We are pleased to announce that, as we write this email, Lindsay Parme is on a plane back to California. Lindsay was essentially kidnapped by the FBI from her home in Santa Cruz on June 12th for failing to appear before a grand jury to which she was subpoenaed in January. (Read Lindsay's statement on the reasons for her refusal here: http://www.shacamerica.net/lindsay/update.htm#25)
Every morning we wake up, the day is ours to create. Today we begin to create through action a world where womyn and all who were socialized as womyn no longer bear the weight of a history of rape on our minds, bodies, earth and livelihood; a history of unheard cries, a history of terror, a history of corsets and clearcuts, manufactured food and breasts, white picket fences and white corporate lies.
Today we announce the beginning of an all-womyn's action, occupation and tree-sit in defense of public land sold off to private industry. All-womyn occupied structures have been built to protect Unit 6 of the Straw Devil timber sale where Starfire Lumber (Engel Investors, Inc.) and Basco Logging in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service will attempt to demolish this endangered ecosystem beginning in mid-July.
The Recall Vera Katz Committee continues its signature-gathering campaign (1) to oppose police violence and to promote the idea that the way to reform the police department is by changing the paramilitaristic structure of Katz's police bureau to one based on a civilian model, and (2) to oppose a competing right-wing recall effort that says the police aren't aggressive enough.
Anarchist and political prisoner Jeff 'Free' Luers has been sent to the hole for 120 days due to a letter he sent to the Earth First! Journal.
Bound and Gagged
On June 13, 2003 my cell was rushed by four guards. I was immediately placed in handcuffs and taken to the hole. My offense: I had written a letter to the Earth First! Journal. This 'offense' had been under investigation for 3 weeks as part of a greater confidential investigation of me, I am unsure if this is a ODOC [ed-Oregon Department of Corrections] investigation or a criminal investigation. However, based on the following, I believe it is an investigation into my 'alleged' role in the Earth Liberation Front.
In the autumn of 2002, the U.S. Forest Service sold a 290-acre timber sale of ancient hemlocks to Dodge Lumber. Hipo, located in the White River Watershed of the Barlow District, is part of the Hilynx project and home to some wolverines.
http://biotechimc.org/images/2003/06/1056.jpg Hello supporters and miscreants, much thanks to everyone who has helped out at and since the action at UC Davis on Tuesday. I was one of them hangin' out in Davis ( http://biotechimc.org/or/2003/06/1055.shtml), the one on the left with glasses. This is my first chance to debrief, so I guess I'll sum it up by saying that we've had a lot of good support from people, a lot of people haven't even heard about the Davis action which is sad, but at least it made the front page of the Davis Enterprise. Not sure what other media it made, cept for some TV the next day. Anyhow, we all know that that is not particularly the point, the corporate media coverage. We're all dealing with bullshit felony charges, and four misdemeanors, but we don't expect any of it to stick. [ Read more ]
If you witnessed any of Friday's Critical Mass arrests or can offer legal support, please help.
I didn't get a chance to thank those of you who watched me being arrested yesterday near 39th and Belmont. Thank you for offering to watch my bike and thank you for keeping me safe. I really wished that this last ride wasn't going to be about police confrontation and arrests. I really feel that something very important is happening in our city, and despite the current grief and anger, we're going to continue to grow and progress.
I was the one holding up the sign that said "Cars kill more Americans each year than the Vietnam War" on one side and "Cars are the #1 killer of on-duty cops" on the other side. According to my citations, I am being charged with ORS 162.247, the crime of "Interfering with a Police Officer" and ORS 814.070, the violation for "Pedestrian Improper Position on Highway."
If you can lend me any support, pro-bono legal contacts or offer to be a witness at my trial, please contact me. If you have to work, perhaps we can arrainge to prepare an affidavit of your testimony.
