Eric McDavid's Lawyer Files 28 Pre-trial Motions
On Tuesday December 19 Eric McDavid's attorney Mark Reichel filed 28
pretrial motions in federal court. The motions deal with a variety of
legal issues including outrageous government misconduct, suppression of
evidence from illegal searches and wiretaps, the production of discovery
and identification of the FBI confidential source known as "Anna". The
motions are available for viewing in PDF form on "www.supporteric.org".
There will be a hearing on these motions on February 6th (except the
general discovery motion which will be heard separately). Next month
marks the one year anniversary of Eric's incarceration. Eric has not been
convicted of any crime and continues to maintain his innocence. Please
consider writing him a letter. He has been in solitary confinement since
his arrest and letters are one of his few sources of contact with the

Exercise your freedom of assembly by bike, or walking.
I was walking my bike and I was illegally stoped, searched and ticketed by an abusive police officer on Sept. 9th, 2004. He lied in lower court where I lost due to an unfair judge. I won my appeal on Dec. 20th, 2006. It upheld the right to walk or protest on the sidewalk without any restraint from police. For example: Police can no longer use "failure to obey" to issue tickets to pedestrians or protesters who don't "move along".

Bush sets stage for major escalation in Iraq
The remarks delivered by President Bush at a year-end press conference Wednesday, combined with a series of military and political developments, point inexorably to a major escalation of the US war in Iraq in the coming year.

Bush revealed little new in his encounter with the press corps, dismissing as "hypothetical" all questions on the reported turn by his administration to a new military offensive in Iraq based on a "surge" of up to 40,000 more US combat troops in the country.

The president claimed he was still weighing various recommendations from military, diplomatic and Iraqi sources—as well as those of the much-trumpeted but already marginalized Iraq Study Group—before presenting a new policy in a speech that is expected sometime in early January.

American Recreation Council is taking over the National Forest Service
From: "Scott Silver" < ssilver@wildwilderness.org>

To: "Scott Silver" < ssilver@wildwilderness.org>
Subject: The Multiply by Zero Fiddle

It just so happens that the national forest which ends (or perhaps begins) a few miles from my house is frequently at the leading edge of the Forest Service's efforts to radically transform the management and delivery of outdoor recreation. It is a mere coincidence that I live at ground zero, but it is no coincidence that the Deschutes NF is in this unique position.

You see, our former Forest Supervisor, Sally Collins, is Associate Chief of the entire Forest Service. She is a very powerful woman. Unfortunately, Sally can all too frequently be found in the company of the American Recreation Coalition -- the folks who seem to run the recreation program for the USFS these days.

Chavez gets more radical
"For this new era we need a political instrument at the service of the Revolution and socialism"

In an event called on Friday 15, at the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas, to celebrate the election victory and congratulate those who had made it possible, Chavez made a very important speech about the new phase the Bolivarian Revolution has reached. The whole speech was one blow after another against the right wing of the Bolivarian movement, which has spent the last two weeks since the elections calling for conciliation with the opposition, and was enthusiastically received by the thousands of revolutionary activists present at the Theatre and the hundreds of thousands who watch the speech on national TV.

He started by celebrating the election victory and stressing that it was a victory of the Venezuelan people "the first that should be congratulated and the owner of the victory", explaining that his role was one of being "always a tool of the will of the people".

January 11, 2007 -- Citizens to target illegal Detention Centre

The world today is in no doubt as to the criminal status of the illegal detention centre of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The past three years have not only witnessed unprecedented assaults on the founding principles of the USA by the Bush regime, but also on international law and convention. The government of the USA is clearly rogue, a fact in which its officials delight. The contempt the neo-cons display for their own citizens is only exceeded by the extreme disdain they exhibit toward the international community. Each day that Guantanamo Bay remains operational is a day of unspeakable psychological horror, torture and injustice.

POSSIBLE: Out of Iraq in 60 Days
All things are possible. Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich detailed the platform on which he plans to once again seek the Democratic nomination for President, in an interview conducted last week with Congressional Quarterly.

He told CQ that "People aren't looking for the Democrats to be better managers of the war, they want the Democrats to end the war and to bring our troops home." To further this point, the Ohio Congressman emphasized that his plan for withdrawing from Iraq in sixty days was feasible. He explained that "if you go back to Oct. 1 when the appropriation of $70 billion began, the money's in the pipeline right now to bring the troops home."

Chavez calls for United Socialist Party of Venezuela
Was it my imagination or were there lots of sad faces at last night's meeting at the Teresa Carrena theatre -- the site of so many Bolivarian rallies and celebrations? Certainly, here was another occasion for celebration. It was a meeting to recognize the electoral triumph of Hugo Chavez on 3 December and, in particular, to acknowledge the contribution of campaign workers organized in the Comando Miranda.

And, acknowledge they did: certificates were given to the state organizations which produced the greatest votes for Chavez's re-election: Amacuro Delta (77.98%), Amazon (77.81%), Portuguesa (77.05%), Sucre (73.70%), and Cojedes (73.33%) -- as well as to exemplary municipal battalions such as Rio Negro (96.4%). Definitely a time to celebrate.

Little has been said about the wisdom of their decision to attempt to scale one of the tallest mountains in the Cascade Range during the worst time of the year for such an adventure. I realize that the families of the victims are holding out hope that their loved ones will be found to have survived the hellish conditions they encountered this week; I do not wish to add to their suffering by publishing this article. It is in the interest of preventing the loss of lives in the future that I present this piece, as my research into this tragedy has turned up some very interesting information regarding the quality of information available to the public regarding weather conditions in the region, and the facilities available to those who attempt to scale these very dangerous peaks.
