On Sunday, July 3 a learning group will meet to begin a study of human and plant relationships. By way of plant knowledge we will begin to percieve the radical idea that humans are not separate from plants and in fact what has been lost from the "spirit" of man by industrializing us, can be found in plants. Our healing, our well being and our planet are stored in plants.
We will use three books to look at the language of plants, perception and Pacific Northwest plant communities. We will at first have a class coordinator, then the whole learning group will begin to teach each other using our unique perceptions.
Sometimes we will meet in buildings to discuss the books we are studying. Sometimes we will meet in natural areas so that plants are part of our classroom. Sometimes we will speak, sometimes we will listen, sometimes we will draw, sometimes we will observe.
So we were detained today at Victoria Station in London by the London Police as we tried to get on our bus. 2 cops stopped us and ran passports, claiming they needed to check our immigration status and make sure we weren't planning trouble in Scotland. They gave the usual story about how they have the right to "keep people safe", as though we we're en route to some gathering of how to rip off poor people (which we are, except that we are protesting it, not participating in it, like a few people I could mention).
As our ID's were checked, we noticed 3 other cops approaching us, one with a large camera. Turns out these are the same bored and underpaid men that stole Evan's notebook yesterday and detained everyone they could leaving the Institute of Autonomy (a pre-Scotland convergence center in London). The cops literally stole the notebook through physical assault from the person who was holding it and used the itinerary inside of it to find us at our bus.
So 2 of us we're cleared but Evan and Mark were questioned about our travels here and Evan had to fill some shit out to try to get his stolen notebook back from the cops. There has been a lot of photographing of us and others and intelligence gathering going on in the last few days and we anticipate more of these fear-tactics as we approach Scotland.
Friday marks the beginning of a week and a half of forest defense activities around Oregon and just outside Portland on Mount Hood National Forest. Today Back to the WALL plans a protest and action in Southern Oregon at the Biscuit Timber Sale. Anticipating the protest, the closure imposed earlier this year in the Illinois Valley has been granted a one month extension by the Forest Service's timber stooges, in a blatent effort to stifle dissent. This 12+ miles closure of a public road accessing the Kalmiopsis wilderness and many other popular recreation areas was put in place following acts of non-violent civil disobedience (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) and other protests. Calls to the Forest Service supervisors are desperately needed.
Friday night in Portland at 7 pm at the Redwing Cafe(1700 S.E. 6th) an Earth First! history event will be held, focusing on the life and work of famed redwoods defender, labor organizer, and COINTELPRO survivor Judi Bari complete with music, speakers and a new film. On Saturday there will be a hike to Bear, an old growth forest on Mount Hood which was just cut this month - the logs have yet to be removed. All this is leading up to the National Earth First! Rendezvous which begins Monday the 4th with a celebration of Cascadian independence from the US.
The article Why Did the Trade Center Skyscrapers Collapse? published on the libertarian-oriented website LewRockwell.com, has garnered considerable attention. It makes the case for the controlled demolition of the Twin Towers and Building 7 with much the same eloquence as David Ray Griffin, whom it cites. Its author, Morgan Reynolds, brings unprecedented credentials to the community of skeptics of the official story: He is professor emeritus at Texas A&M University, former director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis, and former chief economist for the US Labor Department during 2001-2002.
Reynolds provides an excellent summary of evidence for the controlled demolition of the WTC skyscrapers. However, he also devotes about a third of his article to supporting the dubious idea that neither the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, nor the field in Shanksville, PA were the sites of the crashes of the jetliners commandeered on 9/11/01. His article thus weds the thesis of controlled demolition of the skyscrapers with the denial that Flights 11, 175, 77, and 93 crashed where reported. This is unfortunate because it functions to discredit the case for demolition by associating it with ideas that lack scientific merit, are easily debunked, and are inherently offensive to the victims of the attack -- especially the survivors of the passengers and crews of the crashed flights.

So, I use my VCR to do my morning yoga...but when I turn it off, the TV comes on. This morning it was on a morning cartoon show (Sabrina, the teenage witch). Then this commercial comes on showing a little girl sitting at a table eating her breakfast and she looks up and asks her mother if she should go to grandma's house if there is a terrorist attack and she (mom) is not around. Then a voice of authority comes on and big words come across the screen, "Do you have a plan in case of a terrorist attack, talk to your children".
In spite of an unsurprising acquittal by a mostly white jury today, Scott McCollister knows in his dark, toxic heart that he is GUILTY. He shot and killed an unarmed, 90 lb woman to death, on the streets of Portland, after stopping her car because a black person was driving. He lied to a grand jury, and then to this jury. And star-crazed idiots from the suburbs let him off the hook. The rest of us, however, do not.
Day one of Tre's extradition hearing was full of surprises. First, every supporter, journalist and lawyer who attended was subjected to unprecedented security measures, including two sets of metal detectors and X-rays of all bags and purses. Second, Tre's lawyer, Tim Russell, argued so convincingly against extradition that the government lawyer had to ask for an overnight adjournment so she could attempt to marshal some kind of counter-argument.
