We're a group of community members concerned with police accountability and abuse. We "copwatch" by holding discussions on how to interact with the police in addition to going on "patrols" to legally observe the police when they stop people.
Join Lize Mogel and Cara Baldwin for a discussion on the intersection between radical artistic practice, cartography and activism.
Eighty eight years of the day Trotsky directed the suppression of the anarchist uprising in Krondstadt, a group of bandits scaled the walls of his former house in Mexico City during the late hours at night. We broke the lock on his mausoleum and we expropriate the content inside
Hey y'all we cordially invite you to check out any of our upcoming forest defense related events in Eugene Oregon in preparation for the summer...and we'd love to hear from anyone wanting to get involved.
The killing has begun on the Columbia. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has already started killing sea lions on their hit list - animals who have been seen eating even ONE salmon at the Bonneville Dam. They've even claimed the authority to kill animals NOT on their list. Last week, four more beloved friends were put to death behind our backs by callous government agents who believe they can get away with this. Stop the river of blood! We have to keep pressure on, and set the record straight regarding this misguided government plan to kill a protected species in a dubious effort to "save" endangered salmon for fishermen's nets. So we're chartering the 'Cool Bus', a bio-diesel bus with room for 25 activists, and taking a road trip to Salem for a demonstration at the ODFW headquarters. After the one-hour demo, we will head to the Capitol to visit our legislators to ask them to cancel sea lion killing, a plan that fails to address the real problems that plague salmon recovery; overfishing, the dams, and habitat destruction.
RSVP today, as we still have a few seats left on the Cool Bus, and we'd love for you to join us. Save some lives this Thursday.
WHEN: Thursday, April 16, Bus leaves at 10 am
WHERE: Meeting at In Defense of Animals office, NE 18th and Alberta, boarding a bus and driving to Salem.
Bullied by Paramedics on my way home in downtown.
I'm a gay male in my late 20's, and like to go out and have a few with friends on occasion. As I walked back to my place last night (around 1:30 AM) from the China Town District back to SW Downtown (south on 2nd Ave.), I noticed an ambulance vehicle driving behind me in the same direction that I was walking, not unusual. But it was going slow with the sirens off. The two men seated i the vehicle were staring at me. I made a questioning gesture (like a "what do you want? kind of gesture). I wasn't walking funny, and I'm pretty sure that I didn't exhibit any signs of being injured. So really, what was it? At this point I crossed the street, and the guys in the ambulance changed lanes and pulled up right beside me and rolled down the windows. The driver asked "Do you have a problem?". And I responded with "What do you want?
As Wall St. corporations grew bigger and bigger until they were "too big to fail," they also became so politically powerful that they led to distorted and unfair policies that served companies, not citizens.
To stop the banks, Americans are planning forceful, creative actions all over the country for April 11. We'll make our voices resound in those closed-door meetings with the bankers. Spread the word!
JOIN THE ACTION IN PORTLAND SATURDAY APRIL 11, 2009 (4/11) IN PIONEER SQUARE (715 SW Morrison St, Portland, Oregon)
Come to Pioneer Square 10am Saturday April 11th to help defend the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal!
Patrick Ryan will be speaking tonight at 6:30pm on KBOO to speak on Mumia's court case.
Today, the US Supreme Court rejected Mumia Abu-Jamal's appeal for a new guilt-phase trial. The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether to consider the Philadelphia DA's separate appeal, which is attempting to execute Abu-Jamal WITHOUT a new sentencing hearing.
In response to today's rejection, Abu-Jamal's lead attorney Robert R. Bryan will be filing a "petition for re-hearing" at the US Supreme Court.
Hello, I have been summoned for jury duty, I have been informed by the summons that I need to respond to the Multnomah county court by filling out a form letter they have sent to me. I have also included the letter below.
I have three issues I feel, I need to inform the court of that could influence my decision in any trial I may be chosen for:
Hey everybody. If you are among the many people who are opposed to the idea of a $4billion, 12-lane freeway expansion project in North Portland for the benefit of Vancouver, please take a few minutes to copy and paste this letter
For centuries the means of production have been owned by only a few individuals. This has led to spectacular robberies like are apparent at the present time, but also to a quiet, ignored theft of the real value of labor.
To give a logical answer as to why laboring people are not paid nearly the real value of their labor, I need to go back in history and give a basic scientific explanation of the situation.
Come celebrate mayday as it was meant to be enjoyed. A celebration of fun and leisure where it can be found in capitalistic society. You're taking the day off work anyway, and we can still get you to the rally and march on time. 12 noon, May 1st, Colonel Summers Park (20th Ave and Belmont St)
Thanks to the monumental efforts of animal advocates, two of the six sea lions trapped last week have survived. It seems the State did not have the nerve to kill Sanctuary Sam, after advocates named him for the NOAA mascott. I guess NOAA decided that it might be bad for their image to authorize the execution of their own mascott.
