Dogs have been poisoned by spiked dog treats at laurelhurst. 4 have died and 12 have gotten sick so far. The hospital believes someone is using the herbicide Paraquat to poison the dogs, perhaps by spraying it on dog treats. Paraquat is an industrial herbicide that is illegal in city parks and requires a federal permit to obtain.
The common factor amoung these dogs is that they have all been to laurelhurst park within the last week. According to a city parks worker only very low grade toxic herbacides are used. There's speculation among some owners that the recent controversy over unofficial off-leash areas - instigated this apparent attack. The animal hospital has sent several samples to labs for testing - and necropsies are being performed on two of the dogs. So far there are only reports of dogs getting sick at Laurelhurst.
Dog owners should watch their pets for the following symptoms.
# Vomiting and or diarrhea.
# A loss of energy or loss of appetite.
If you're not paranoid you're not paying attention. I stepped out during the film(Shots On The Docks) for a smoke. Before I went inside I noticed a man, who had been walking around the parking lot, looking at the front of a vehicle in the parking lot. At the time I didn't think much of it, thinking maybe it was his car. The man(wearing an ILWU shirt) never came inside. After the video showing I caught a ride with someone. It was but a few minutes later that we were pulled over...
The cop started searching through the car and through the drivers bag. Even after I told the driver to clearly state that he did not consent to a search of his property and he stated this, the cop continued the search. Having already called the tow truck without telling us, the cop told him that he had a "choice". Either leave the car and find a way home or he was going to tow the car and give him a ticket. The driver pleaded with the cop that there must be some sort of mistake("mistake" indeed, maybe a PJTTF "computer glitch"!). Then the tow truck arrived and the cop told him that he was towing him because he argued with him when he was so generous as to offer him a "choice". So then we were stranded and had to walk to the nearest MAX stop and find our way from there.
Green house youth drop in center closed it's doors earlier this month leaving at least 100+ homeless youth to find different ways to survive without food or showers, something must be done about the homeless problem that Mayor Katz wants to sweep under the rug.
Greenhouse closed and that means that 100+ kids are left without a place to go for food.. Please rally together and help me to do something about this, I am one of those kids. I have left it behind for Job Corps, but am concerned for friends that are still there!
On Bastille Day the French show their support for rebellion and Jose Bove. The modern prison where political prisoner Jose Bove is incarcerated is built in the scrubby garrigue, a rocky shrub covered landscape that covers a lot of the land between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes Mountains in the South of France. Bove, the leader of the Cofederation Paysanne, a french small farmers union, is imprisoned for political reasons, though the official reason is that Bove destroyed Genitically Modified crops government scientists were growing in a govt. lab.
Bove is a political prisoner because his sentence is extraordinary in a country where farmers and truckers and winemakers regularly break the law to express their outrage at government policies. Bove is dangerous because he is a skilled political activist who knows how to use the media, and how to form coalitions with groups outside of France who are opposed to capitalistic methods of farming. Bove wrote a book titled 'The World is not a Commodity'. Bove is also vocally pro-Palestinian, in a country where you can be arrested for disrespecting the Israeli flag.
So we gathered in the hot garrigue near the prison, within sight of the mediterranean in one direction and the city of Montpellier in the other. There were people from the League Communiste Revolutionaire, whose presidential candidate, a 27 year old postman, won over 4 percent of the votes in the last election. Also people from the anti corporate globalization group Attac. Also the Green Party was represented, as was the anarchist CNT, and the radical labor union Sud. [ Read More ]
James DePriest, long-time conductor for the Oregon Symphony spoke at the PSU commencement exercises in June. He blew the audience away... this man is not afraid to speak the truth. "Myth masquerading as truth, our beloved United States in crisis, many of its fundamental principles under assault. And yet, a goodly number of your fellow Americans seem oblivious...sleepwalking through these alarming times, heedless and gullible beyond belief. Our country simply cannot afford this and our hard won freedoms cannot long bear the weight of an unenlightened citizenry."
Sawyers Bar, Ca. - During the past weeks, a group calling themselves the Healthy Forest Militia implemented small diameter fuels reduction in a Knob Timber Sale unit in the Klamath National Forest. This comes at a time when the controversial Healthy Forest Initiative sits on the senate floor. Opponents of the initiative warn that what George Bush and the United States Forest Service justify as fire protection and fuel reduction through its "Healthy Forest" Initiative actually increases the risk of high intensity forest fires that threaten homes and communities.

