January 10, 2010 - The mainstream media continued aiding and abetting the dirty coal industry this week, in the genocidal targeting of American Indian lands for toxic and polluting industries that the rest of the world doesn't want in their backyards.
Hopi and Navajo fighting Peabody Coal mining on Black Mesa celebrated a victory this week when the US Interior Dept. rejected a mining permit for Peabody Coal. It is a victory that the majority of the mainstream media is ignoring. Hopi and Navajo have made it easy for even the laziest journalist, or the newspaper without a dime for travel, to cover the story. There are press statements online with abundant quotes from the Hopi and Navajo who took the action and live on the land. Their phone numbers are also on their press statements, so the mainstream media has no excuse. Censored News will even send the judge's order by e-mail to anyone that requests it.
It seems the mainstream media doesn't want to admit the truth about mining on Black Mesa. Journalists do not want to take the time to understand the facts.

Gayge of Setting The Record Straight will be facilitating a workshop on the construction (and deconstruction!) of whiteness, white privilege, and settler privilege. The workshop will utilize participatory learning and guided discussion.
The workshop will be at the Piedmont Deli at 7 pm on Monday the 11th, and is hosted by the STRS collective.
The Piedmont Deli is located at 441 N. Killingsworth, across the street from the North Portland Library.

This group in particular has been labeled as a white supremacist organization and not without reason. In the past they have hosted Holocaust deniers and supporters of the "National Socialist Movement" a known Neo-Nazi organization.
In they're last meeting, speaker Jimmy Marr invited all those in attendance to join him in giving the Sieg Heil salute. Marr also showed video footage from a National Socialist Movement demonstration in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Sea Shepherds' stealth ship, the Ady Gil, was just sunk by Japanese whalers in the Antarctic ocean.
The Ady Gil was idling near Commonwealth Bay,south of Hobart, when it was suddenly approached and intentionally rammed by the vessel Shonan Maru. This vessel had been accompanying the whaler Nisshin Maru, deployed to prevent the Sea Shepherds from interfering with the killing of whales.
The Ady Gil was cut in half, and sunk into the ocean. Thankfully, all hands were rescued from the sea.

SE Portland Urban Farmers seek help with seed increase in conjunction with a larger project to breed superior varieties and have enough seed on hand, no matter what happens, to feed town. For a 100% sliding scale contribution, you can help out and have a garden for life - check it out, be part of the project, and help your local farmer out.
It's scheming, planning and assessing time for farmers once the hard freeze comes, as it did on 9 December. Your humble Urban Farmers haven't been totally idle during these shortest of days: I got a darn good idea. I've spent the last few weeks fleshing it all out and securing the necessary support from the other farmers to make it happen. The SE Seedbank Project will involve folks in ways that go way beyond keg parties w/ the 2010 Perpetual Seed Kit. This came out of an idea of Calliope's called the Neighbourhood Foodshed Alliance, where we go even further to reduce travel distance for food by connecting folks w/ their neighbourhood farmer.
But, that's neither here nor there! So....
On Wednesday, Dec. 30th, at 9 a.m., transit activists, anti-oil war activists, clean air advocates, anti-global warming organizers, and others, are picketing (bring you own picket signs, but we will have some, as well!) Portland Business Alliance over PBA's ongoing push to cut and gut TriMet's Fareless Square.
So far, only Lynn Lehrbach, on the TriMet board, has voted with the 1,400 transit riders who turned in petitions against cutting Fareless Square, to the unelected TriMet board, to save Fareless Square and fight other transit service cuts (TriMet is cutting both bus and MAX service, even as they keep building more light rail and streetcar lines, prioritizing capital projects from Obama stimulus money over providing bus service to workers, unemployed, students, seniors and the poor).
Just say no to TriMet and PBA's war on the poor -- Save Fareless Square!
"Walking On Water: Reading, Writing and Revolution" inspired me to share Derrick Jensen's take on education (and seduction).
We'll be reading a couple or few chapters every week...
My hope is for these gatherings to couple authors and editors, to join friends in exploration of creative expression. As Derrick describes the role of a teacher "to praise [students] into becoming who they are, But if I see someone misusing power to harm someone else, it's just as much my responsibility to stop them, using whatever means necessary." Everyone benefits when converging to share (un)common interests and skills, so I hope you'll show up too.
Every Saturday night, even the night after giftmas day (bring that junk from the in-laws you would not ever imagine wanting and let's do a white elephant gift exchange!), at 7pm.
This weekly event will be held at the People's Co-op upstairs in the community room. If possible bring your own writing materials, if not please still come. Donations to help cover the rent are welcomed.
On 12.17.09 I stopped at the weekly protest for the arrest or Impeachment for Judge ByBee. This vigil is held in Portland in front of the federal court where ByBee is one of the judges who sits on the Ninth Court of Appeals. [This is] An interview with The Lone Vet outside the Ninth Circuit Court. He describes what the protest is and talks a bit about the spirit of doing goodwill to all men and peace on earth. In this video clip the Lone Vet explains what the protest is and why there is a group standing in public demanding accountability, the reward for ByBee's arrest and more.
Judge ByBee thinks torture and pain inflicting abuses done to prisoners in US custody is fine. So each week at noon a handful of individuals for justice stand in public, in front of a court he sits on, to bring attention to the Torture memo writing Judge. The group is also sponsoring a 3,000 dollar reward for the arrest of this judge, paid for in pledged donations.
This ongoing protest (outside of the ninth circuit courthouse) continues with a slight 2 week break for the holidays.

