Photos of Edwards Rally in Downtown Portland
Here are a few photos of this evenings visit from John Edwards @ Pioneer Square.I have tried to attend Bush speeches, but I have been denied entry because of lack of tickets or my refusal to sign a loyalty oath.Notice, there are no ninja cops or republican enforcers to turn me away. This guy is the real deal and the crowd was great.Afterwards, the debate between John Kerry and the Crawford Cowboy was broadcast on two wide screen tv's.It was a fun event to attend.

Higgins Restaurant Drops Foie Gras
One of Portland, Oregon's finest restaurants, Higgins, recently announced it has discontinued serving foie gras, the fattened livers of force-fed ducks. The announcement comes after Higgins was encouraged by Northwest VEG (NW VEG) and IDA to drop the cruel product from its menu. This important step for animals sets an important precedent for IDA and APRL's campaign to get restaurants to remove foie gras from their menus.

In Response to Tasering of 11-Year Old, Indy Readers Discuss the Ineptitude of the Portland Police Department

One cop apologist states: "You take a compass to the eye and then tell me it is not dangerous. Vests are not designed to stop pointed weapons, such as knives, etc. How big was the kid? Tasing him probably saved him from being beaten senseless with sticks. Okay, maybe that would have been better than a taser! Make lots of people happy that the cops didn't tase him!"

Readers respond: "...Please. An 11 year old child. I don't care what he was doing. This is WAY over the top..."
"...So, you say the kid could have put out an officer's eye with the compass? Maybe if the officer just stands totally still and doesn't do anything..." "...Where was a CIT officer, or a counselor, or anybody willing to try and just talk to the kid - while others could get into position to tackle him if talking didn't work? If PPB officers are so afraid of an 11 year-old that they have to use a taser, then they are in the wrong line of work. Your arguments are only excuses for bad decision making and heavy handed police work."

One reader asks: "What was the urgency to dramatically incapacitate him? Late for donut break? Are the gang so bereft of negotiating skills, of the ability or willingness to talk to citizens, civilians (other than barking usually confusing orders in broken phrases), so inept at performing like adults in confronting an angry pre-adolescent?"

Mike Ruppert on KBOO (Weds. 10am) says VP Cheney key to 9/11 attacks releases 1st book
Michael C. Ruppert through his newsletter "From the Wilderness" has been writing for the last six years on the topics of drug trafficking (including government and corporate involvement), world oil supply and energy usage, and military operations that support "the Empire." From the Wilderness has been one of the foremost outlets on the World Trade Center/9-11 reporting. One of the most significant points in Ruppert's book "Crossing the Rubicon" is that he names Vice President Richard Cheney as the central planner of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Just released, Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire and the End of the Age of Oil by New Society Publishers. [ Read More ] [ http://www.newsociety.com/News/rub.html ]

Follow-up to Tre Arrow's International Call-out from Aug.'04
October 11, 2004 With tons of gratitude and heartfelt sincerity, Tre and his closest supporters send out a huge hello and thank you to all who continue sending him good energy and vibes! He is trying to nourish himself to a (hardly) satisfactory level, per the facility's willingness to "bend" somewhat with regard to Tre's raw, vegan, organic diet, and he just survived the toughest week of his incarceration. His sense of hope has been rekindled due to some recent developments.

A wonderful soul in the lower mainland area of southwestern British Columbia has stepped forward to OFFER his home as the "house arrest" space to meet Tre's bail requirement. Tre's hearing related to this matter is NEXT WEEK...week of October 19th...and he still NEEDS a 24/7 person; that is, someone who might be open to the idea of hanging with Tre, literally, in the same space as he, for (quite possibly) the next several months, while on house arrest... Oregonian Digs Deep For Dirt on Wu
This incident, in the Oregonian's own words, "has no link to Wu's record as a politician," "The newspaper established no pattern of similar behavior," and "The lack of interviews with the two people most directly involved [and the only actual witnesses to the event] made it more difficult to establish precisely what had transpired."

