THING I WILL TELL MY SENATOR,
From the open publishing newswire:
Eco-film series sponsored by Cascadia Wildlands Project and the University of Oregon Survival Center in Eugene has showings Wednesday nights.
Environmental awareness is a year round endeavor. Winter weather prevents some from getting out into the forest and directly experience nature at its best, and worst making it easy to overlook the fragile state of the environment today. Cascadia Wildlands Project and the University of Oregon Survival Center have teamed up to remind you of the importance of environmental awareness, both locally and globally, by bringing you "Eco-Video-the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," an environmental film series running a gamut of film subjects in order to keep reality exposed.

Student General Strike - A fight to save Oregons future
Who: We are calling for all groups in Portland to support a student led, student organized student general strike. We need all people from all communites because we feel that all people have been affected by the gutting of our budgets and we need them to say "NO MORE".
From the open publishing newswire: As an activist I hear a lot about what is going on in this community. I hear about what people are working on and what needs are being seen in their communities. Tonight, I heard about budget cuts, as many of you have as well I'm sure. I heard from a teacher that has been attending meetings talking strike. I heard about a friend that works for United Cerebral Palsy and how they are going to be cutting positions and dropping people from there case loads. I heard from people that rely on the Oregon Health Plan to supply them with the mental health care they need. The social welfare state is failing to meet there needs.
Now is the time to come together as communities and address these needs the state feels are less important than war! Turn to your communities to find out what needs your neighbor has and evaluate what skills and time you have to fill them. There are folks in YOUR COMMUNITY that need you. Likewise many of the voids left by the gutting of social services you have can be filled by your neighbor. Call a community meeting. Find the biggest church you can in your neighborhood. Knock on every door and poster on ever telephone pole. Call people to an assembly and take a lesson from the piqueteros in Argentina and organize locally. Sit down as a community and discuss these hard times as a community.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION AT REED COLLEGE!
Events include lectures, readings, and an art exhibition
Reed College will celebrate Black History Month in February with four notable visitors: Randall Robinson, internationally respected advocate for human rights and democracy; renowned sociologist Orlando Patterson; poet, playwright, and activist Sonia Sanchez; and noted Portland artist Isaka Shamsud-Din. Events include lectures, readings, and an art exhibition. All events are free and open to the public; for information see http://web.reed.edu/publicevents or call the Reed events line at 503/777-7755.
From the open publishing newswire: We, the committee to form a Northwest Federation of Anarchist Communists, call for a convergence in Seattle, Washington, home of the WTO protests, to strike at the heart of the forces whose goals are to undermine all human rights, criminalize dissent, jail, harass and torture activists, and even commit legal murder of people of color and dissidents alike, in the name of "Homeland Security", "Fighting Terrorism" and "Criminal Intelligence". We call for all that have been victimized, or feel that they will become victimized, by this unprecedented consolidation of police power to join in solidarity and return to Seattle.
The Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit is holding its annual conference in Seattle, on June 2,3,4,5 and 6th. The organizers of this conference have invited Attorney General John Ashcroft, Director of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge (who conspired to imprison and murder journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal), Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force member John Cooney; FBI Assistant Director John Pistole, New York City Police Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence, and Former CIA agent David Cohen will attend. The purpose of this conference is for law enforcement, from local police to the FBI to the CIA and military, to further consolidate their power and organization, and to improve "the current state of intelligence sharing/processing among local and federal law enforcement agencies; and [to discuss] specifics as to what local law enforcement can do to better support the war on terrorism". We all know that the war on terrorism is a pretext for the war of the State against the population: people of color, immigrants, and political activists inside as well as outside the United States.
We call for this to be the first action of many to dismantle the institution of Police Terrorism, disguised as Homeland Security and its regional manifestations of FBI/law enforcement partnerships. We must expose this legal crime network to the people of this country, and destroy any and all legitimacy they may have.