It is important that we feel this tragedy as a community. It is important that we share the sense of loss. It is important that we not forget all the lives affected. This is my message but my hope is that from this communal sharing of our loss and through dialogue we will strengthen and build our community so that we can speak together and gain the social recognition and merit the same social standards for protection as drivers of automobiles read more >>
Today was my first ride with Critical Mass, and what an important ride to be on with the tragedy from this past week and as a fellow cyclist. The ride itself minus the ignorant, uptight, over bearing cops, was awesome, to be riding up Hawthorne and seeing the mass of bicycles riding up hill, then on Belmont from 30th Avenue to 39th we took the entire 9 blocks! YEA bikes.
I was holding sign, that was created by a fellow shifter, stating, "CYCLIST, KILLED HERE, by CAR!" and I felt a sense of community, a sense of grief and a sense of a bunch of GREAT love for the people surrounding me. We held a minute of silence, as I got tears in my eyes... read more >>
critical mass ride by with heavy police presence in air and on land...There's a copter been circling over my house for the last 20 minutes or so. Sitting outside I thought it was odd, figured something was going on to warrant it. After a while, I noticed underneath the copter while sitting outside about 10 people on bikes, maybe 15, ride by with a cop on a motorbike. Then trailing behind was at least 8 cops on bikes. I figured it was critical mass.
This is what our city government has become, it's obviously some twisted game. The beatings, the shootings, chaining protesters to parking meters and macing them in the face. This is completely insane. The sow of a mayor sends her piglets out in mass only to annoy, disrupt, kill and otherwise harm. All while they can't keep drunks from killing people on the streets. read more>>
As many of you know, RedRed has been charged with a felony for elledgedly breaking a window during the USDA/WTO meeting protests in Sacramento. At court Friday morning she motioned for delay to gather evidence. Her next date is July 2nd. Strangely this window was not broken until Tuesday, 2 days after her arrest for the crime(hmm). Sounds to me like someone in Homeland Security is attempting to save their job and use any means neccessary to justify the amount of money spent on surveilance. Infiltraitors, line taps, marked feds, and cops were everywhere. 7 million was spent just on training. I can just imagine the equipment costs....

During the Sacramento Ministerial protests on June 24, 2003, three comrades locked down inside the Life Sciences Building on the University of California-Davis campus where research on genetically engineered trees takes place. They have been taken into custody and are being charged with Felony Conspiracy, Failure to Disperse, Resisting Arrest, and Disturbing the Peace. All 3 have refused to give their names and are being held on $10,000 bail each at the Yolo County Jail. They are desperately in need of financial assistance and moral support.

U.S. protester from Vermont falsely arrested and beaten in Thessaloniki during E.U. Summit protests. Released on bail, then re-arrested for deporation. On Saturday, June 22, during the protests surrounding the E.U. summit in Thessaloniki, Greece, Jonathan 'Slug' Crowell was arrested while peacefully walking with friends to a Greek Social Forum concert.
Upon arrival at the station, those arreested were forced to walk past a long line of police baying for blood. They formed a gauntlet with police on either side of the arrested. The arrestees were forced to walk through this gauntlet and were kicked and beaten with police batons.
. . . after the march turned south on 10th it wound up on the west lawn of Capitol Park where it had begun, the marchers began sitting in the shade under the trees. it was pretty hot. The crowd seethed with resentment at the overwhelming police state show of force along the parade route. It was clear to me that nothing was over. suddenly i saw a few black bloc anarchists bolt from the capital steps and sprint south towards N Street. this sudden action instantly stampeded the resentful crowd, and in seconds 100's of demonstrators were sprinting across the lawn for the N street side of the park. i dropped my bike and ran for it.
Members of Crossroads, a homeless people's organization located in downtown Portland, distributed dozens of sleeping bags to people experiencing homelessness in front of City Hall on Wednesday morning as part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness about the needs of Portland's homeless and the city's anti-camping ordinance. About 100 persons attended the event for the chance to pick up a needed sleeping bag.
After this was "agenda item" was over, city council went on to other business.... On the "consent agenda" a pay raise for the mayor and city council was voted in. The mayor currently makes over $100,000 a year, and the city council members each make around $85,000. This means that the raise for vera will be over $2000 a year, and around $1600 for council people.
