New Law Signed By George Bush Allows Easier Martial Law
(From Toward Freedom.com) n a stealth maneuver, President Bush has signed into law a provision which, according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law (1). It does so by revising the Insurrection Act, a set of laws that limits the President's ability to deploy troops within the United States. The Insurrection Act (10 U.S.C.331 -335) has historically, along with the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C.1385), helped to enforce strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. With one cloaked swipe of his pen, Bush is seeking to undo those prohibitions.

should women be marginalized?
I just added a comment to the recent article called "useful legal tools--we need to use them," and my comment was relegated to the discussion column. I suggested that women be at the front and center of the most visible edge of the revolution we have all been talking about. It was a strategic idea, because women would meet less resistance from the police or whoever. This comment was relegated to the discussion page, which marginalizes the thought of women being responsible for executing the revolution.

scandalous news about John & Karen Minnis?...no, couldn't be!
Since there is so much news of late on predatory policing that uses killing in lieu of effective
"behavior management" in the Portland area, and the so-called "authorities" seek to attribute
it in great part to "inadequate training" and "budgetary limitations" that have left the social
network in tatters, it is most newsworthy when two major figures in Oregon's political scene
that are directly involved with "police training" and "state budget limitations" (that rolled-back
the social services funding in draconian manner) are themselves the subject of SCANDALOUS
NEWS REPORTING. Such news deserves to be widely reported and read...don't you agree?

Haiti - Film, Food, Discussion
jean dominique The Agronomist
Dir.Jonathan Demme US 2003
From director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Stop Making Sense) comes this riveting documentary that tells the story of Jean Dominique, Haitian radio journalist and human rights activist. From the 1960's until his assassination in 2000, Dominique ran a hugely popular independent station, Radio Haiti Inter, which was the first to broadcast in Creole, the language of the poor majority. Over decades of political turmoil, Radio inter was subject to serious violence and harassment and Dominique and his politically active wife spent much of the 80's and early 90's in exile in the U.S. Demme addresses U.S. intervention in Haiti, and also traces the rise and fall of Jean Bertrand (SP) Aristide. Through it all, we see Dominique, an intensely charismatic and inspiring character, fearlessly and tirelessly championing the rights of Haiti's farmers and laborers, while promoting democracy and its core value; free speech. (subtitled:90m)
