The Democratic Party and the Iraq War
The war in Iraq is the most important issue on the minds of American workers and youth. The ruling class is also increasingly concerned about the course of the war, which has now gone on longer than World War II. The seemingly endless stream of dead and wounded Americans and Iraqis, combined with the colossal costs - which mean deep cuts here at home - is having a profound effect on workers' and young people's consciousness.

Students Protest WarThere is an entire generation whose world-view has been entirely shaped by the epoch of war, revolution, and counter-revolution through which we are living. They live in a world where the perpetual "war on terror" - a war of invasion abroad and economic attacks against working people here at home - is the norm. It should therefore come as no surprise that symptoms of a profound questioning of the system are emerging everywhere.

Staggering anti-war display at Reed College
One of the most staggering—and peaceful—anti-war demonstrations are those 100,000 white flags in front of Reed College's Eliot hall this week. Each flag = six dead Iraqi civilians. Red ones are for U.S. troops. It was the work Sunday of local SDS members from Lewis & Clark and Reed College, activists, even passersby. Come help them do the same next Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m., at L&C.

What's next for the Teamsters?
In the recent election for union leadership, members of the Teamsters union were confronted with a choice. On the one side stood Jimmy Hoffa Jr., the incumbent president, who campaigned on the basis of forming a "partnership" with the employers and whose family has had long-standing relations with organized crime. On the other side stood the challenger, Tom Leedham, who has pressed for mobilizing the membership to act in their own interests and strike, if that proves necessary, in order to win gains.

The Election

Teamsters Logo Only 21 percent, or 294,000 Teamsters voted in the November election. This is the lowest turnout since the rank-and-file first won the right to vote on March 13, 1989. Hoffa received 65 percent of the votes cast and Leedham 35 percent, roughly equivalent to the 2001 elections. One of the most striking facts of the election was that, according to documents filed with the Election Supervisor, Hoffa outspent Leedham by $2,000,997. Yet only 13 percent of the overall membership voted for Hoffa, leaving 80 percent completely unmoved by the large amounts of pro-Hoffa propaganda.

Guinea: how the Unions Liquidated the Strike
After discussions with the authorities, religious leaders and a delegation of the CEDEAO (economic community of the States of the area) directed by the former President-general of Nigeria, the gangster Babangida, the trade-union leaders decreed the "suspension" of the general strike which had lasted for 2 weeks, as of Sunday midnight (02/25/07).
For his part, President Lansana Conté promised to name a new Prime Minister from a list of 5 names indicated by the trade unions and the opposition parties. The trade-union leaders speak about a great victory (while evoking a possible resumption of the strike), but it looks more like a capitulation!

BBC World has special report: Jail, the American Way
Because I am not currently in the Korporatist Republik der Amerika, I get the luxary of watching programs not normally seen by Amerikans or Cascadians at home. Right now running on BBC World is a documentary report on the growing Amerikan prison system. Unfortunately I can not find a stream for those in the Amerikan Police State to watch. So ask yourself "when is the US to be a Police State?" "With 2 million people are in the penal system at one time and the US of A having the biggest incarcerated population (only seconded by Russia) in the world, are we ready for a revolution yet?"

Mind you that I believe this documentary does not include county jails, those awaiting incarceration, those released because of crowded jails and in other correction programs.

Wikipedia has some good information as to illustrate the Penal Amerika:

The time is here that our gay equality leaders recognize that our civil equality will not be won in an endless contest of dueling bible verses. Religious teachings are based on historical conflicts of a Bronze Age mentality that has very little to do with us here in the 21st century other than as examples how ignorance should not be used to advance human decency.