Street Car Expansion, costing at least 74 million was also passed.
Despite the fact that both the WTO Conference and its attendant protests are winding down and folks are all going home, police helicopters continue to fly over the Mobilization Welcome Center every few minutes. In response, a group of young people arranged themselves into this "Circle A" shape in the parking lot to send a farewell message to the police. We'd like to think we cracked a smile up in that agitating machine. See ya later, Sacto PD!
Many of you may know Red Red, she is a portland activist that is currently incarcerated in Sacto on felony charges related to the WTO protest!
This is a statement by Red Red, 6/24/03 (as transcribed by the Sac Legal Collective) "I want to say thank you so very much to the people who came out today in solidarity during my court appearance. When my lawyer Doug told me about people chanting, "Free Red Red," my heart swelled and you all should know that you shut down Sacramento county jail for two hours. We were locked down and no ones court case was able to be heard. I was in a cell with five women who might get their freedom because time ran out on their arraignment. They send their love.
My charges were also dropped. Unfortunately, the Sacramento police are determined to nail me and I was re-arrested before I even left my cell. The courts have nothing but the pigs want blood. But with the support of my comrades and lawyers they will only get a headache."

Lockdown at UC Davis Life sciences building to bring attention to GE tree programs. Activists have been charged with felonies and are refusing to give their names.
At about 2:30pm on Tuesday (6/24) forest activists stormed the Life Sciences building at UC Davis where research is conducted on GE trees. Their goal? To bring attention to the Genetically Engineered tree programs taking place at the campus. The five demands are:
1. End to research on GE trees at UC Davis.
2. Full disclosure and acknowledgment of hazards of GE trees.
3. End of Corporate funded Bio-research at University of California
4. Cancel plans to build new Bio-Weapons lab at UC Davis.
5. Full public discussion and full public envolvement in all discussions about potentially hazardous research.
The lockdown occurred in the 4-story stairwell where a sculpture of DNA hangs through the middle if the stairwell. Two activists repelled with climbing equipment from the top of the stairwell and hung next to the sculpture, then u-locked themselves to each other and attached themselves to the sculpture. Another activist u-locked to the railing next to them.
Fewer people were protesting in Sacramento on June 24 than on the previous three days, and the police were more demanding, but energy was still high, and solidarity was stronger. The first action of the day was a creative, if somewhat quixotic, convergence on the Convention Center, where WTO delegates were meeting. Protesters danced, sang, decorated the sidewalks, and briefly took the streets. Police struck brutally, splitting the crowd and squeezing it between horses and motorcycles. Eventually, people moved on to the jail to show solidarity for an imprisoned comrade. At least two were arrested en route. Food Not Bombs served at this lively rally, where the protester-to-police ration was 1-to-1+. Afterwards, the crowd was escorted back to the Welcome Center along a police-chosen route from which no one was allowed to stray. Elsewhere, black bloc kids were harrassed but still had fun. Police also seized plastic noisemakers and indymedia flyers from a ten-year old boy (with an IMC press pass) and refused to give them back.
This article will be updated to contain an archive of breaking news from sacramento posted to http://www.biotechimc.org for events beginning on tuesday, june 24th (day 4 of actions). Previous archives of breaking news can be found here: day 3 (monday), day 2 (sunday).
Day 3 of the WTO Mobilization in Sacramento was a day filled with beauty and fear, marked by high energy, resistance, and police brutality and intimidation. Activists released from jail that morning from direct action the night before told their stories [ 1 | 2 ] and a call went out for solidarity with those still jailed [ 1 | 2 ]. Cops were everywhere.
Monday, June 23, 2003 - Sacramento, CA - At about 11:30pm we received a call saying there was a group of kids being harassed and detained by cops at 10th St and J. Four of us drove over and witnessed the activity with still and video cameras. There were six cops. Officer Justus was in charge.
