HUNGARY: national television under siege - clashes on the streets
Thousands of angry demonstrators occupied the state television headquarters on Liberty Square in the heart of Budapest, Hungary. They also attacked the parliament. Some police cars were burned. more than 100 police men were injured. The people had been gathering at Kossuth square (in front of the parliament, pretty near to Liberty square) since Sunday evening, with the strong will to send away the government. Before that on the same day a record was leaked with a speech from Gyurcsány Ferenc, the prime minister. He hold a secret speach to members of his party and the government, declaring that the politicians in hungary, including him, have betrayed the hungarian people for years and lied about the true state of the county. He announced that massive social cuts were necessary. The tape was recorded during a closed meeting of the ruling parties fraction in may, after they have won the elections.

Corporate overcharges
At a lecture by Michael Shuman (Author of The Small-Mart Revolution) last week at First Unitarian Church, he analyzed how much one "saved" shopping at WalMart. One of the "hidden" expenses are overcharges at the cash register which he claimed amounted to 7% for WalMart. Please note they aren't the only corporation overcharging unknowing customers.

Yesterday I bought a headset and microphone for my computer at Office Depot. I bought two other computer related items as well so I was sure I would have everything I need when I got home. The price of the headset was $41.99 on the shelf. Thankfully I was paying attention because it rang up at $49.99. Had I not been paying attention, I probably wouldn't have noticed since it was just one or three items and I hadn't added them up in my head to know what total to expect.

IMPEACH BUSH cleared at the voting polls
I went to vote today. I had a cloth sign taped to my shoulder bag that simply read:

IMPEACH BUSH

I went to the check-in table and was about to sign my name to receive my ballot when one of the poll workers noticed the sign on my bag. I wasn't allowed to sign and was told no political messages were allowed.

I didn't get irate, but I did state that I had 1st amendment rights and would they please show me an RCW (Washington State law) or a Federal law that prevented me from displaying such a sign.

Houses demolished in Korean resistance to US base expansion
For over four years, the Korean villages of Daechuri and Doduri have defiantly resisted the seizure of their homes and fields for the expansion of an United States Army base. On September 13 at dawn, 22,000 riot police invaded and occupied the villages. Police demolition equipment managed to wipe out 68 empty houses. But the vastly outnumbered villagers and supporters put up a fierce resistance, and managed to stop the cops from destroying many of the houses that the Ministry of Defense had threatened to destroy.

Fifty years ago these communities lost their land as 2 foreign forces (first Japanese, then American) built and expanded the base. Now the US military wants to push them off their land again. The US base expansion is part of an aggressive transformation of US global military strategy. The main mission of the US Forces in Korea will be not just to defend against North Korea, but to contain China and act as a rapid deployment force for the entire Asian-Pacific region.

AUDIO FILE: Proposed Copper Mine at Mt. St. Helens
An example of the acid run off from the mining process These are audio files from an event sponsored by Gifford Pinchot Task Force which took place at the Hollywood Theatre on August 29, 2006, concerning the application for a 3000 acre lease to mine copper just north of the Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Monument.

In March of 2005, Idaho General Mines, Inc. of Spokane, WA applied for a lease from the federal government to land just north of Mount St. Helens. The mining company has stated in press reports that they hope to construct a 3,000 acre copper mine at the site. The federal government is expected to release a draft Environmental Assessment in consideration of the lease application in the coming weeks.

Deputy Grope 'em Green not off hook-yet
Despite Bernie Giusto's efforts to hide Deputy Green in some bureau until his groping activities were forgotten, thanks to his victims, and of course some public outcry, it seems that DA Schrunk has reoppened the case.

Never mind the fact that long before the shit hit the fan, and the victim's outcry over the fact that Green was back on patrol, deputy district attorneys had served Sheriff Bernie the good ol boy Giusto with notice that they would no longer be calling Green as a witness in any case that they were called upon to prosecute. Shrunk finally felt the need to proceed, "when several more witnesses/victims came forward."

Clackamas County deputy gets 13 years
Yet Another Miscarriage of Justice: Clackamas County deputy gets off easy with 13 years

Once again, the stenographers in the MSM have shown how the scales of justice are gamed by the heavy thumb of the state.

The mentality and philosophy of modern law enforcement was plain to see once again in the recently quoted comments of Clackamas County deputy David Verbos, his wife, friends, superiors, and colleagues. And, as usual, the MSM dutifully records their callously arrogant and ethically corrupt views without question.

