The Red and Black Cafe is now an Official IWW shop!
You all may remember a few months ago when we announced our collective decision to become an IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) closed shop. This meant that all workers at the cafe, current and future, are and would be union members. It was an act of solidarity and an appreciation of our roots, some of which lie within the union. After we were approved by the Portland branch to become an official union shop, the motion then went to the General Executive Board and was approved. So we are now Portland's official (and only) IWW cafe!

Lynne Stewart Sent To Prison
Her indictment was an outrage. So too was her conviction. The fact that this seventy year old veteran civil rights attorney has been sent to prison is a crime itself. She is serving a 28 month sentence although the Court of Appeals has remanded her case back to the original trial court with the hope that her sentence will be lengthened. The Bush Justice Department had sought a 30 year sentence.  http://www.lynnestewart.org/

Dear Straight Anarchists. WTF? A Radical Queer Complaint from Queens of Trailer Trash
Bash Back flier from Pitt On September 24th some of the most militant politicized street protests the States have seen in nearly a decade countered the G20 summit in Pittsburgh. Anarchist Queers and Trannies were on the frontlines of this struggle; bringing the numbers, the flare, and the wrecking crews. Radical Queers fought police and did everything they could, with what they had, not to back down. A days worth of tear gas, rubber bullet attacks, and fending off straight-idiot-liberals, set the tone for what would be a night of ravenous Queer revenge. A single march of 200+ Queers, Trannies, Womyn, POC, and some allies bashed the fuck back; causing the most property destruction contained to a single neighborhood in Pittsburgh during the protests. So other Anarchists, why the fuck are you ignoring us?

Liberty Hall in danger
Explanation of our situation: Hello everyone who values the low cost radical community space Liberty Hall has provided over the last 7 and a half years... It's becoming increasingly likely that the current tenants, the Workers Education Resource Center (basically the IWW and the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee), will not be able to continue our tenancy after either December 31st of this year or January 31st of next year. After the three month remodel is completed WERC "might" be allowed back at an increased rent and with one less office space...

So we are looking at our options; one is to find another space that has both offices for the non-profits and a space big enough to hold the kind of events we've hosted in the past, another is that PCASC and the IWW move in to normal office space and that there simply isn't one of these spaces in Portland anymore, or one more possibly is that if there are enough people interested and dedicated to maintaining a community space at another location (we would not recommend continuing to rent from our landlord) that we/they use the connections and goodwill that Liberty Hall has built up as a springboard for that project.

It's important that we get some input from the thousands of people who have enjoyed events at Liberty Hall over the years, so we're going to try to hold a community forum sometime in November or December... More details as that develops. If you have any ideas or suggestions, particularly available spaces, send them to  libertyhallportland@gmail.com.

Help Save Native Oregon Forests!
Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project Blue Mtns. Biodiversity Project (BMBP) needs your help. The BMBP has been saving native Oregon forests through ground truthing, comments, and legislation for over 18 years. BMBP is opposing the Experiment Forest (EXF) project outside of Bend, OR. The EXF project area is part the Pringle Falls Experimental Forest which is located with the Deschute National Forest; about 25 miles southwest of Bend, OR. The EXF project is a beautiful mature Ponderosa pine forest has not had significant natural or human disturbance since 1865. This forest is unique because of the heavy logged that has taken place outside of Bend for the last century. This is one of the few and rare forests that has been allowed to grow back to its natural and native state.
Right now the Deschutes National Forest is accepting comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). All comments should be in by Monday, November 2nd, 2009.

Please support the "No Action" alternative. We are hoping for as many comments to protect this forest as possible. Please feel free to use the sample comment letter or write one of your own.

All comments should be addressed to:

Push for LNG pipeline from Oregon's Coos Bay
Coos Bay is the frontline in the struggle to protect the west coast from another intrusive corporate energy product, where Jordan Cove, PG&E and other consortium members plan a pipeline with linear clearcuts across Oregon to the CA border near Malin, OR. However, the net results of the investment into this very expensive project is as unstable as the liquified natural gas being imported to OR for the sole purpose of export to CA energy markets.

In the event of a seismic disruption along the coast (see; Cascadia subduction zone, near shore tsunami), the timing of the tanker's arrival could influence whether the destruction is limited to a tidal wave (bad enough by itself) or the combined catastrophe of a tidal wave AND an explosion from the tanker's cooling system's failure and/or rupture and the rapid warming and explosion of the stored LNG.

The Cascadian subduction zone is likely to move at some point in the future, not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN". WHEN this subduction event happens, it will be a destructive force that makes Katrina's time in New Orleans look like tiddlywinks (not an exaggeration.)The "scientists" from FERC who granted approval for the Coos Bay terminal must have missed this little tidbit of knowledge

Update From Local Grand Jury Resister Carrie Feldman
Today I had my first appearance before the federal grand jury in Davenport, Iowa. I was represented by a federal public defender (although he could not be present in the grand jury with me). After reading a brief statement expressing that I would not testify, I was released with a subpoena to reappear before the grand jury again on the 17th of November at 9:00 A.M. It is likely that at this time I will be held in contempt of court for continuing to remain silent, and could face jail time up to the length of the grand jury (it convenes for 12 months total, which leaves 11 remaining after my November appearance). We are still looking into legal questions regarding how long they could hold me.

12 Arrested at Regence Sit-in!
Healthcare activists and their supporters, take over the campus of Regence-Bluecross, in an attempt to meet with their CEO, and have demands heard, but are denied justice, and refused entry.

This is Martha Perez, reporting to you live from SW Portland, where about 50 healthcare advocates are gathered for a non-violent, peaceful sit-in, rally and march around the campus of Regence Bluecross, home to one of the largest healthcare insurers in Oregon state. I am being told the building now is in lock-down, and will remain so, for the time being, in response to this latest action.
