Lauren Regan, founder of the Eugene Oregon based Civil Liberties Defense Center speaking at the recent Roots of Resistance Conference held in Portland Oregon, organized by Jesus Radicals.
The Conference, held in Portland Oregon on the week end of August 6th and 7th, explored themes of Christian Anarchism, violent vs non violent strategies, among others.
Lauren, along with Tre Arrow, spoke Sunday morning on a panel entitled, "Navigating the Security Culture, Activism in a Posts 911 World."
According to the flyer for the event, "the aim of this session is ................to inform people about laws that criminalize dissent and that make it exceedingly difficult to work for social change." Regan, who is a public interest attorney specializing in civil rights, criminal defense and environmental law, has successfully represented hundreds of political activists in both civil and criminal litigation. After first discussing some of her cases, she enumerates 4 main methods used by law enforcement to infiltrate, intimidate, marginalize and discourage organizations seeking to bring about social change as well as ways that activists can evade and neutralize these methods.

On September 1, 2010, TriMet, according to one source a $2.5 billion transit agency, is set to cutback on 60 bus routes and implement a five cents per ride fare hike. One transit group has set a 'wake' of sorts, mourning the loss and fare hike, for AFTER the austerity measures occur. Transit Riders Union is organizing NOW against the cuts and the fare hike.
TriMet's unelected board of directors voted 6-1 (Lynn Lehrbach with the Teamsters voted no) to implement the Sept. 1, 2010 five cents a ride fare hike. The unelected TriMet board also voted to cut back on 60 bus routes Sept. 1. This will be the third round of service cuts and second fare hike in the past two years. New TriMet board president Rick Van Beveren has voted for all five 'transit shock doctrine' austerity cuts and fare hikes.
So far, TRU has held one picket at Portland Business Alliance to protest TriMet cuts and fare hikes. PBA pushed for the elimination of Fareless Square, year after year (along with sit-lie 1 amd 2). PBA just donated $5,000 to the campaign of Tom Hughes for Metro president, and Hughes has been endorsed by the Tribune and the Oregonian. A new, appointed-in-secret member of the TriMet board is Steve Clark, president of the Portland Tribune.
Come help transit riders and organizers stop the cuts and the fare hike!
Yesterday, August 9th, oral arguments for Eric's appeal were heard at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Most of the discussion focused on the incorrect written response to a question the jurors asked during deliberations at Eric's trial (the oral answer to a jury question was the complete opposite from the written answer - the jury reached a guilty verdict soon after). The presiding judge on the panel seemed particularly interested in this issue (she wrote a previous decision for the 9th circuit in which a case was reversed due to an erroneous jury instruction).
The prosecution, lacking any solid arguments about why this issue was "harmless error," resorted (as they usually do) to their typical bag of tricks and lies. We know we probably don't need to go into detail here - but just keep this in mind if you choose to listen to the arguments.
If you are interested in listening to yesterday's proceedings in their entirety, they are posted on the 9th Circuit's website at:
On July 12, 2010, Judge Ronald Whyte ruled to dismiss the indictment of the AETA4. His ruling stated the indictment violated federal rules of criminal procedure, as well as the defendants' fifth amendment rights by not providing detail into the alleged crimes that were committed. In the days following the ruling, the Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case stated to the AETA4 defense team that the government would contact them with their plans by August 13, 2010.
However, yesterday, one of the defense attorneys received a call from the U.S. Attorney. The call was to the effect that although she had promised us some kind of communication on or about August 13 regarding status, she is still working on it and we should not expect to hear anything regarding status before mid-September. She would/could not go into any details about what is going to happen.
We'll keep you posted. Continue to support those facing charges under the unconstitutional Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.
A warning to anyone who has received computer security services from someone going by hard_mac, or rad_boy: Your consultant was once working for the FBI, and may still be. Since Darren Thurston's release from prison, the informant in the Green Scare A.L.F. / E.L.F. case has resurfaced as a computer security consultant.
Thurston became an asset for the federal government in the Green Scare case after his arrest on arson charges for the 2001 torching by the Animal Liberation Front of a BLM wild horse holding barn in Susanville, California. In exchange for reduced charges, he implicated several others in serious arsons.
Thurston's computer security consulting site can be viewed here. Perhaps not by coincidence, there is information another government informant, Justin Samuel, has also gone into the computer security field. Samuel provided 86 pages of testimony, and perhaps additional undocumented information, to prosecutors investigating mink releases in 1999.