Well, I just got back into Portland today from a couple weeks off from the encampment, that I've been at since March 21 and got a welcome home from the portland police. Officer Westbrook and Lt. Humsperger arrested me tonight and took everything from the vigil, seems as thought the police are still up to no good. I was released shortly after being arrested, which is a complete suprise considering that if you get arrested on a Friday at 6:00 pm they usually hold you for the weekend. I did have a chance to do some good yoga and meditation while in the holding cell and now I'm back at the encampment. Officer Westbrook did tell me that all the property that was taken is not going to be release, because it was abandonded and would not give a reciept. If anybody would like to make a donation or help out in any way stop by or give me a call at the camp at 971-570-7018, anything would help because the took it all food, signs, blankets, flowers, clothes, etc... It's great to be back in Portland, much peace and love to all.

At least on person arrested, materials confiscated at the Peace Camp. Reich Marshall Kreoker has struck again. Kroeker's ridiculous band of idiots, torturers, murderers, and willful enemies of the US and Oregon Constitutions, have crossed the line which separated them from being dangerous morons and traitors to the US and now may qualify them as being full blown terrorists under current US law.
I just passed by the Peace Camp and saw several squad cars on the scene. All of the materials at the camp appeared to have been confiscated. In a brief conversation with a person on the scene, I learned that at least one person has been arrested; a man by the name of Todd. The person that I spoke with said that the police had failed to convey the charges.
On July 22, 2003, a boycott against Coca Cola will begin. SINALTRAINAL, the Colombian Food and Drinks Workers Union, has better reason reason than most to want such a boycott. Eight of its members have been assassinated by paramilitaries financed by Coca Cola bottling companies. Hundreds of their workers have been sacked and detained, even kidnapped, tortured, and disappeared, as part of the dirty war in Colombia that kills members of the social opposition so that multinational corporations can make profits.
Elections officials have received a second complaint against the right-wing Better Portland Alliance and recallvera.com alleging that the committee filed a fraudulent finance report with its recall petition.
This complaint comes only two weeks after the Elections Division acted on an earlier complaint and discontinued the first group's status as a political committee because it was not properly formed under state election law, which means that contributors to the BPA will not be able to claim the state political-contribution tax credit.
Unit 2 of the Straw Devil Timber Sale has been reduced to 6 acres thanks to tireless efforts by activists. After months of working to defend unit 2 (among others) of the Straw Devil Timber Sale and the red tree voles that reside there, the Forest Service finally acted to remove 24 acres from the sale. Unit 2 was originally 30 acres and is now 6 acres due to buffers provided for 14 red tree vole nests located by activists last summer. In spring of this year, Cascadia Forest Defenders erected two tree-sits in the unit in order to protect the vole nests and to defend the sacred forests of their deceased comrade known as Sparrow. (see www.forestdefenders.org for more info about Sparrow)
The remaining forests of unit 2 include ancient incense cedars, madrones and pacific yews. Straw Devil is comprised of mostly ancient trees 400+ years old (separated into 6 different timber sale units) in an area surrounded by clearcuts. Protecting what remains in this watershed is critical to the entire ecosystem and all life that depends on it for survivial. Recently another tree-sit was erected at the sale in unit 6 by an all-womyn's group. Activists associated with Cascadia Forest Defenders will be actively working to defend this sale throughout the logging season and continuing until the entire sale is cancelled!! On Thursday, a few of us Vancouver activists appeared during evening rush on Evergreen Bl overpass, showing Peace & Justice banner & flags to I-5 traffic, continuing a now-six-month weekly effort. On Friday, members of Vancouver for Peace & the local ACLU chapter wandered the Fort for seven hours before the fireworks, handing out copies of the Bill of Rights & offering petitions at a table, for City & County to not cooperate with "Patriot" Act. Later, a few of us went to Portland to join the P-Square march. On Saturday, both Vancouver for Peace & Green Party Clark County set up tables at Vancouver Farmers' Market. Again, we had petitions for signing, & we distributed info about progressive topics, & had raffle tickets in support of NW RAGE action expenses in Sac'to, where several of us had also joined the protests. When our congressman, Brian Baird, appeared for an informal "town hall", we met him with signs & notes urging congressional investigation of White House manipulation of facts prior to the Iraq invasion. I'm posting, to let all know that we're doing our best in the 'Couve, doing our best to contribute to what people are doing everywhere, standing up for Justice, Peace, & Earth. Onward. Barlow District - Ponderosa Pete spent most of his day in Hipo Unit 7 reminiscing his puppy years when he rounded-up cattle in the forests of Eastern Oregon. Unit 7, an old fenced-off cattle-grazing area, contains ancient douglas firs 3 to about 4 feet in diameter. Unlike Hipo Unit 4 where the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) selected only western hemlocks to be cut; in Hipo Unit 7, USFS left all the western hemlocks marked as leave trees. This leaves only these massive douglas firs to be cut.