Kevin Zeese: “It’s Time to Try Diplomacy in Middle East!”
Kevin Zeeese at the Palestine Center Since the end of WWII, the U.S. policy in the Middle East has created only "more anger-more hatred for our county," said Kevin Zeese. Speaking on 09/13/06, at the Palestine Center, in D.C., Zeese ripped the Bush-Cheney Gang for giving Israel the "green light" to terrorize Lebanon for 33-days. Zeese also took it to task for abandoning the Palestinians and for its hostile attitude towards Iran. "It's time to try diplomacy in the Middle East," he said.

AUDIO FILE: Portland Call To Impeach Bush
This is a twelve minute interview with Styve, who has been diligently on the streets of Portland for many months now with signs encouraging the Impeachment of George W. Bush.

I videotaped these interviews on the corner of SE Madison and Grand, where Steve and Kathy were standing with their signs encouraging motorists to stand up for impeachment. Styve, who has "been protesting Bush since before he was elected," gives a brief synopsis of the process which led him to his present stand, and both Styve and Kathy give their reasons why Bush deserves to be impeached. Among them, lying us into war and warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, in any sane society, should give the population and their legislators cause to indict.

"What I started doing this for was to raise some awareness, to try to motivate people to say, DAMN!, if this guy cares this much, that he's doing this to and from work, why aren't I doing this?"

Protests Increase in August
You are probably all aware that Code Pink had a hugely successful "Bring the Troops Home Fast" campaign in DC where many people fasted to bring the troops home "FAST". They were noticed by the Iraqi government officials visiting Washington, DC and even invited to Iraq to propose ideas on how to do just that!

August 6th of course, saw a plethora of demonstrations around the world as it is the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing: Lockhead Martin, Bechtel, Raytheon, Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab, "events taking place in over 70 cities in 27 states, culminating on August 9th, the anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing, under the banner, "From Hiroshima to Yucca Mountain to the Middle East: No Nukes! No Wars! End War Profiteering! Support Indigenous Rights!" A major focus of the demonstrations was Bechtel Corporation, one of the largest beneficiaries of both the Iraq war and all things nuclear."

Local VfP Member Urges Portland City Council to Pass Impeachment Resolution
Vietnam veteran Mike Hastie, former vice president of Portland's Veterans for Peace organization and VfP activist, urged the Portland City Council to pass an impeachment resolution at the public portion of Wednesday morning's council meeting. The national VfP organization has twice (2003, 2005) voted to impeach Bush and Cheney, et al., , most recently for violations of the military portions of the Sixth Amendment.
[...]
Hastie's testimony cited the consequences of the Iraq war from parallels to the Vietnam war. The VfP's national position is that the Iraq war is illegal. In the allotted three minutes, he used experiences as a medic in Vietnam and statements by Iraq returnees to support his statements about the negative impact on the military in both conflicts in terms of tactical, physical, and mental results.

Three SHAC7 Defendants Sentenced More to Follow
Ok. So, it's bad, but not as bad as it could be. Today, 3 of the defendants were sentenced. Jake got 48 months. Lauren got 52 months. Kevin got 72 months. That's a long time to spend in jail for speaking, but at least it wasn't as much time as our piece of crap government was trying to get out of them. Josh should be sentenced tomorrow, with Andy and Darius to follow sometime next week. Everybody keep your fingers crossed.

Josh Harper Gets 36 Months Josh Harper has not been charged with any crimes in connection with any direct action. Every one of the charges against Josh and the rest of the SHAC 7 defendants had to do with things they said, or things they wrote. This is wrong. This is a battle that all of us must rise to fight. We must not allow this verdict to frighten us into submission, as it was intended to do. We must continue to speak out against the kinds of injustices that Josh has been fighting for many years. And we must close ranks around him now that he needs us. In the name of solidarity and mutual aid, we must keep him company through this with letters, and we must make the committment to find out what he needs and how we can help. Some day, it may be us in there.

dissident comments: "This is designed to put a chill into us. Because these people never committed a crime, and we all know this. All they did was speak. None of the charges had to do with any crime. They all had to do with speaking. This is supposed to scare us all into silence. It will NOT. SPEAK.

I will not be silent. We will keep struggling for what is right in the world, for what we believe in, and we will NOT cower in corners. May they be broken out of jail even as the unjust walls come tumbling down and the oppressor shatters."