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 31st about 65 people converged in downtown Portland to participate in the Call to Action Against Racism and Fascism, a coordinated effort by anti-racists in North America and beyond. In Portland, anti-racists from Portland Anti-Racist Action, Sisters of the Road, Rose City Copwatch, and Bring the Ruckus along with others from the community came together to oppose bigotry and white supremacist organizing in their city. The crowd was addressed by speakers from Rose City Copwatch and the Center for New Community who spoke to the need to confront racism and bridge struggles against white supremacist violence. The crowd then energetically marched through the Old Town neighborhood chanting "No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA!" The anti-racists marched to the home of Jeffrey Jay Thomas at the Sally McCracken Building. Thomas (AKA Skinhead J) is affiliated with Blood and Honour American Division--a neo-Nazi group--and has also been involved with National Socialist Movement. The flyer distributed by the demonstrators

On Saturday August 1st, 4 NEST surveyors were arrested in the Willamette National Forest. NEST (northwest ecosystem survey team) has been monitoring timber sales for over 10 years. NEST volunteers use NEPA and national forest guide lines to establish nesting zones for the red tree vole, the main diet of the northern spotted owl. NEST has worked with several Oregon National Forests to help establish breeding ground and habit for both endangered species.
On Friday July 31st, two Linn county sheriffs and a Forest Service LEO came to NEST camp. They harassed and threatened the few surveyors left back at camp. They claimed that the NEST camp was in private land and not the national forest. Though all public maps showed NEST camp on forest service land. The 4 NEST surveyors are facing criminal trespassing plus restitution. The police searched the camp and took pictures of the camp without a warrant.
If you wish to make donations or find out more about NEST or are interested in volunteering please contact NEST by Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Roseburg, Oregon 02 August 2010 - After over one year of pre-trial probation, the activists involved in the July 6-9, 2009 road blockade in the Elliott State Forest have finally faced sentencing. Twenty two of the twenty seven activists arrested plead "no contest," and were found guilty of Criminal Trespassing of the second degree, a class "C" misdemeanor.
Five of the twenty seven activists chose a jury trial over group litigation and had the charges dropped by the Douglas County District Attorney's office before trial. The remaining twenty two were divided into three equal groups and seen by three separate judges.
Restitution originally sought by law enforcement and the ODF totaled to more than $100,000 and included costs for catered lunch, transportation, and hotel rooms for the fifty nine law enforcement officers which included members of the National Guard, the Oregon State Police, and the Douglas County Sheriffs office. Most of these claims were found to be unlawful.
The struggle for Puerto Rican independance lost one of it's true warriors today.
"I did not come to kill. I came to die."
Early on March 27th 2010 Portland anti-racist activist Luke Querner was shot in what Rose City Anti-Fascists believe was a well planned attack by members of the Neo-Nazi movement. Following the shooting police chose to focus the investigation on the anti-racist activists allowing the fascists to roam free. Luke is paralysed from the chest down as a result of the brutal attack.
This attack is a perfect example of the growing fascist movement in the US, from Nazis patrolling the border to the Tea Party activists spreading racists views thanks in part to popular talk show host Glen Beck, who has his own show on the Fox network, amongst others.
Dramatic increases in infant mortality, cancer and leukaemia in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, which was bombarded by US Marines in 2004, exceed those reported by survivors of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, according to a new study.
Iraqi doctors in Fallujah have complained since 2005 of being overwhelmed by the number of babies with serious birth defects, ranging from a girl born with two heads to paralysis of the lower limbs. They said they were also seeing far more cancers than they did before the battle for Fallujah between US troops and insurgents.
Their claims have been supported by a survey showing a four-fold increase in all cancers and a 12-fold increase in childhood cancer in under-14s. Infant mortality in the city is more than four times higher than in neighboring Jordan and eight times higher than in Kuwait.

