Police have to hand out a business card when they stop you as of Monday 9.28.09
There are a few exceptions, mostly relating to "if a person was asking for a card to distract the officer from a crime or important matter at hand"
Sgt. Scott Westerman, president of the Portland Police Association that represents rank-and-file officers, sergeants, detectives and criminalists, said the union backs the policy. but he also has the following quote:
On the weekend of September 12-13, 2009, Oregon neo-Nazis Dylan Cale Marchand and Daniel Lee Jones organized a white supremacist gathering at private property near Vancouver, Washington. According to internet promotion, the "racialist BBQ and Camp out" featured a speaker who had been involved with George Lincoln Rockwell's original American Nazi Party, and also included "a bonfire, Jew pi?ata and other activities."

This morning, I was late for work. Later, even, than usual. As I drove down the highway, I was distracted and feeling rushed. So I'm not sure how long I had been following it, but it was just as I was about to pass it that I finally saw the huge, dirty, gray truck. I recognized it as soon as I focused on it - the tiny slats in the sides, the shit spattered beneath those slats. The shape and feel and finality of it. Even if I had not seen the "Cattle Drive" logo near the top of the box, I would have recognized the looming sense of loss about it. It was a slaughter truck.
Through the meager air slots I saw, dimly at first, a tangled puzzle of lives and oppression: legs and hooves, the dangling tufts of tails. The bits and pieces of animals, already turned from subjects of their own lives into pieces of machinery, cogs in the grinding wheel, the unwaged slaves on whom our way of life is built. Commodities. Crammed from end to end, this cattle car was haunted inside with shadows. No, not mere shadows, but living beings. Beings with thoughts, dreams, desires, lives of their very own. Not mere means to our ends, but being used so just the same.
I wanted there to be some way to save them.
benefit show for books to prisoners with:
and The Reckless (Seattle).
5 dollar donation at door. All proceeds go to to Portland books to prisoners. Which is an all volunteer run group that relies on community support to continue to send books to incarcerated individuals free of charge. And the ever rising cost of postage is making that much harder to do.
This is an all ages event. Hatred or intolerance of any kind will not be tolerated at this event. No one turned away for lack of funds!

Audio from doctors speaking at the Portland Oregon kick off for the Mad as Hell Doctors Tour, taking the message of Universal Health Care to cities along their way to Washington D.C. They intend to stop in big cities and whistle stops alike, conducting pre-booked local and national Media appearances.
These doctors, from many different areas of Health Care, speak out about the conditions in the medical industry which prompts them to take time out from their lives and seek to educate others about the need for Reform. They speak about the heavy hand of the insurance industry and the prominence of profits over people.

Come support Dan, Sarah, and their 3 yr old daughter Birdy. Dan was involved in a severe bike accident with another cyclist that was drunk. The handlebars crushed his face and shattered every bone. He lost his entire body volume of blood. He will need multiple extensive reconstructive surgeries. This is further complicated by the fact that he has a heart problem and his medication that he needs to live makes him bleed excessively, adding to both his risk under anesthesia and his hospital length of stay.
Dan & Sarah moved from Portland recently to Nebraska in search of work and a career opportunity for Dan. He had just secured his dream job, as Sarah got laid off. Things were looking up and it seemed the move was worth the struggle after all. Then as they were riding their bikes on an evening outing tragedy struck. Fortunately, he has medical benefits but they only cover so much. He did not have any sick/vacation pay. Money will be miserably tight for them over the next several months, possibly years.
So come have a good time and give til it hurts :)

