Republicans Complicit in Trillion Dollar Theft
Republicans Complicit in Trillion Dollar Theft
author: David Roknich
George W. Bush can't run for re-election, but he doesn't have to remain president to retain control of the wealth and power of the entire US government. With full complicity of every single Republican member of the US Senate, he's it taking with him. This year, congress didn't delay in getting their dirty work done in short order, because most will run for re-election, and they're counting on the fact that by November, the usual collective amnesia will set in.

Don't let them get off easy this year: if they can't be properly punished for the crimes they've committed the least you can do is vote them out of office.

Separation - A letter to the Christian Church
Since it is a fact, that is not often acknowledged or discussed, that the wave of destruction washing over America, and from there over the rest of the planet, has as one of its root causes the activities of the American Church, it seems to me that it is long overdue that the American Church start showing some responsibility and begin doing something to make up for the damage caused by the church.

Interview with Director of "Independent Intervention"
This is an interview I had the pleasure of conducting with Tonje Hessen Shei, Director and Producer of "Independent Intervention", a new film about independent media and corporate media.

"...since I came to this country from Norway, I've become frustrated and surprised with how journalism started to fuse a lot with PR, and journalism was really tailored for markets...as we studied the media we were always talking about the impending media crisis. In 1993 there were about 50 major media corporations, right now its like 5;

And then there was the day of the US invasion of Iraq. I was 8 months pregnant basically, running around with a camera and a huge belly and there was just so many people out there, so much going on. I started a huge library of media coverage of the buildup to the war and the justifications for the war. I was so shocked and frustrated with how they covered the war. But it was interesting, what I chose to take out to send to my editor in New York is one thing, but he hadn't gotten most of my footage before because he doesn't have cable and he was blown away. Seeing his reaction and his interpretation of the selections I sent to him was incredible part of this film and of how our relationship developed with this film, as director and editor. "

Heroes Hard at Work
he Portland Police are hard-working modern-day heroes that keep our cities safe from menacing thugs, like the kind that stand in doorways and use cellular phones.

Last night at approximately 10:45 pm I had the good fortune of witnessing the Portland Police violently apprehend a dangerous criminal on SW Washington.

The police were concerned that there may have been underage drinking taking place at a private party downtown. The young man who was working the door, checking IDs, was told by police that he needed to let them in. The young man said that he had specific instructions not to, and that they needed a warrant to enter the property. The man pulled out his cell phone and called someone inside to notify them that the police were demanding entrance.

This was apparently a threat to society, or at least the people in the immediate area, because the police then grabbed the man's arm, twisting it until he dropped his phone, ganged up on him and arrested him, slamming his head on the concrete in the process.

Schumacher Furs demo, Thursday April 6
Victim of the fur industry A half dozen of us had a demonstration this Thursday in front of Schumacher Furs. We passed out literature and held signs. Lots of passersby thanked us for being there, and a couple people said they'd come to the Saturday protests. A few angry people came up to us and expressed their support for the fur industry, saying plainly that they don't care about what happens to the animals in the fur trade. Unfortunately, one of those people referred to the Schumachers as her "friends" and seemed to be connected to a Willamette Week reporter, so we can only guess what the upcoming coverage will be like from that paper.

Maria Cantwell/Joe Biden Fundraiser Protest in Vancouver WA
About 90 to 100 people gathered in front of Vancouver Hilton, where a fundraising reception was being held for Senators Maria Cantwell and Joe Biden. The demonstration, which was put on by three local grassroots organizations, was an effort to urge the Senators to support Sen. Russ Feingold's resolution to censure President Bush over illegal wiretapping of US citizens, as well as to urge them to stop the occupation of Iraq. The groups represented were Vancouver for Peace, Democracy for Vancouver, Veterans for Peace and the newly formed Code Pink Vancouver. Overall turnout and spirits were high, despite the rain. Nearly all reactions from passing motorists were positive, many honked and waved and some stopped to voice their support. Many attendees to the fundraiser had to walk through the protest lines and some engaged the vocal protesters pleasantly. Sen. Craig Pridemore made a point to walk through the entire crowd, often pausing to talk to a familiar person or listen to someone's spiel, before going into the event. One agitated fundraiser attendee angrily stalked the crowd looking for the person responsible for placing a code pink flyer (a brilliant mock receipt of the cost of the war) on his windshield. When no-one would take it from him, he attempted to hang it on the camera lens of an unwitting Columbian photographer, which didn't make him too happy.

