From the open publishing newswire: Some recent information gathered from the web on various actions carried out the the A.L.F.[Animal Liberation Front] on behalf of the earth and animals. Thought I'd share this with others who may not be familiar to this movement... In the 30 years or more that the ALF has been around no person or animal has been injured by any of their actions. Although they sometimes use means such as arson to conduct economic sabotage, which some people may find controversial, these actions are a reflection of the fact that governments, law enforcement agencies, and other institutions have chosen to ignore their responsibilities of upholding the law and enforcing it, or simply choose to actively support or turn a blind eye to those who profit from the exploitation of the earth and the brutality that is regularly carried out against the animals.
At 2:00 AM on November 26, 2002, anonymous cells of the A.L.F. and the E.L.F. [Earth Liberation Front] visited the Mindek Brothers Fur Farm (4200 Shannon Road) in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania. Before disappearing into the night, a large fire was set which completely destroyed the farms feed barn and its contents, causing extensive financial loss. The A.L.F. is also claiming responsibility for releasing 200 breeding mink in May and 50+ in September from the same farm.
Working together, cells from A.L.F. & E.L.F. demolished this feed facility due to its role in the systematic torture and killing of thousands of innocent creatures yearly - animals which possess the same complex emotional/physiological traits as loved household pets, yet are denied all reasonable consideration and confined to a miserable "existence" in tiny wire cages hardly large enough to turn around in. The PPRC weekly rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square this Friday, at 5:00 p.m., focuses once again on the Bush Administration's determination to launch a war on Iraq. "At every step in the international effort to find peaceful means to assure that Iraq is disarmed, the US government has been pushing for war," said Chris Roehm of the PPRC. "The Bush administration will go to war regardless of whether the UN inspectors find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq ..." [ Details ] [ The War against Crisis ]
From the open publishing newswire: This summer several groups formed the Oregon Public Power Coalition. OPPC is creating People's Utility Districts throughout PGE's service area. Currently we have petitions circulating in the 5 counties in PGE's service area: Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Yamhill & Marion/Polk, a combined petition.
A People's Utility District [PUD] is one form of public ownership of utilities. A PUD is owned by the its ratepayers & run to benefit them. PUD's are managed by a 5-member board of directors who are elected by the ratepayers. Meetings are open to the public. Our current electric company, PGE, is an Investor-Owned Utility [IOU]; owned by shareholders. An IOU benefits its shareholders, not its customers. Management is hired and meetings are not public.
At this point, PGEs current shareholder is Enron, which owns 100% of PGE's stock. Now Enron is bankrupt and has been ordered by the federal bankruptcy court to auction off PGE to satisfy its creditors - banks and Wall Street investment firms... We need to get control of these assets now. It's important that this PUD effort succeed. Otherwise we will continue to be vulnerable to takeover by other Enrons.
We need petitioners to collect signatures in all counties. We need campaigners to: design campaign materials, canvass neighborhoods, staff tables at events, host house parties, call voters to Get Out the Vote! [ Read More... ]
From VHeadline.com, an online journal of independent news about Venezuela, as posted to the portland indymedia open publishing newswire: Thursday, December 12, 2002 -- Uruguayan EP-FA congressman Jose Bayardi says he has information that far-reaching plans have been put into operation by the CIA and other North American intelligence agencies to overthrow Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias within the next 72 hours.
Bayardi says he has received copies of top-secret communications between the Bush administration in Washington and the government of Uruguay requesting the latter's cooperation to support white collar executives and trade union activists "to break down levels of intransigence within the Chavez Frias administration."
In an interview with reporters from the Uruguyan newspaper La Juventud, Bayardi says he observes a domestic-political situation in Venezuela which could easily erupt into a civil war and bloodbath ... "the whole process is a shocking reminder of what happened in Chile in 1973 ... I sincerely hope it does not come to that!" [ Read More... ]