Thank you to everybody who wrote Portland City Council and came out to the hearing last night. Council received hundreds of emails opposing development on West Hayden Island and well over 150 people came to the hearing to express their opposition as well. The letters and testimony have been outstanding and demonstrate an amazing depth and breadth of opposition to West Hayden Island Development.
Unfortunately, City Council voted 4-0 (Randy Leonard was absent) to adopt the Mayor's resolution assigning the Bureau of Planning to develop a legislative proposal to allow 300 acres of industrial development on West Hayden Island. The resolution was improved to be more explicit that all development activities would be included within the 300 acres and to require additional analysis into cost/ benefits, alternatives and community impacts, but the bottom line is that the City is now going to spend hundreds of thousands of additional tax dollars moving West Hayden Island closer to development.
Someday this could all be pavement! What's Next
This is far from over. Annexation is still at least a year away. We intend to fight development on West Hayden Island every step of the way and we are planning lots of events over the next year to send an even stronger message. We will continue to need your help.
On the day that the controversial immigration law SB 1070 was introduced in Arizona, over a hundred people demonstrated in Holladay Park against the new law. Portland, Oregon, 29/07/2010
Originally the Act was signed into law by Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer on April 23rd 2010 and it came into effect today ninety days after the end of the legislative session. Shortened to either Arizona Senate Bill 1070 or SB 1070 it is otherwise known as the 'Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighbourhoods Act.'
Members of local collective B Media staged a 'Wedding of the Doomed' in front of the media and demonstrators to symbolise the marriage between the local law enforcement agencies and ICE (Immigration and customs enforcement). The marriage wouldn't have been right without some community intervention, which ended up stealing the show and standing up against the marriage of ICE and the Police.
A banner drop was made today opposite the Umpqua bank on 18th and Alberta street in Portland to raise awareness of the fact that the Chairman of the Board, Allyn Ford, is a timber baron of the Pacific Northwest. Portland, Oregon, USA. 27/07/2010.
Not only is Mr. Allyn C. Ford Chairman of the Board of Directors for Umpqua Bank, but he is also President of Roseburg Forest Products. According to their company history, "The company owns some 800,000 acres of timberland as well as processing plants in and around Roseburg, Dillard, and Riddle, Oregon, and in northern California."
People would like to see a boycott imposed on the bank for a number for reasons stemming from Mr. Ford's forestry company which has used methods such as clearcutting the forest combined with the use of toxic pesticides. Clearcutting or clearfelling is when all of the trees in a harvest area are cut down.
Fire and explosions tear through the twice-raided Ylipelto Mink Farm in Oregon[.]
After two successful raids, activists may have once again visited the Ylipelto Mink Farm in Oregon - this time to burn it down.
In the early hours of July 27th, a boat, car, two forklifts, front-end loader, and a barn were all damaged by fire. investigators have not yet ruled it arson, but have noted the farm has been targeted by the Animal Liberation Front in the past.
Owner Henry Pelto stated he awoke at 3 am to the sound of explosions, and found several pieces of equipment on fire.
The owner revealed new information after the fire: after being targeted twice by activists, the Ylipelto farm shut down in December 2009. While the there may be numerous contributing factors in the closure, it may be largely or wholly credited to the A.L.F.
This marks the second Oregon fur farm to apparently shut down after an A.L.F. raid. The S&N Fur Farm in Scio, Oregon was found to be empty in a summer 2009 investigation as part of the Fur Farm Intelligence Project (although there is conflicting evidence indicating the farm may still be open, or reopening in the near future). That farm was raided by the A.L.F. in September, 2008.

Over two months have passed and there is yet to be any relief from the steady gush of oil destroying wildlife, coastline, jobs, and lives in the Gulf of Mexico. Following the onslaught of oil, BP execs have proven time and again that their main priority is restoring their image-and their profits-rather than the fragile environment they laid waste. Meanwhile, government officials have done little to oversee BP's "clean up" efforts or reform the corrupt Mineral Management Services.
On top of this, offshore drilling continues with business as usual and no new regulations to prevent another blow out like the Deepwater Horizon from happening again. The crisis has put a spotlight on the way that capitalism sacrifices all other concerns for the sake of the bottom line, potentially producing even greater problems such as catastrophic climate change. Come to a presentation and discussion on the socialist alternative to unconstrained ecological devastation.
Protesters from Individuals for Justice and the Oregon Progressive Party demonstrated outside the office of Congressman Earl Blumenauer and delivered a petition to pressure him to sign on to bills H.R. 2404 and 3699. Portland, OR, USA, 21/07/2010.
One protester, Joe Roe held and wore a diaper with Earl and 4899 referring to the bill H.R. 4899. The bill was passed by the Senate in May and if signed by Obama would provide, "$34.7 billion to support US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq in addition to providing non-military assistance and building up State Department Operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
It also provides $24 billion to help keep teachers, police, and firefighters employed during the recession, $13 billion to Vietnam War veterans that have been exposed to Agent Orange, $2.8 billion for Haiti relief, $5.7 billion for PELL grants, $677 million to strengthen the border, $275 million for the Gulf oil spill, and $725 million to offset other needs."