Ecoterrorist Headquarters Found in Denver
Beneath the cold, Orwellian façade of Newmont Mining Corporation's headquarters in downtown Denver's "cash register" building, a dauntless group of veteran anti-globalization activists held a press conference to announce the Stop Newmont Mining Coalition's plan to take to the streets on April 25, 2006 to forcefully confront greedy gold digger Newmont at its annual shareholders meeting. Issuing an open invitation to everyone in Denver and across the country to join them, the Coalition made clear its intent to effectively put an end to the ecoterrorist mining corporation's genocidal anonymity and impunity once and for all. Part of an oceanic swell of resistance from every continent where this toxic monster operates, the multicultural alliance will be joined by community members from Ghana, Peru, Indonesia, Mexico, and Western Shoshone territory, all places where Newmont's toxic dumping has destroyed the lives and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples, and all places where its destructive practices have led to forceful, unrelenting resistance.

Olympia runs baby nazi's out of town!!
The call for support went out less than 48 hours before the event took place that people were going to meet in Sylvester park at 11 am to begin our counter demonstration. Many people began showing up at that time (some were late due to the time change). There was a small group of dedicated individuals combing the city on bikes/foot/car looking for the nazi's from about 11am until their first sighting at 12:25 pm. The group that was holding our position in Sylvester Park received a cellular communiqué at 12:25 informing them that there was a NSM members sighted at the Capitol Campus. At this time the bike brigade was informed and they deployed rapidly to the campus, upon arrival they noticed that indeed there were 5 NSM members (including the Seattle unit head Justin Boyer and the Northwest leader/webmaster Jim Ramm) dressed in full SS uniforms standing around confronting a small group of anti-racist activists. We started calling down to the groups at Sylvester and Heritage parks to confirm that yes they were indeed there. At about 12:35 two (or maybe three) more particularly aggressive NSM members pushed themselves through the crowd and joined their cohorts.

A Nation of Colonists ... and Race Laws: The Politics of Immigration
The original Europeans in what is now the US were not immigrants, but colonists. And the US is not a nation of immigrants - it is a white colonial settler state, like South Africa under Apartheid, the former Rhodesia, Australia and Israel.

And like those states the US has always operated on a sometimes hidden, sometimes overt system of Apartheid. Like those places, the US is a nation of colonists and race laws.

It is a place where white colonists arrived, seized the land, and dispossessed, exterminated or attempted to exclude the original "non-white" peoples all of them.

Haunsperger strikes again
I was biking home from work and, having not been downtown in quite a while, I ended up on Pine and then on 5th, the bus mall. I biked in the car lane, trying to figure out my escape route. A bus was on my right in the bus lane and I'd noticed an unmarked police cruiser sitting right by the driveway into Big Pink's parking lot. While I'm riding slowly, behind a bus, the cop flies up behind me, lights on, just as I get to Oak. Not knowing what's happening, I turn right in the crosswalk onto the sidewalk and disembark. When he got out, he gave me the ticket and said he'd cited me for an illegal right turn and riding in the bus lane- neither of which was true when he'd turned on his lights. I'd panicked and looked to get out of his way, and as a result, got a $600 ticket.

Marines Patrol Streets in Toledo Ohio
Twice in the last month 20-30 marine reservists, fully attired in camo, and armed to the teeth with semi-automatic machine guns patrolled the streets of downtown Toledo, OH for an entire weekend. The Blade said they were authorized to fire live blanks at innocent civilians. I first noticed them outside the window of the school where I teach...they walked within feet of a bus stop where two schools worth of students stood confused, scared, and horrified. I took the following photo from my 4th floor window...