If you're concerned about justice for indigenous nations and peoples here in the pacific northwest and around the world, then come help plan several awareness raising events.
On Thursday, Sep. 10th at 5:30 PM anyone interested in helping to plan several events around these issues should join us at the PSU library.
First thing we want to plan out is starting a weekly film showing and discussion around topics related to indigenism (the political belief that the needs and wants of indigenous peoples and nations must be seriously considered and taken into account by everyone). These films will include documentaries about land rights struggles and recorded discussions by knowledgeable speakers about working for autonomy and restoring traditional lifestyles, for example. Also up for discussion will be the possibility of getting together an event in early January...
Who should come? Anyone who wants to promote justice locally. People need not be indigenous themselves to understand that what's good for indigenous peoples and nations is ultimately good for everyone, and that without justice for first nations there can be no justice at all.
On July 25, 2009, as part of a Global Day of Action With Iran, a rally of solidarity with the Iranian people was held in Pioneer Square in downtown Portland. The event was moderated by Iranian American Goudarz Eghtedari, Ph.D., who after a few brief comments introduced the guest speakers.
Besides the speakers, a Resolution by Sam Adams was read declaring that day an official Portland day of Solidarity with the people of Iran. The video is about 30 minutes in length. Many of the speakers urge Americans to support the Iranian people in their struggle, emphasizing that it is their struggle, and that all we can do is encourage them and emulate their strength and determination. The people accused of (or credited with) defending the Elliott State Forest from logging a few months ago had another day in court today. They are now free to travel out of the state and go on with their lives until their next court date, scheduled for October. Please show your support; their legal team is helping them free of charge, but there are likely to be be some large expenses to come, depending on the outcome of the legal process.
And here is a Democracy Now interview transcript from just after the arrests to help you understand what's going on, in case you hadn't heard:
We will be holding a candlelight vigil to bring attention to the urgent need for healthcare reform with a public option.
Every day people lose their insurance. Many people are excluded coverage because of pre-existing conditions. And many people simply can't afford it. We need reform that will address all these needs now.
We will provide some candles, but it would be great if you could bring your own, too. Please also bring some signs for while we're getting set up (while it's getting dark enough)
SW 3rd & SW Madison -- Terry Schrunk Plaza. Wednesday, 2 Sep 2009, 7:30 PM Directly opposite Senator Wyden's office building.
Once again, the State of Oregon's Department of Fish and Wildlife has lied to the public regarding the killing of Columbia river sea lions. On May 19th of this year, they claimed in a public statement that the trapping and killing had ended for the year. However, on August 24th, they trapped a sea lion on the Oregon coast, in Astoria, more than a hundred miles from Bonneville dam. And they killed him. They claimed he "met the criteria for removal," meaning that he had been "observed eating at least one fish."
At a time when thousands of sea lions are starving to death from Chile to Canada, when the public is struggling to save them, and while NOAA is apparently trying to figure out why they are dying, the ODFW has resumed killing those sea lions who venture into Oregon waters. The irony is compounded when one appreciates that the reason so many sea lions are starving to death is very likely over-fishing.
Monitors are urgently needed to observe the Astoria traps, and to hand out fliers and educate the public about what is happening to these sea lions. If you care about this ecosystem and the animals who share it with us, we need your creativity, your energy, and your passion.

One tree-sitter to descend after week defending people from blasting
PETTRY BOTTOM, W.Va. - After six full days in an 80-foot-tall poplar tree, Nick Stocks will voluntarily come down at 10:00 a.m. today. Since Tuesday morning, Stocks has been living on a platform 30 feet from Massey Energy's Edwight Surface Mine, preventing further blasting over the community of Pettry Bottom. Stocks will turn himself immediately over to the State Police. Fellow tree sitter Laura Steepleton remains in a neighboring tree with no immediate plans to come down.
We are seeking donations of sleeping bags; sleeping pads; rain gear; headlamps, flashlights & batteries; hand held radios and more.
Matt Rossell, after spearheading the successful fight to close down Scamp's, the puppy mill pet store, is now free of bogus criminal charges leveled against him.
An interview with Andrew Flood about the impressions of the North American anarchist movement he formed during his 2007/2008 44 city tour of the US and Canada. The interviews ends with questions about the comparison of the movement in Ireland with that in Britian and the promotion of anarchism via the internet. This was submitted and published in Black Flag.
