Folic Acid Inundation Not Such a Good Thing After All - Especially for Vegetarians/Vegans
You know, about 9 years ago the US govt mandated that all grain foods in the US be fortified with the B vitamin folic acid. Their reasons seemed sound enough: it had been learned that a shortage of folic acid around the time of conception can damage fetuses. Specifically, babies were more likely to be born with open neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. But I remember at the time being concerned about the wisdom of supplementing an entire population in order to address a problem that, although devastating, affects such a tiny fraction of the population. (Even prior to the supplementation, the risk of spina bifida was less than 1 percent.) It seems that my concerns have been born out, especially for those of us who do not eat meat.

Gonzales: ‘There Is No Express Grant of Habeas Corpus In The Constitution’
Yesterday, during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales claimed there is no express right to habeas corpus in the U.S. Constitution. Gonzales was debating Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) about whether the Supreme Court's ruling on Guantanamo detainees last year cited the constitutional right to habeas corpus. Gonzales claimed the Court did not cite such a right, then added, "There is no express grant of habeas in the Constitution."

Specter pushed back. "Wait a minute. The constitution says you can't take it away, except in the case of rebellion or invasion. Doesn't that mean you have the right of habeas corpus, unless there is an invasion or rebellion?" Specter told Gonzales, "You may be treading on your interdiction and violating common sense, Mr. Attorney General."

Bolivia: one year into the Morales government
Popular assembly in Cochabamba on January 16

On Tuesday, January 16th, a massive cabildo abierto (popular assembly) in Cochabamba, Bolivia's third largest city, decided to remove the prefecto (regional governor) and forced the consejeros departamentales (regional councillors) to install a people's prefecture. In doing so the masses, who have been on the streets since the beginning of the year, went over the heads of MAS aligned leaders of many of the peasant and trade union organisations and directly against the advice of the MAS government which recommended calm, negotiation and keeping everything within the legal framework.

This was the highest point of a developing mass movement for the resignation of the prefectos of La Paz and Cochabamba who have sided with the opposition prefectos of Santa Cruz, Beni, Pando and Tarija (the lowlands crescent of Bolivia) in their struggle for autonomy from the MAS national government and to defend their right of veto in the Constituent Assembly.

One year after the election of Evo Morales (who was sworn in on January 22, 2006) the recent events in Cochabamba and La Paz encapsulate the contradictions facing his government. Morales was elected with a massive majority as a by-product of a long period of revolutionary struggle by the workers and peasants, going back to the year 2000. This upsurge of the mass movement went as far as posing the question of power on at least two occasions: the Red October of 2003 when the movement overthrew the hated president Goni Sánchez de Lozada; and the May-June 2005 movement which overthrew Carlos Mesa and prevented the oligarchy from imposing Vaca Diez as his replacement. But at the crucial moment the leaders of the movement did not know what to do and the question of power was not resolved in favour of the workers. This allowed for the whole movement to be channelled back into parliamentary politics and to express itself in the massive vote for Evo Morales in December 2005.

Portland woke up on Tuesday to everything covered in white, and promptly went about falling apart. Trimet made the amazing decision early in the morning to not chain up the busses, and by 8:00 nobody could accuse them of overreacting to inclement weather. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Considered," Portland Public School District-along with most of the surrounding districts-announced first that they were going to remain open, and then decided to close. One of the main problems with how the schools went about this decision was actually waiting until many children were already at school, and then basically telling them to go home for the day.

America’s Other War Is Also Mounting Casualties Here at Home
This is what happens to a nation when too many of its people abdicate their sovereign responsibility in not making a government accountable for its catastrophic actions. Now we have an out-of-control rogue leadership in tandem with a group of robber barons that's self-absorbed and self-serving, in the extreme. How low must a people sink before they call a holocaust by its right name?

Accordingly, Black Elk, a famous Wichasha Wakan (Medicine Man or Holy Man) of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux Nation), in 1887, stated he joined the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (circa 1883 - 1916), with the intent of better understanding Americans up close, especially those whites that dominated the wealth in the US. Given his deeply mindful assessment of our culture, his quote still resonates as truth more than 200 years later. Ponder Chief Black Elk's words that captured so well our fixation with materialism and the greed, hypocrisy and widespread inhuman treatment this led to with respect to America's own and others around the globe, then and now.

In a letter to Congress, the governors called the change "a dramatic expansion of federal authority during natural disasters that could cause confusion in the command-and-control of the National Guard and interfere with states' ability to respond to natural disasters within their borders."