From the open publishing newswire: Borg is one of nearly 60 timber sales targeting the Mt. Hood National Forest, and one of 7 sale targeting the mature and old growth forests in the Oak Grove Watershed. Logging this area has increased the risk of fire and degraded water quality. In an attempt to halt logging activists blockaded the access roads on several occasions. Four activists (the Borg 4) were arrested at the Borg timber sale road blockades in the end of August. No charges were filed against these activists at that time. However, the District Attorney, had two years to file those charges and has now done so. Please attend the arraignments to support the Borg 4 and the non-violent civil disobedience used to protect the Oak Grove Watershed. Contact Cascadia Forest Alliance (CFA) to donate legal defense funds and if you plan to attend the arraignments.
The newly scheduled arraignments are on TUES DEC 17th, at 3pm at the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City, Room 200. Sadly, many Americans know little about the situation in Iraq. According to the United Nations, many hundreds of thousands of Iraq's children have died due to a decade of harsh sanctions. Many deaths are caused by diseases transmitted through polluted drinking water and other unsanitary conditions. Such illnesses could be easily cured. Yet individuals who send food or medicine to these children without state approval are slapped with $10,000 fines. Meanwhile, efforts to tie Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein to the destruction of the World Trade Center have not been persuasive. What seems more likely is that the pending war against Iraq is being orchestrated at the behest of multinational oil interests. Information on the situation in Iraq, and on efforts of dedicated individuals to effect change, may be found at http://www.ccmep.org. This series [of four posters] features children from the cities of Basra, Baghdad, Mosul, and Arbil. Please forward these posters to friends, family, and associates who may be interested in this important issue. [ More Posters ]
Sheik Mohamed Abdirahman Kariye is one of many black Muslims who are being targeted by the resurgence in nationalized racism commonly referred to as the War on Terror. Kariye, a Portland resident originally from Somaliland, is a well-known international spiritual leader who travels and lectures extensively. Last September, Kariye was arrested at the Portland Airport by the Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force amidst huge headlines of purported TNT traces found in his luggage. The newspapers in the days following the arrest were filled with accusations and innuendos of Kariye's involvement with global terrorism, and yet the only legal charges against him were Social Security fraud and possessing a government document. Ten days later, a small article appeared in the back pages of these same newspapers (if it appeared at all) that quietly announced the FBI had failed to detect any traces of TNT in Kariye's luggage. Indeed, the final charge against Kariye is one count of Social Security fraud, to which he pleads not guilty.
The impact of this kind of media bias is quite predictable. The stories and rumors initially written by a handful of unethical and racist reporters and editors (for example, Jim Redden of the Portland Tribune) get endlessly recycled through the various newspaper, television and radio outlets until the public begins to believe that Kariye really is guilty until proven innocent.
And it does not stop there ... The groundwork is being set for massive roundups of people to be either deported, arrested or detained based on their nationality, religion, and race. Indeed, this process is already underway and precedes the predictable fascist state that history abhors. There is a way out of the mess, but only if the American public stands up for the ideals it claims to uphold; for instance, the right to a fair trial (this includes equal access to evidence), access to a lawyer (this includes client/lawyer confidentiality), and the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. No excuses. Find your voice. It is desperately needed. [ Details ]

After the November 30th [CORRECTION: DEC 1ST] protests against HLS at the Trenton, NJ site of the torture/extermination camp, people broke up into groups to proceed to 4 to 5 home demos. Injunctions had been passed against home demos in New Jersey, in anticipation of the anti-HLS protests. Since the injunctions prohibited gatherings of more than 15 people and set end-times at 6pm, SHAC organizers got permits for approximately 20 residences, mostly of senior "scientists" at HLS such as Fiona Fraser-Smith. Each animal torturer had its own set of cops... [ More info ]
HOME-DEMO AT TERESA'S (HLS EMPLOYEE) - personal account
On December 1st there was a protest at Huntingdon Life Sciences (the world's largest product testing laboratory) in New Jersey. About 200 to 300 animal rights activists gathered outside of Huntingdon Life Sciences to protest animal testing and the inhumane treatment of animals, including dogs, cats, mice, primates etc. (These animals are forced to inhale and ingest products such as weed killers, detergents, Viagra, and diet pills, for weeks or months on end. Then they are killed and dissected.) Following the protest was an effective home demonstration at Teresa's (HLS EMPLOYEE) in Pennsylvania. Her neighbors came out to join the 40 some protesters, voicing their opinion. One woman quietly watched the activists chant "QUIT YOUR JOB!", and various people yelling through a couple of megaphones on how they feel about Teresa from across the street. The woman looked back and forth at the torturer's house to the activists and then spoke up. She told me that her husband used to beat their Doberman, one time he hit him in the face so hard he made the dog's nose bleed. She then told me "It wasn't too long before he started beating me, so then I had to leave him." [ Full Story ]

From the open publishing newswire: On the night of December 6, snipers firing on a demonstration in Caracas opposing the Chavez presidency killed three and wounded more than twenty people. Venezuela is at fever pitch following a week of striking, demonstrations and rhetoric. Right-wing alliances and the private media are working 24/7 to motivate Venezuelans into a revolt, with or without cause. This follows months of tensions in the country after the failed April 11 coup attempt.
A "civic strike" was organized and held for days by the opposition, targetted particularly at PDVSA, the national oil company and one of the world's larget oil extractors. As this has progressed, tensions between the pro and anti government factions, concentrated in east and west Caracas, respectively, have been growing. Amid the tension, there have been rumors [ espanol ] of an impending coup attempt. By early morning on Tuesday, December 10, mass protests were held outside of the commercial television stations, and the coup threat subsided [ espanol ].

