On Wednesday, March 21st at 12 noon, members of the community and the Portland Solidarity Network, with and on behalf of Gary and Julie Frost, will be holding another picket outside the Home Forward offices at 135 SW Ash Street.
The picket is part of the Solidarity Network's current campaign, Home Forward is Home Backward (  http://www.HomeForwardisHomeBackward.org), which is fighting to stop Home Forward from unfairly evicting the Frosts from their apartment in the Humboldt Gardens. This week's picket is one in a series of actions designed to tell Home Forward's management' that their residents and the community at-large will not accept mistreatment and retaliatory evictions.
Campaign volunteers, alongside individual community members, have been working overtime - on their own time - since the Frosts were given a ninety-day eviction notice in January. Portland General Electric is hosting an open house in downtown Portland to promote their proposed Cascade Crossing project. This 209 mile energy transmission corridor spans from Boardman, Oregon to the Salem area, and traverses private land as well as both the Willamette and Mt Hood National Forests. Judge j. bybee came to Portland and we were there to meet him. We, of noble intentions were there, we stood for an hour starting about 0800 and left after court started. Malcolm flew his VFP flag with the stars and stripes and we told our story of the "Bug" Judge to be repeated during the time he is in Portland, March 5-9. You all know of the water boarding, the way he got his name by saying it is ok and legal for the President to order torture but you must not call it torture. We will be there tomorrow at 1130-1:00 PM, stop by for a bit to join byee for lunch. We did not see him today, he is hiding from us---fits with his personality of cowardice. Mt. Hood National Forest has released a Preliminary Assessment (PA) for the Jazz Timber Sale and comments are due by Monday, December 19th.The Jazz Timber Sale is proposed by the Forest Service to log 2,000 acres in the Collawash Watershed, the most geologically unstable watershed in Mt. Hood. The sale would require 11 miles of roads that have been previously decommissioned to be re-opened to facilitate logging and has prevented still more miles of roads that are damaging water quality and aquatic habitat from being decommissioned while the Jazz Timber Sale has been in the planning stages. Veterans for Peace, Chapter 72, will be gathering at Pioneer Courthouse Square for their seventh annual commemoration of this solemn day. The public is invited to help commemorate this day "...with thanksgiving, prayer and exercises designd to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations...."
Armistice Day (Veterans' Day, Remembrance Day) Commemoration Friday, November 11 Pioneer Courthouse Square, downtown Portland 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, it became "All quiet on the Western Front." An armistice signed at six o'clock that morning took effect and brought a ceasefire to the "War to End All Wars." Since that fateful day, most nations which fought in that conflict observe Armistice Day. Unfortunately, the horrors of World War I were to be outdone by those of World War II and to honor the sacrifices of the veterans who fought in it, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. While it is fitting and proper to honor all veterans for their service, it is a shame that the original intent of November 11 has become lost to the militarization and commercialization of this important date.