Willy, another sea lion whose life was in the balance last week, has also been spared due to the willingness of sea lion advocates to fight tooth and nail for him. Willy is a sea lion whose flesh bears the scars of his branding - C657. Last week, ODFW officials mistakenly believed they had the authority to kill Willy. However, SLD bridadiers pointed out to them that C657, Willy, is not actually on their hit list, and therefore they do not have the authority to kill him. Chagrinned by the news that animal advocates are keeping a closer eye on these sea lions than they are, the ODFW refused to acknowledge the error and instead claimed that he was a completely different animal, B127.

Communicating to those personally responsible for trashing our forests, poisoning our citizens, fouling our drinking water, and killing our salmon is a tactic often forgotten in grassroots advocacy to protect our priceless forests. But folksinger Utah Phillips spoke the truth when he said: "The earth is not dying, it is being killed, and those who are killing it have names and addresses."
I'm writing to inform you that as of March 2009, Eco-Advocates (aka: Cascadia's Ecosystem Advocates) has officially relaunched the Boycott of Umpqua Bank or Stumpqua (stumpquabank.com) to send a strong message to bank Chairman/timber baron Allyn Ford (owner of Roseburg Forest Products) to replace his obsolete deforestry practices of toxic clearcutting and taxpayer-subsidized public lands logging with responsible and ethical forestry practices on his own land.
The Stumpqua Bank Boycott gives average citizens the power to apply direct pressure to an individual personally responsible (Ford is SOLE OWNER of Roseburg Forest Products) for poisoning our children, trashing our forests, and spoiling our drinking water. A letter or phone call only means so much to a greedy timber baron. But if you put your money where your mouth is and withdraw your accounts from Ford's precious Umpqua Bank -- whether it's $100 or $100 million -- you can rest assured he'll sit up and take notice.
Only a week ago, sea lion defenders named him Sanctuary Sam. ( http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2009/03/388722.shtml.) Before that, the public knew him, if they knew him at all, as just a number. C586. But some of us knew him better.
Sam has been present on the Columbia for several years, at least. I've watched him thrill tourists in Astoria with his powerful voice and his friendly manner. He routinely sits on the dock there, with his head leaned back in the classic "circus seal" pose, basking in the sun. But when people call out to him, he cocks his head to the side, opens his huge eyes, and looks at them curiously. If they continue to talk to him, he eventually opens his mouth and barks chattily back. He's always been extremely gregarious that way.
I've also seen this guy swirling through the waters near St Helens, often happily laying on his back with his flippers in the air, talking to anyone who will listen. Many of us on the river know him. He belongs out here. And he deserves to live a free and wild life, as do all of the Columbia river sea lions.
If this neighbor of ours is executed by the State, I do not think I can ever forgive the fishermen who clog the waterways and kill all the salmon, whose voices have called for this to happen.
In the next few months, the US military intends to send 17,000 new soldiers to Afghanistan. This will increase by one half the size of their hugely unpopular occupation. Vice President Joe Biden himself has gone on the record to say he expects an "uptick" in American deaths in Afghanistan. The CIA and US military have begun bombing civilians in, and even sending in ground troops into, Pakistan, to much popular opposition from the Pakistani people. The current administration is already preparing to escalate and spread military campaign further into Pakistan. In the meantime, while Obama talks about removing "combat troops" from Iraq, there is no intention to end the occupation of Iraq by dismantling the US military bases. Only approximately half of the US soldiers in Iraq will be removed under this plan, because the rest are not considered "combat troops."
We intend to SHUT DOWN the War Machine, to do everything we can to stop the surge from leaving the United States. To this end, we are calling for a day of coordinated, non-violent civil disobedience and direct action to blockade the GDLS facility in Auburn.
Please attend an information meeting in Olympia, WA, on April 5th 2009 at 1 PM to discuss this plan, our strategy, and building a strong movement to end these wars and occupations. The meeting will be at Capitol Theater Offices: 416 Washington St. (Between 4th and State, Next to the Painted Plate). Room 208 on the 2nd Floor.
End BOTH Occupations - Foreclose the War Machine - Direct Action to Stop the Surge - No administration will end these wars - We, the people, need to end them.
Greetings, Comrades! This is the fourth intentional communication from the Booking Committee at the Red and Black Café! After a long, hectic March full of schizophrenic weather, we approach April with some weariness. There are still some fantastic things happening, though, so please check out the full list of events and come out!
A Vietnam vet arrested for walking on the sidewalk at the Mittleman AIPAC demonstration by cop who obviously slept through h.s. history class when they were covering the Constitution—especially the First Amendment. And the Mittleman folks who evidently slept through that presentation also.
There I was among some good folks having fun and making a point to the people going into the AIPAC meeting. I was thinking about going home on the bus and wanted to say goodbye to some friends when I was told that I could not cross a driveway that ran on the sidewalk into the street. I told the cop that they could not do that unless I was blocking traffic. I went to go across and was pushed back by a cop and then I tried again and was arrested. The officer who arrested me was angry about something because this was the roughest I've been handled thus far. I was hooked up to little earl (oxygen bottle on wheels) and still got arrested. I was not planning this and was disappointed that I could not talk the police out of an order that was unconstitutional.