From the open publishing newswire: On February 15, 2003, millions around the globe will march in opposition to the escalation of this war. We call on all who seek a world free of the oppression of authoritarianism, capitalism, ethnic hatred and religious fundamentalism to participate in this unprecedented mobilization, through convergences in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Aotearoa, Athens, Bangkok, Barcelona, Belfast, Berlin, Berne, Brussels, Budapest, Cairo, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edmonton, Glasgow, Helsinki, Istanbul, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, Lisbon, Madrid, Manila, Montreal, New York, Oslo, Paris, [Portland,?] Prague, Ramallah, Rome, San Francisco, San Juan, Sao Paulo, Skopje, Stockholm, Sydney, Tallinn, Tokyo, Toronto, Vienna, Warsaw, and anywhere else, and to escalate this component of the struggle against the ruling class through direct action, including strikes, sabotage, sickouts, occupations, civil disobedience, and the mass reclamation of public space. Let's make our resistance to war visible in as many ways as possible! [ Read More... ]
From the open publishing newswire: 74 dedicated bicyclists participated in the January 31 Critical Mass ride despite the wet weather. Highlights of the ride included a reprise of the November 2002 Courthouse Square circling, and corking of a monster SUV limo and a police car downtown at 6th and Main, with no citations or arrests! The ride also took a detour through the Taco Bell drive-through on Burnside, and the riders' calls for 'Car Free Friday' were heard up and down NW 23rd and NW 21st. The ride crossed the river on the bicycle-unfriendly Morrison Bridge, to highlight the need for bicycle access and safety improvements on this bridge. Hand-sewn satin CM capes were available for everyone to wear, the bicycle cops left before we started, and there was more honking and hooting than on any ride ever. The ride took all the lanes and it was ok, due to the expertise of our corkers and the general lack of motor traffic. [ Read More... ]
From the open publishing newswire: Beginning Monday Feb 3 at 7:00 PM, Portland Indymedia will begin broadcasting internet radio. The daily broadcasts will last about 2-3 hours. We hope to eventually start producing enough content for a 24-hour broadcast (or perhaps a 12-hour broadcast that repeats so that late night listeners don't miss anything), however, this all depends upon how mush support we can get from the indymedia community.
If you are interested in becoming a part of the Portland Indymedia radio project, then please email editorial. There are a number of ways you can help, ranging from providing your own content to using your computer to help rebroadcast so that we can handle even more listeners (the current limit at any given time is about 10). The radio project group meets every saturday at the Red and Black Cafe (around se 22nd and Division) at 4pm, right before the editorial meeting, so you can show up there as well if you are interested in helping.

From the open publishing newswire: Inspired by indigenous world views and culture, armed with cutting-edge media arts, welcome to a culture designed to organically organize and educate artists with the intention of creating new mythologies.
Myth Media Non-for-profit was founded in January 2002 by a small group of high school dropouts. Each with their own individual talents in the media arts, held together with a clear vision of sustainability. The fundamental principles of the organization came from reading the book "Ishmael" and other works by author Daniel Quinn. "We felt we had to abandon school and every form of this culture that we possibly can, so that our grandchildren might have a chance." says filmmaker Peter Bauer, "Seeing our culture exposed in a simple and straight forward way drove us mad."
With the act (or non-act) of abandoning civilization comes the charge to create, inspire, and invent. That is exactly what they are doing. [ Read More... ]
From the open publishing newswire: Pepto Dizmal, Clownabilly extraordinaire, along with Vivian Section, Jesse London, Stizzy and two spectacular firedancing members of Cirkus Pandemonium rocked the Red & Black on the 29th to raise funds for the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign [SHAC]. The campaign to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) is fast becoming one of the most significant in animal rights movement's history. The speed, methodology, and determination with which one of the world's biggest animal testing laboratories is being brought to it's knees, almost entirely by the efforts of volunteer grassroots activists, denotes the endless possibilities of what what a small community of passionate campaigners can do.
SHAC pdx thanks wholeheartedly those that came out to support the cause and to make a donation to end the atrocities at HLS. [ Read More... ]

From the open publishing newswire: Feb 1 2003, to start off Black history Month, Pam Afrika and Vessala Mohammad Vay gave impassioned speeches on Reparations at PSU. They explained that Reparations are long overdue for descendants of Afrikan slaves and for all who continue to suffer from the legacy left by slavery and the institutionalized racism that is perpetuated when we all refuse to address this huge barrier to creating social, economic, and political change for the purpose of liberating all who suffer in this classist, racist, sexist system.
As Pam has pointed out repeatedly over the years, this nation was built on the backbones of the blood and sweat and tears of black slave labor. Payment is owed for those years of backbreaking labor. The legacy of lowered earning power and racist institutions, including schools, banks, and especially the prison industrial complex, has resulted in the perpetuation of slavery to this day.
Vessala also spoke passionately about the purpose of this Reparations movement: To put this in her words: This is a movement to bring about equality through creating a change in this unjust system. This is an Afrikan agenda but it is of concern to ALL people. "Black People have no future under the present structure and authority in the U.S" This is the statement of the New Black Panther Party 30 years ago, and it is still true today. For until freedom is had for all living beings, nobody is truly free... It is Corporate America who must pay, and who must be taken down! [ Read More... ]

From the open publishing newswire: I was not prepared for this film, for the realistic and shocking scenes of the brutal killing of Jews in Poland. I think viewer warning is appropriate for a film of this intensity since this is one of the most graphic Nazi films that I've seen. When I was describing scenes to my friend, who did not see the film, he said that perhaps my deep disturbance is due to the fact that I do not watch T.V. and am not as desensitized to watching people being murdered. He also said that people may need this sort of shock value to break through the hypnosis that our culture is under.