Noises of vehicles drive by on U.S. 26 as Ponderosa Pete measures the buffer distance from the highway to the timber sale boundary. "I got a distance that ranges 50 to 100 human feet from the boundary to the highway," says Pete. "With a slope facing the highway and a 150-foot douglas firs that will potentially be cut, I am concerned about driver's safety on U.S. 26." Another oddity of Unit 7 is that the leaves trees are marked half the circumference in blue. Leaves trees are usually marked in orange. Ponderosa Pete has an assumption USFS used this color to make the unit not look like a timber sale for motorist driving by it on U.S. 26. [ Read More ] [ Virtual Hike the Hipo Timber Sale ]
video documentary of flag washing ritual held in front of federal building in Portland at noon July 4th. Gabriel and Thomas Chavez of Christ the Healer Peace Church held a flag washing ceremony today, July 4th, in front of the Edith Wyatt federal building in downtown Portland. The purpose was to cleanse and purify the symbol of our liberty which has been sullied by years of corruption and war. This seven minute video is a documentation of that event. [ Video ]
Thinking about going down to the River to watch the fireworks tonight? Think again. Turns out those beautiful showers of colorful sparks can be carrying any of the following chemicals: potassium nitrate, barium chlorate, arsenic, strontium nitrate, potassium perchlorate, copper oxide, sodium bicarbonate, carbon, sulphur, perchlorate, aluminium powder...
Thinking about buying a load of aerials, spinners, fountains, roman candles, and lady fingers and setting them off in your driveway? Think again. The number one manufacturer of firecrackers in the world is China; incendiary devices are produced in dangerous sweatshops there, often by children...
A local real estate broker decided to litter EVERY SINGLE HOME in my neighborhood with a flag that represents a murdering, racist, sexist, gay-bashing government. Cheap little plastic USA flags adorned with the broker's business card proclaimed her allegience to the fascist white patriarchy, and were placed in people's property without permission, like spam or junk mail. The Kendra James Community Forum was held last night at the Mt.Olivet Baptist Church Family Center in north Portland last night. When I arrived, police chief Kroeker was already speaking to a crowd from the stage in the front of the auditorium. He invited citizen participation in the form of police ride-alongs and volunteer opportunities.
Reverend Tate of the Albina Ministerial Alliance (AMA) then introduced city District Attorney Mike Shrunk. Mr. Shrunk emphasized the point that the Grand Jury looked at the narrow issue of criminality in the case of the Kendra James shooting. . He said that all available information had been turned over to the public. He said that this is our system, and felt that he had acted in the best interest of the public.
Bicycles are traffic. Cyclists are entitled to the same respect and rights on the roadway as automobiles. Cyclists must organize as a minority community with clarity in their vision to achieve parity of protection with automobiles, safe roads, and equity on the roadway. We cannot afford to forget this tradegy without achieving community recognition because it places every rider at greater risk and the ultimate cost is further injury to our cycling community.
Repost from LA IndyMedia: In Los Angeles, the women of CODEPINK hung a 30 foot satin 'pink slip' reading "Bush/You Lied/Your Fired" off the Century Plaza Hotel while Bush collect his booty in the ballroom below. Outside thousands of protesters cheered and demonstrated against the continuing conflicts and loss of life in Iraq. Dressed in pink the women wore sashes reading "Bush Lied", "Education, Not Occupation" and "Where are the weapons of mass destruction?"
Logging could begin in the Warm Springs and Upper North project areas this summer, including 311 acres of "regeneration" clearcut logging of high elevation, native, and old growth forests which is lynx and wolverine habitat. Roseburg Lumber has already been awarded the two most destructive sales. The huge WARM SPRINGS and UPPER NORTH timber sale projects are once again on the chopping block-- in the first week of June we lost our 3 year long lawsuit challenging these projects.
