Chavez going too fast?
To outside observers who get their facts from the bourgeois media it would seem that Chavez is going "too fast". But the ordinary working people of Venezuela are demanding immediate action. They live in such conditions that they can wait no longer. An interesting comment by Michael Lebowitz.
________________________________________

"What's the rationale for allowing Chavez to govern by decree?" Why such a "precipitous approach"? As the apparent resident apologist (or, let's just say, on-site interpreter) for the Bolivarian Revolution, I get questions like this regularly from friends who don't know much about Venezuela but do know what they don't like (from reading the always unbiased and objective capitalist press). Of course, I'm not alone in this respect: others here get the same questions from outside: How can Chavez do this? How can you justify this? The implicit question, of course, always is -- how can I (the enquirer) continue to say (and think) nice things about the Bolivarian Revolution when HE does this? How can I (the enquirer) justify the process to my friends (colleagues)? A single party, rule by decree -- isn't this the road to Stalinism and to the gulag?

Ten students arrested in El Salvador after march against anti-terrorist law
Ten student activists were arrested on Wednesday, January 31st in San Salvador, after having participated in a march against the new anti-terrorist law proposed by the ruling ARENA party (the party which was in power during the dirty war and death squads in the 1980s).
The march, which saw the participation of nearly 2,000 students, started from the National University UES at 8am and ended at the National Assembly. Throughout the march, the students were closely watched by the Unit for the Maintenance of Order and by special agents of the National Civilian Police.

Remember the Baby Whose Toes were gnawed off by a pit puppy?
Back in December, news outlets across the country reported on aq lurid incident in which a pit bull puppy chewed the toes off an infant as its parents slept. Remember? Someone on this site even posted it as a comment to buttress fears about this breed of dog. Here is an interesting update, which was not covered at all in the corporate press. Apparently, like many stories of pitbull "attacks," it was a lie. It was not a pit bull "attack." It was a ferret.

IRAN. Chirac: "Teheran could be completely destroyed" - Stepped up US preparations for war
USS Bataan, steamed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday on its way to the Gulf In an interview given to journalists today, french president Chirac said: "France can not accept a nuclear armed Iran" and "Teheran could be completely destroyed." source: yahoo news germany  http://de.news.yahoo.com/01022007/3/atomwaffen-wirbel-chirac-interview.html )

At the moment a relentless and unmistakable American buildup for war against Iran is currently underway. Military preparations are being accompanied by a daily barrage of propaganda against Tehran issuing from US sources and relayed uncritically via a compliant media. The chief accusation currently being levelled against the Iranian regime is that its agents are supporting and arming Shiite militias inside Iraq to attack US troops—a charge that has yet to be substantiated with concrete evidence.

The CIA has published literally hundreds of books that spread its party line on the Cold War. A bit more embarrassing was Claire Sterling's book which advanced the now-discredited theory that the Russians were behind the 1981 attempt on the life of Pope John Paul II.