Throughout most of the film I kept thinking to myself that I would've preferred death to the struggle and atrocities that the Jewish people were forced to endure. Partly because I could not tolerate watching others being mistreated and murdered. Partly because I could not tolerate being controlled and told what to do. And partly because I do not know that I possess the stamina to persist in cases of extreme starvation, enervation and exhaustion. I have untold reverence for those, like the main character in this film (a young Polish man), who rose above it all and came through on the other side as a survivor. [ Read More... ]
From the open publishing newswire: On January, 19, Harvard professor Charles Ogletree spoke at the Reflections Bookstore in Northeast Portland on the topic of Reparations for the descendants of African American slaves. The event was preview of sorts of the upcoming Northwest Regional Reparations Conference, which is taking place at Portland State University from February 28 to March 2.
Reparations is a controversial topic, but Ogletree stated strongly that it is "an idea whose time has come". He characterized the battles during the 70's for civil rights, integration, and affirmative action as "piecemeal, partial, simplistic and very limited remedies for our problems" that did not result in real, significant change. The demand for Reparations, he said, is "not about a lawyer, or a politician, or any person -- it's about people." Paying back the debt would give African Americans the resources needed to overcome centuries of abuse and to create a new reality to replace the racist system that currently runs the country. From the open publishing newswire: U.S. Iraq war plans center on a new strategy called "Shock and Awe," intended to produce the same overwhelming physical and psychological devastation the US achieved by dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The plans for dropping the atomic bomb were secret. The plans for devastating the city of Baghdad -- a city of five million people -- are public. Below are three articles about it .
We can't say we didn't know. All we can say is that our system didn't make it easy for us to prevent it. [ Read More... ]
US plans 'shock and awe' blitzkrieg in Iraq
Washington is making it clear that it considers nuclear weapons an option in Iraq. In recent days Pentagon sources have let it be known that such "weapons of mass destruction" are being readied for use, and there is a real possibility that the Bush administration will unleash them should American forces find themselves in serious difficulty.
Even without recourse to nuclear arms, the US war plan calls for saturation bombing of Iraq. The Pentagon intends to devastate the country with more missiles in one day than were used throughout the 40-day Gulf War 12 years ago. The World Health Organization is warning that up to half a million Iraqi people will be killed or maimed. [ Read More... ]
From the open publishing newswire: In the 1950's, tens of thousands of people sent small bags of rice to President Eisenhower convincing him not to attack China. (If you are of a different faith than Christian, substitute a statement from your own faith tradition.) From the open publishing newswire: Why is it that everyone here is so negative about everything? Can anyone answer this question without more hate and anger? It doesn't matter what the subject matter is here because the answer is always more negativity. The majority of the people who post here seem to have very clear opinions on every single issue that is going on in the world yet most of the time they offer absolutely no solutions to the problems they feel so strongly about...
Its very interesting to see you talk amongst yourself and trade ideas and information but because of the general content of the information expressed on this site that is about as far as it goes because the real message gets lost with all your catchy buzz words and phrases. You are not reaching out to anyone, in fact with the general misanthropic attitudes continuously expressed around here you are further distancing yourself from the public and serving no purpose other than stimulating your own egotistical self-loathing.
[H]ere's some negativity for ya. Get a goddam clue before you start throwing wild accusations around, when it's clear all you are is a status-quo junkie with a chip on his or her shoulder, do to the growing distaste for your blind-and-ignorant status-quo lifestyle. Perhaps the reason you don't "understand this place" is because you are a clueless kneebiting dimwit. [ Join the discussion ]
From the open publishing newswire: On Friday, January 24, at 4:45 pm, 25 members and friends of the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel gathered in front of the Starbucks branch on Verdun St. to stage a drink-in protesting Starbucks' economic and ideological support of Israel. This was the Campaign's third Drink-In this month targeting the Starbucks at Beirut's most expensive and elite shopping mall. Aimed at the after-work leisure crowd, each drink-in has involved a short play called "Starbucks & Israel", free Arabic coffee for passers-by, the music of clinking porcelain coffee cups, distribution of brochures with documented information on Starbucks' investment in Israel, and colorful posters and banners.
Starbucks has been the subject of international outrage because of its CEO¹s ideological support for Israel as a Zionist oppressor of Palestinian human rights and for the company's application of this ideology by investing in the Israeli economy at a time when the cost of military actions against Palestinians has overwhelmed it and despite the losses Israeli Starbucks branches accrue to the Washington-based corporation. Three months after returning from a trip to Israel to study the situation so he [could] promote Israel's case abroad, Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, appeared at a rally of the Jewish Federation of Seattle where he compared the Palestinian Intifada to Nazi anti-semitism and condemned Palestinians who were in the midst of the siege of Jenin for not stopping terrorism.
Within an hour of their arrival, some 40 soldiers from the Lebanese Army arrived on the scene, surrounded the protestors and demanded their immediate dispersal under threat of arrest. The demand, completely unconstitutional, set an entirely new tone for government response to boycott activities in Lebanon that have taken place regularly throughout the past year. It comes on the eve of American aggression against Iraq and signals the government¹s intention to squelch local protest to Arabs' implication in this war.
