered the city and much of southern Somalia before the US-backed Ethiopian invasion last December. The siege follows a similar Ethiopian offensive against Mogadishu three weeks ago in which more than 1,000 people were killed, the great majority of them—then as now—civilians.

Democratic presidential candidates debate where to wage war next
In the first debate between candidates for the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential nomination, the leading contenders made clear that whatever their differences with the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq, they are all committed to maintaining the US occupation of the oil-rich country and that, if elected president, they would not hesitate to use US military power anywhere in the world to defend the geo-political interests of American imperialism.

The debate, which was broadcast by MSNBC television from South Carolina State University, included ostensible front runners New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Illinois Senator Barack Obama and former North Carolina senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards, as well as Delaware Senator Joseph Biden, Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. Also included were Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and former Alaska senator Mike Gravel.