Schumachers Present Rambling Diatribe Before City Council Today
Delivering the message on a This morning, Linda and Greg Schumacher, along with their security guard, their accountant, and a friend from Zell Brothers jewelry store (located across the street from Schumachers) all railed against what Greg called "domestic terrorists." To bolster their case, they brought along a sheaf of email correspondence and copies of various Oregon Revised Statutes, which they claim show that the city needs to start arresting people for demonstrating in front of their fur store.

Report: Spontaneous Schumacher's Demonstration

After the city commission meeeting, a small but vigorous group of demonstrators reminded Schumacher's of the power of free speech. Onlookers smiled and gave thumbs up, and the media showed unusual interest. We had the good fortune of making a new acquaintance. One pedestrian stopped and told us that he used to be an "evil man." He worked for the fur industry for some 25 years, and was eager to share some unknown truths from inside the industry. We should be hearing more from him, as he offered to speak before audiences and make a video with IDA.

Schumacher Furs -- Portland City Council Meeting

In this morning's KPTV broadcast, reporter Jim Hyde spent more time ogling through a deserted fur shop following along as Greg Schumacher lifted staggeringly awful coat after staggeringly awful coat from the racks. (I don't just mean awful in that animals died for those coats, I also mean gross in the sense of fashion disaster. One of the coats was a shockingly awful pink affair. Another, garish red with poofy things hanging on it. You can't buy taste, can you.)

Schumacher Furs Protest Report (the Year of the Dog), April 1
About 50 protesters (ranging in age from 7 months to 80 years) showed up throughout the day Saturday to leaflet, hold signs, make sidewalk art, and chant against the fur industry's abuse of animals. It was a great day with new people, lots of enthusiasm, and lots of support from passersby. Many people thanked us for being there while others honked and waved as they drove past. The Oregonian, The Portland Tribune, and Channel 2 news showed up as well.

A few dismal manikins wearing dead animals stared blankly out from the glass display case windows, while the Schumacher folks, some also wearing dead animals, stared blankly out from behind the big glass doors (in actuality they're seething inside, evidenced by their public announcements and numerous threats to protesters). A cluster of police stood across the street, and police cars drove by periodically, but all was calm. A few people posing as customers went in - from appearances we doubt they were there to buy fur but instead to support the Schumachers amidst growing controversy - but there wasn't really much activity for Schumacher Furs.

Reportback: Tuesday Evening At The Recruitment Center
Tonight I went to the Military Recruiting Center up on 1317 NE Broadway. Every Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:30 a small handful of dedicated people stand outside the Recruiting Center with anti-war signs and hand out literature to passersby. They have been doing this weekly for many months now. Catholic Workers, and at least one Veteran For Peace, they stand as a counterpoint to the military machines recruitment center. They stand for truth, while recruiters use deception and lies to lure in young people as fodder for wars of aggression.

Berlin 9-11 Report Back
In one photo Nazi legislators caucus. How I wish it were just the Nazis that... When asked if I would continue to post photo essays here on indymedia during my extended travels through Europe, I replied that I doubted that I would have anything to post. However, on my first night in Berlin (my first stop) the contrast between the way Americans and Germans look at their recent past startled me so that I knew that I had to produce this photo essay. Some readers (on sites other than indymedia) may get upset by my insistence on presenting my images in a political or historical context. However, for me, all photography that is not for personal use is about political struggle or it's about surrender. Eugene youngster faces "arson" charge in Oklahoma
Josh's arraignment was today in Oklahoma, and per the advice of the COURT APPOINTED INTAKE OFFICER, we were under the impression that he did not have to be present. This was bullshit, and complete entrapment. They issued a warrant for Josh's arrest, and the judge said that there was no reason he should be living with his sister. He is leaving tomorrow, Wednesday, to turn himself in and go to jail. We don't know what will happen now, it is likely they will keep him in custody until his pretrial and trial, as they will assume he is a flight risk since he was not present for his arraignment. THEY ARE TAKING AWAY MY BROTHER. WE NEED HELP. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR AN ATTORNEY. ORGANIZE!!! SOLIDARITY! PLEASE HELP MY BROTHER!