Daniel McGowan is off house arrest
Great news! Today (9/11/06) Daniel's lawyers received word that Judge Aiken signed off on the motion which allowed Daniel's electronic monitoring device to be removed. Other restrictions still apply, but he is allowed to be out of the apartment and enjoy the crisp autumn weather coming our way.
Support Daniel by organizing your community!
So far Daniels supporters (and that includes you!) have done an excellent job of organizing ourselves to support him in these difficult times. We have been drawing on Daniel's connections to the community to build support for his freedom. It is also important that we map out our relationships (political, social, cultural, etc.) so that we can expand the scope of our work. We plan to reach a broader population of potential supporters who do not share an immediate or obvious connection with Daniel McGowan himself by utilizing all of the connections to broader communities that exist within our networks.

Gresham officer involved in deadly crash resigns
The Gresham police officer who ran a red light and hit a mini van has resigned. Officer Joshua Linstrom, who ran a red light, hitting a mini van and killing Marino Sanchez-Sanches, has resigned. A 'Grand Jury" cleared Linstrom after an investigation, but on September 11th, the officer decided to leave the force. I did not hear his reason.

A Parently contributes: It appears that someone in the Gresham Police department command has a firmer grasp on what is right or wrong than the DA or the "grand" freakin jury. He was given the ultimatum-resign or be fired. More sense than Sandy or Clackamas County, at least.

Gresham/ Troutdale 9/11 Protest
I just wanted to report that me and two other people did what we could on 9/11/06. We live out in the Gresham/Troutdale area, so the three of us walked up and down 257th near Start St with signs. Every protest that I have ever been to has been downtown so I was not sure what kind of reaction we would get out here in suburbia. We had our share of people yelling at us and middle fingers being thrown our way but overall we got way more honks and cheers. For the most part though, most people tried to act like they didn't notice us.

"One Man Parade" - BushCo Must Go!!
About 5 months ago, I decided that I'd had enough of the charade I felt we all were living abiding the corruption of the Bush Administration!! I had grown tired of feeling voiceless in the face of the GOP scandals surfacing weekly, the threat of nuclear war with Iran looming, the undermining of the integrity of our elections, our government's moral bankruptcy on the various human rights issues facing the world, and the utter dismantling of the civil rights guaranteed to Americans through the Constitution. I felt the need to try to stimulate more political consciousness, and more ACTION, among fellow progressives, and even conservatives, who believe that NOW is the time to ACT.

I decided to carry a sign wherever I go in Portland, essentially becoming, as one passerby dubbed me, a "one man parade." My aim is to try to make people think... "Wow, if this guy is so committed and so passionate that the Bush Administration (hereafter BushCo) is destroying the USA, he is daily carrying a sign and connecting with hundreds/thousands of people on the way to and from work, maybe I should be doing more, or at least something... I, too, am disgusted with what is happening to this country, under the leadership of a cadre of politicians that doesn't believe in any role for Government beyond making war and enriching the wealthy!"

Military training at Portland Public Schools
Heads up everyone! My daughter, age 10, brought home a flyer from school saying that they were to have "educational training" in science, math, etc. at the Jackson Armory and Portland Air Base. Personally I think its the beginning of military indoctrination and sorting out children at an early age to be coroprate soldiers. To quote the flyer:

"STARBASE is a partnership between Portland Public Schools, and the Oregon National Guard. Congressional appropriations were avaliable through the Secretary of Defense for this innovative program as part of the National Guard's commitment. The Oregon National Guard is providing facilities at the Jackson Armory, Portland Air Base and volunteer Oregon National Guard personel to serve as guests speakers during five days of field experiences."

Personally I see Donald Rumsfeld funding soldiers to talk to my child as a red flag. How about you?

West Nile Confirmed in Multnomah County
Public health officials have confirmed today that two dead birds found in Multnomah County have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Both birds were from the corvid family. Looks like it might be a good idea to take some mosquito precautions.

This is not the deadly bird flu that has been making its way across the world in migrating bird populations. West Nile is a much less virulent disease, and cannot be spread to people by either birds or other humans. It is spread by mosquitoes, through their bites. There is no need to panic, as most people with West Nile experience either no symptoms, or very mild, flu-like symptoms. Fewer than 1% of people who get the disease will ever go on to develop the much more serious complications that have made headlines in the past.