After reading an article on this site in which the author shared a letter written to the Oregon Garden regarding the folly of their "forestry exhibit," I decided to write a letter of my own. I, too, had discontinued my membership with the garden after seeing the exhibit in question, and I wrote to tell them about it. Below, you will see how they responded to my concerns, followed by my own reply.
The Senate will start debate on the Interior Appropriations bill tonight or tomorrow. The bill contains a dangerous rider (Title V) that will allow the Forest Service to sell land and facilities that the public currently owns to private entities with virtually no limitations. This public land privatization scheme needs to be stopped!!

Portland's two main sources of toxic waste (The Oregonian & Tribune) have recently been locked into a heated competition to see who can print the most sensational headlines and ignorant stories about meth abuse in our city. Finally fed up, I took the time to debunk the premise of the Tribune's most recent front page story on this subject.
On Sunday, June 12, 2005, approximately 150 people gathered at Sam Bond's Garage (a local pub/restaurant) for a "Night of Solidarity with Political Prisoner Jeff 'Free' Luers." This was the 2nd year of annual international solidarity actions with Jeff, organized in opposition to his cruel and ridiculous 22+ year prison sentence. He has served five years so far for burning three SUVs in protest of pollution and greed.

Day six, Monday, June 27, 2005 brought the last witness for the defense; although this one seemed to support the plaintiff's side. The witness, Terrol White, who was the driver of the car Kendra was shot in on May 5, 2003, appeared by videotape. White is in jail in Spokane and so couldn't come in to testify. He supported all the other witnesses who said that all three officers stood by the open car door on the driver's side and walked along with the car when it started to move. He, like everyone else couldn't understand why 3 officers couldn't pull Kendra from the car. He did not see any officers fall or falling, nor did he see any officers being dragged by the car. Prior to and during the time of the shooting of Kendra by Officer McCollister, White was cuffed in the backseat of the patrol car parked just less than a car length from Kendra's car. He said that when the car moved, the officers were able to move with it, and that the car was jerking as if it was a standard-shift car out of gear rather than an automatic shift.
The plaintiff attorneys (for Kendra James' Estate & family) had two rebuttal witnesses; Dr. Brady and Dr. Grimsbo. Dr. Grimsbo, forensic scientist for over 30 years, conducted a test yesterday afternoon at the scene of the shooting (Skidmore overpass in N. Portland) using the actual car. At the specific location of the initial traffic stop, Dr. Grimsbo put the car in drive with the brake released and the driver's door open. Without giving the car any gas, it travelled over 275 feet (its final resting stop on May 5, 2003) at its idle speed, which was calculated to be 3 miles per hour. Grimsbo did this test with Attorney Bottoms for the plaintiff because the defense witness, Gaylan Warren, claimed that according to Mult. County Sheriff's tests, the car could not have travelled to its final resting stop that day at its idle speed. Warren had claimed that the car would have had to accelerate to at least 8 miles per hour. Grimsbo's test was videotaped and it showed him applying the brakes as the car went past its final resting spot and so refutted Warren's claim big time.
Clackamas County's 2005 Homeless Count indicates that nearly 7,500 people living in the County are homeless, including 2,500 children, a dramatic increase from all prior counts of the County's homeless. [I]n late May the Clackamas County Board of County Commissioners approved a code amendment to prohibit people from sleeping or camping in their car, trailer or other vehicle on a county roadway or highway in residential, commercial or industrial areas. With this amendment, the Sheriff's Office now has the option to cite people under the county code and issue a $15 citation, which will go into effect 90 days from the adoption date. Now, these 7,500 people are not just homeless, they are likely to be cited for violating Clackamas County code.
Last week about 100 Portlanders gathered to voice their disgust with Sen. Ron Wyden's pro-CAFTA vote in a "mock mark-up" vote earlier in June. (A mock mark-up is a non-binding vote that gives the Senate leadership a chance to see where Senators are at on a given issue.) Protesters want Wyden to change his vote and oppose CAFTA when it counts: on the Senate floor. The lives and livelihoods of millions of Central Americans and US-ers lie in the balance.
Call Ron today and tell him: "Change your vote: NO on CAFTA!" 503.326.7525 (Portland) or call toll free 1-866-340-9281 (for Wyden's DC office)
So last night....I caught a garage burglar in the act confronted him. He sucker punched me and when I called 911 to report the assault the dispatcher wasted time with useless instructions and questions. I told her that he was in the neighborhood, on foot, and that quickly dispatching could possibly result in a capture. She wanted me to wait in the house so the cops could come find me. Knowing that describing my non-traditional living arrangements is best done over coffee....I told her that I would be at the corner where I could direct the cops in the direction that the guy ran. She equivocated saying that she had to protect police safety. At that point I gave up and handed the phone over to my girlfriend.