In a massive blow to fascist organizing, hackers are in the process of formatting data taken from 11 neo-Nazi message boards, including private messages, email addresses, and passwords. Neo-Nazi's ability to propagandize and recruit is always hindered when examined with a critical lens, because their ideological arguments simply do not stand up on their own.
Antifascist hackers have released information from the websites of the following neo-Nazi groups and projects: Volksfront International--a white power skinhead crew founded in here in Portland, Aryan Front, Blood and Honour, the Creativity Movement, East Coast White Unity, the ENationionalist forum, Final Stand Records, Hammerskin Nation--whose 20th anniversary festival slated to happen in the Willamette Valley in October of 2007 was shut down by the Ad-Hoc Coalition Against Racism and Fascism, NorthEast White Pride, and the White Revolution Forum.
Tech-savvy antifascists are in the process of formatting the data to make it more easily accessible, and WikiLeaks has requested help with this project. For any of you Indymedia readers interested in opposing white supremacist organizing, this would be one great way to help. And if you find any information that might be useful, sharing it with Portland's chapter of the Anti-Racist Action Network (Rose City Antifa) might be a place to start. They have both a voicemail--971.533.7832--and an email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Klamath Justice Coalition organized a blockade in northern California this week, to stop a U.S. Forest Service logging contractor from damaging any sites held sacred by the Indigenous Karuk Nation.
Before daybreak on December 16, members of the indigenous-led Coalition gathered at Orleans Mountain Lookout Road within the Six Rivers National Forest and set up a large fire in the roadway.
Fortunately, the logging crew took the moral and legally responsible path and turned back without involving the police.
"This morning's small but important victory marks the beginning of our campaign to defend Karuk sacred sites and protect the health of our forests," says Karuk Ceremonial Leader Leaf Hillman, in a Press Release issued after the protest.
In the wake of the failure of the governments of the world to come any substantial consensus on what to do about climate change, and in view of their failure to even discuss real solutions to climate change, members of Eugene's Black Tea Society staged a solidarity action in the form of a banner drop. The COP15 talks only served to reaffirm what many of us in the climate justice movement already knew: that the so-called "leaders" of the world have no intention of rising above petty national bickering to solve the most urgent crisis of our time. In the face of government collaboration and inaction it is the responsibility of every human to rise to the defence of mother earth. We are but the crest of a rising tide of popular discontent which will sweep away the old order, replacing it with one based in mutual aid, sustainable living, and cooperative economics. Our survival depends on it.
Marla Renn, a member of the Olympic Resistance Network (ORN), was travelling to Portland, Oregon to speak on the negative impacts of the 2010 Games. Renn was scheduled to speak at educational events at Mt. Hood Community College, Reed College, Portland State University, and the Red and Black Cafe. She was held for over six hours as both Canadian and US border guards interrogated her about the subject of her speech, her contacts in Portland, and her political activities. She was previously denied entry for a Seattle speaking event on the grounds that ten anti-Olympic shirts were unauthorised commercial merchandise, but the shirts were found after she had already been questioned on political issues. Likewise, the excuse for rejecting her this time (lack of employment since her graduation in August) was brought up after her planned speech and political activities were addressed by border guards.
I filmed a 5 minute interview about the "PDX Undeclared Emergency" regarding women being safe on the streets when they are houseless. The Right 2 Survive campaign informed me on some recent bad news regarding homeless women being raped in the Portland area. Lately there have been some rapes in the homeless community in and around NE Portland. The Right 2 Survive is concerned and is activly doing something about it.
The activists have been organizing foot patrols and handing out whistles to women who are sleeping outside to use in the event that they are being abused or attacked. If you hear a whistle blowing go towards it and see / help / etc.... The Right 2 Survive group is asking for community solidarity in offering protection to folks (women) who are without any source of security to be free from rape and abuse while they just try to get through the night. The Right 2 Survive activists are not only seeking protection and organizing whistle handouts and networking on the street level, they are also asking and demanding the city takes a responsible role as well. They are showing up in city offices and working for real changes. They need the greater PDX community's support and their solidarity.
The IRS has stolen 7,100 acres from the Crow Creek Indians; the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has facilitated the land-grab. Tribal leader Brandon Sazue is fasting and occupying the stolen territory with tribal members and supporters. The federales have not yet sent in the army as they did in 1862, resulting in the largest mass execution in US history.
Eco-prisoner Jeff "Free" Luers released from prison
PORTLAND - Dec 16th, 2009 - Jeff "Free" Luers, political prisoner and environmental activist, was released from the Columbia River Correctional Institution this morning after serving nine and half years. Luers was originally sentenced in 2001 to twenty two years and eight months for the politically motivated arson of three SUV's at a car dealership in Eugene, OR. This sentence was deemed grossly disproportionate to the damage sustained by the car dealership and was condemned by legal professionals, human rights groups and activists worldwide. At an appeal hearing in 2007 it was ruled that Luers' original sentence was illegal, and was consequently reduced to ten years.
Medics including two qualified paramedics, two Red Cross cadets and other trained first-aiders from the UK, Norway, Germany and other countries were stopped in a series of incidents in the Christianshavn area. They were searched three or four times each, photographed and held in cages at Valby temporary police station for 6 hours. Arresting units included numbers 702 and 724.
The detention (not full arrest) was under the Danish Police Act, which permits preventative detention of people thought to be 'a danger to public security' or 'likely to cause a public disturbance' (approximate translation). But police told people they had been detained specifically because they were medics, in order to stop them providing first aid at demos.
One group of seven was initially told they would be released after being searched, but the police unit commander then received orders from his superior to detain the group.
