Reportback from the Sam Adams Rally
another sign Last night, 200+ people showed up at Portland City Hall, starting around 5:30 pm to show their support for the recently elected mayor Sam Adams who is now the subject of a gay witch hunt.

People brought their signs, support and voices as they gathered en-masse in front of City Hall. Most signs read something such as, "We Still Support Sam" and "Apology Accepted." Others reflected this reporter's sentiments with "Transportation is an issue. Homelessness is an issue. The economy is an issue. And all you want to talk about is SEX? Go F*ck Yourselves!"

Sat Jan 31 -Town Hall on the Economic Crisis
You are invited to a Town Hall on the Economic Crisis

First Unitarian Church, SW 12th and Main
Saturday, January 31, 1-5 pm

While almost $2.5 trillion of our money was squandered on easy term loans to banks and investment houses, we lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008! One million jobs were lost just between Nov. 1st and Dec. 31st of 2008. With a good deal more suffering likely, we are in the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression.

* What are the root causes of the economic crisis?
* What should we fight for? What is a "recovery?"
* How do the millions of people who voted for change help make it happen?

Donations welcome -- Sponsored by Jobs with Justice, the Economic Justice Action Group of the First Unitarian Church, and over 45 unions, community organizations, churches, and other groups.

FBI Announces Sighting of Fugitive in BC
The Oregonian and other corporate media published articles yesterday announcing a sighting of Rebecca Rubin, fugitive in the Northwest "Green Scare" cases, who is indicted for Arson and other charges related to actions at Vail Ski Resort, a Susanville, CA wild horse corral, and other actions.

The articles are reprinted nearly verbatim from an FBI press release, and beg the question, "Why would they show their hand?" Logically, it would seem that letting Rebecca know she had been sighted (via the media) would only give her an advantage.

It is my opinion that the intention of this release is a calculated attempt to stir chatter to assist in the hunt for Rebecca and other fugitives. Have no doubt that they are listening in on the phone conversations and email accounts of anyone they suspect of having a connection to Rebecca.

This may seem obvious to some, but warrants pointing out.

gaza protest artcle and pictures 1.17.09
many protest israel, despite cold weather[:] the blisteringly cold weather did not stop several hundred protestors from gathering at pioneer square to oppose israel's unjust and illegal bombing of everyone and anything in gaza. the now usual two cops in bright yellow-green jackets stood on a corner looking extremely bored and unuseful, there were no counterprotestors, and the crowd was peaceful. amidst honks of support from passing cars at the rate of one every minute or less, the predominently young crowd (many under eighteen) of arabic descent gave interviews, sang songs, chanted defiantly, and posed for pictures on the day that, far away, israel announced its cease fire.

Olympia, WA: Torch Lit March Against Police
Olyimpia antipolice march Upwards of 45 people gathered across the street from the celebration of the re-opening of the Timberland Library to discuss what to do about the recent murders committed by police and how we can better show solidarity with the rebels in Greece and Oakland.

Those in the crowd looked around, reassured each other and then surged toward the police station, pelting it with stones and torches and then dispersed into the surrounding neighborhood.

3 people were arrested, 10 detained. One of the arrested was stopped with a loaded handgun pointing at his face. The 3 were later released on bail and had received misdemeanor charges. As for the people who ditched their bikes to get away, the police took them for "evidence" and they will most likely not be returned.

Ungar Fur's Demo Wrap Up. 1/16/09
The demonstration started at 1 pm as always. The weather was on our side today, providing lots of sun and lots of people walking around SW portland. Throughout the day we had a lot of passing pedestrians stop and ask about why we were outside of Ungar Fur's (SW 12th and Yamhill). We would then give them literature about the fur industry and let them know about how many animals in the fur trade have their necks broken, have their skulls stomped on, and eventually, have their skin ripped off while they are still conscious and breathing. This disgusted the curious citizens of portland. Some of them even went in to tell Ungar Fur's what they thought about their business.

We are here to let the public know about how cruel and inhumane the fur industry is. we are also here to let Ungar Fur's know that we will never back down, until they stop the killing.

EVERY FUCKING FRIDAY. 1 pm. SW 12th & Yamhill.

LNG Opponents Will Challenge FERC Decision in Federal Court
Astoria, OR - Two days after staging a massive rally against LNG in Oregon, opponents of the Bradwood LNG terminal vowed to challenge FERC in federal court after the commission rejected their request for reconsideration of the terminal's approval.

Without discussion, the five-member commission dismissed challenges from the states of Oregon and Washington, as well as Columbia River Treaty Tribes and Columbia Riverkeeper.

Brett VandenHeuvel, executive director of Columbia Riverkeeper, blasted FERC's decision, "FERC's decision is clearly illegal and we will challenge it in federal court. Not only Riverkeeper and allies, but also the states of Oregon and Washington, and the Columbia River tribes all warned FERC that we would fight its illegal approval. I expect we will succeed on appeal."