The Northern California 9-11 Truth Alliance launched an art contest asking artists to cast light on how 9-11 truth could lead us towards peace and justice. Entires examine issues that the 9-11 Commission has ignored- including- "Who benefited?" and "Who should be held accountable?"
Artists and musicians cast new light on the shadow of 9/11, the unconscious fears of society, the defining event of the century, the excuse for endless war, the theme of an art contest that asks how the truth of 9/11 could lead society towards peace and justice.
The artists, unlike the official Kean/Zelikow Commission, which found no one responsible for the unprecedented failure of the military to protect American civilians on 9/11, points at those who benefited from 9/11 and could be held accountable for the crime. The artists look beyond the "They hate us for our freedoms." explanation of 9/11 and examine more rational, logical, economic, and psychological motivations for the attack.
Okay, so here is my account of what I did out on the streets of Philadelphia, Tuesday the 21st of June, 2005. This is part one of three.
I woke up around 8:00 a.m. that morning. As I got ready to head out to Food Not Bombs, I found out that it was to be held in front of a major pharmaceutical corporation called GlaxoSmithKline. Food was really the only thing on my mind as I struggled with the bike I had borrowed that day for it wasn't working correctly, but someone could still use it, so I did.
I was out there to cover the events of the day and with the help of the Philadelphia Indymedia folks we broke up into three groups to cover each branch of the three demonstrations. I choose to go to the environmental one and cover that. From GlaxoSmithKline I walked a few blocks over to 1640 (I believe) Arch Street. A truck was waiting with all kinds of signs, giant puppets, and huge banners. Everyone was in really good spirits as everyone was being moved from the truck across the streets onto the sidewalk into a pile.
Part TwoAfter a while things calmed down between police and demonstrators. After about an hour of a rather somber mood things started to pickup like they had been earlier that day with a much more positive feeling all about. People gathered around in a circle in the middle of the street and started to scream really loud, getting the attention of the delegates inside the convention center, more joined them and it got louder. As that was happening people started to form a line facing the police.
Part ThreeI got dropped off and met up with the person who called to let them know that I was there. There were police on both sides of the street. I guess it was the police headquarters, because there were officers on each side of the street. Cars in front of the building, police on bicycles in front of everyone there. There were about fifty people in a small park sitting down eating Food Not Bombs. Bicycles were everywhere between people as they laid around and enjoyed each others company with the purpose of supporting those that had been arrested and put in jail. I was informed that before I arrived things almost got out of hand as an emotional police officer was yelling at the people in the crowd saying, "you killed my friend."

Day five, Friday, June 24, 2005 started with defense witness, Gaylan Warren, a forensic scientist who specializes in reconstructing crime scenes, especially shootings. Warren stated that the physical evidence left behind at the scene - such as Kendra's wig, a silver sugar bowl, matchbook, a Taser "blast door" and shell casing help to show where events took place. He claimed that the evidence suggests that the car travelled approx. 275' from the initial stop, that the taser Officer Reynolds fired was 9 inches away from Kendra's left shoulder (where the probes hit). Like the other expert witnesses, Warren had an opinion about the bullet path and that the shot had to be 30" or beyond that. Warren thought that Scott McCollister's video re-enactment showing his foot inside the car was consistent with that path and distance. He did admit on cross examination, though, that if Kendra had been laying differently from what the defense claims, the bullet path could be consistent with McCollister standing outside the car. Warren stated that based on the fact that the taser probes went through her jacket and red t-shirt, she probably felt the effects of being tasered, but was not completely immobiled.
Ward Churchil spoke at the Mississippi Ballroom last night, 06-23-2005 ostensibly about military recruitment, military action in Iraq and movement(s) against it. He spoke for about an hour and then took questions. This was a decent talk, but I felt like the previous one at Reed College was a little more informative, but this one was more informal and open. Still there are a few good tidbits that Churchil drops here and there. Listen to the stream HERE . Download the file at IndyTorrents .
First witness was Dr. Cliff Nelson who performed the autopsy on Kendra. He basically described the same bullet path as did Dr. Brady yesterday except that he claimed that the video re-enactment by Officer Scott McCollister would be consistent with the path. The video shows McCollister with one foot in the car, knee on edge of driver's seat and upper body leaning into car. His right arm is bent 45 degrees at the elbow, approx. 6 inches from his upper torso. Dr. Nelson stated the bullet path was consistent with this video even though he drew a line from an imagined gun barrel at the end of McCollister's right hand that went up and over where the defense claims Kendra was positioned, and would have exited out the passenger side front window.
Next came Officer Kenneth Reynolds, 28 years old who admitted he is close friends with McCollister. They do dinner every Tuesday nite with their wives and friends. Reynolds story of how he stood next to and slightly behind McCollister did not hold up too well during cross examination by Attorney Grimes for the plaintiff.