There's a brief item in today's edition of Willamette Week, partially the result of a 20-minute conversation with the writer of the piece last week. As usual, here are some comments from us. And this time around, there are some fairly important responses to make. Durston [ ] noted that the resolution is fairly broad and that debate on an anti-war measure--which a coalition of groups is supporting--might take precedence if military action is taken against Iraq. Such resolutions have passed in 23 U.S. cities, including Seattle, San Francisco and Detroit.
Our proposed resolution in support of civil liberties is not broad at all. As we have been stating repeatedly, it focuses mainly on only two things: Reaffirming the City of Portland's commitment to our rights as protected by both the Federal constitution and Oregon law (the latter, of course, we've already called upon to resist the FBI questioning of Arab- and Muslim-Americans); and calling for the appropriate notifications, transparencies, accountabilities, and oversight authorities to be properly exercised.
How, exactly, is that a "broad" resolution? One part reiterates existing law, the other requests accountabiity. That's essentially it. Those are the central focuses of this resolution. That the resolution is two pages long does not make it broad, merely specific.
Frankonis [Christopher Frankonis, a member of the Portland Bill of Rights Committee] isn't sure why Portland has been comparatively slow to join the campaign, though he suspects the rabble-rousing crowd interrupting Joint Terrorism Task Force hearings probably hasn't helped sell the cause ... In addition, we've begun to express the possibility that the size of Portland's population as compared to cities with resolutions may also be a factor in the comparative pace ... Report of Werkgroep Vluchtelingen Vrij (Refugees Free working party) regarding an action resisting the eviction of a Sudanese refugee family by the City of Groningen (Netherlands) Groningen, 10 December - In observance of International Human Rights Day, the Groningen police forcibly rendered a refugee family homeless. This morning, a group of a hundred people, including refugees and sympathizers, formed a human shield to protest the eviction by the City of Groningen of the Mahamad family, who are refugees from the Sudan. This family, consisting of a woman, man and children aged 8, 5 and 2, have been wards of the City of Groningen under VVTV (conditional permission to stay) regulations. With a great display of power and violence on the part of the police, people were dragged through the stairwell, beaten and driven outside. One woman suffered a broken arm which had to be put in a cast at the hospital. Others were bruised. [ Full Story ] [ Netherlands IMC Story ]

From the open publishing newswire: One week ago, Monday, December 2, 2002, a hundred activists from the New York Coalition to Close HLS converged on Andrew Baker's doorstep in New York City. Rounding up a weekend of action in protest of HLS's 50th birthday, this was the first home visit Baker has received as part of the campaign to close Huntingdon Life Sciences. We can only speculate it won't be the last.
This week lay into Baker's company Focused Healthcare Partners like you've never done before. Andrew Baker is the cold heart and dark soul of HLS, acting at the lab's CEO and controller of nearly 40% of LSRI (HLS) shares. It's Baker's wheeling and dealing that has twice saved HLS from foreclosure...it's up to you to make sure he doesn't do it a third time!
Baker is technically employed by FHP. HLS pays FHP to employ him and his "expertise" to act as HLS CEO and Chairman; Baker then takes his salary from FHP. FHP is the vehicle he uses to support HLS...that is, until we dismantle it.

From the open publishing newswire: 800 people attended Saturday's protest against the City for its harrassment of St. Francis of Assisi parish. Fulfilling a traditional -- and generally respected -- role for churches, St. Francis offers food, medical help, and a safe area to homeless people and others in need.
As Oregon's economy continues its downward slide and more government services are cut, more and more people are going to community churches seeking help, according to St. Francis' Pastoral Administrator Valerie Chapman. Recently, the Portland Police declared St. Francis a "chronic nuisance" and threatened to close down the property, using a law that was promulgated to crack down on drug houses.
The Metropolitan Alliance for Common Good, of which St. Francis parish is a member, organized a rally to support the church against the city, to protest a number of social service cuts coming down the pike, and to campaign for Measure 28.

From the open publishing newswire: In our disguised fascist system Noam Chomsky plays an important role: he helps maintain the facade of democracy. To the American elite, Chomsky is a virtual asset. Here's why:
1. Chomsky has become a walking, talking, lecturing contradiction—-and it helps to confuse people. Confusion is one way to sow insecurity and instability in groups already alienated and marginalized from the current modes of action:
- Despite his past discussions on the contradiction between freedom of speech in the media and the lack of access to the major networks (which demand absurd time constraints on issues of global importance); despite his past discussions on media distortion, censorship and the 'manufacturing of consent'; despite the people suffering in jail for having spoken the truth a little too boisterously and passionately; despite the assassination of influential activists; despite the third-world conditions, including third-world-like police repression, in African-American ghettos; despite all of this, Chomsky still boasts that the American system and government provides a commendable amount of freedom to engage in various positive—falling short of revolutionary—actions. He rarely, if ever, admits that any action truly harming U.S. corporate interest and exposing the extent of corruption is immediately subdued, often very brutally.
- Despite the plethora of facts proving irregularities in the official media version of 9/11 and proving the existence of a great deception being carried out on the world, Chomsky patently refuses to acknowledge this form of alternative journalism at a time when it is so drastically needed. So much for Mr. Manufacturing Consent and his 'outstanding moral integrity', for he is showing intellectual elitism in his will to bend to left side of a fascist system!