Try "practically impossible." In court they call what details the Oregonian managed to dredge up, "heresay." One of the persons quoted in the article was not available for personal or contemporary comment, Leah Kaplan, the school counselor, died August 24th. "Whether it was an amorous [relationship] or whether it was just platonic or what, I was never able to determine . . ." says Raoul K. Niemeyer, a patrol commander who questioned Wu and who is quoted extensively throughout the article. Wu was NOT CHARGED, NOT ARRESTED by the police nor was ANY FORMAL DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKEN, despite what other newspapers and television outlets are now reporting.

The Oregonian's Endorsed Candidate Goli Ameri: "Refugee" or Elitist?
From the open publishing newswire: Goli Ameri has succeeded in portraying herself with a "refugee" fable rather then the reality of a privileged, European-educated college student who got stuck in America during the fall of Iranian monarchy and revolutionary displacement of a royalist elite that included her family.
Wu's Inexcusable Collegiate Behavior & The Oregonian's Pro-Ameri Bias
From the open publishing newswire: The Oregonian's expose of Congressman Wu's regrettable, inexcusable behavior against a woman while in college HAS to be viewed in relation to the admitted pro-Ameri bias on the part of The Oregonian, which has now endorsed Ameri TWICE...

To Dismantle War On Terror
Whether or not Bush gets elected, the effort to dismantle war on terror must continue. You might recognize war on terror as a system, a myth, an economic stimulus package, or all of these, and being able to define what it means is certainly important. War on terror began with apparently limited objectives; these objectives mushroomed within in a year to sweeping adjustments of U.S. domestic law enforcement, and foreign policy. Now, three years after the start, war on terror has become something wholly intangible and pliable, and there is a thick veil of mystery about what it actually is. This mystery is what makes the world tremble now.

Organizing For More Genuine Change
It is critical whatever happens on november third we organize to bring about some more genuine change to the USA. its rather apparent whoever wins the election, the majority of issues this community cares about will continue to be ignored in favor of business as usual. none of it changes until people start to live differently. environmental catastrophe, economic terrorism, political alienation, these are all consequences of one root cause: almost everyone on earth needs to perpetuate these things to stay fed and sheltered. until the simple fact that most of us are beholden to corporations for our existence is dealt with, there will be no changes except by those people privileged enough to buy nicer lifestyles with said priviledge.

Killed on the 4th of July

WASHINGTON, D.C. - January, 2001. Clarke's anti-terrorism plan is presented to the incoming administration. Despite admonishments to security adviser Condoleezza Rice that the Bush administration would spend more time on terrorism in general and on al Qaida specifically, than any other subject, persons at meetings in the first days of the Bush administration later report that Iraq, not anti-terrorism, was the main topic discussed.
Marine recruiters are in my school 5 days a week, pitching college benefits and telling us we'll be trained in explosives. My friends and I think that sounds cool and we download the free recruiting war video game.

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 15, 2001-A government commission issues The Hart-Rudman report, warning that "mass casualty terrorism directed against the U.S. homeland was of serious and growing concern" and recommending the creation of "A National Homeland Security Agency". The White House does not implement the recommendation.
My jock period ends when I get a guitar for Christmas, I start jamming with friends, and we win a talent show. For the first time I experience what it's like to move people, and I have the glimmerings of a goal - a degree in music. I have two years and five months to live.

Defeat of the Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force possible this year; Citizen action required immediately
eroding flag - PJTTF Tired of pigz and feds abusing their collective powers to squash your voice? Tired of your friends' social weaknesses being used as a tool to undermine your work? Tired of Meyers following you with a tape recorder at protests(what is he whispering in to those things anyway?...hmm)? Well, we actually have a chance at making these activites more challenging for them! In the past, the city council members have been very supportive of the Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force. All reformist tactics were destined to be in vain. This time three of them are having their doubts. Especially after all of the negative media attention surrounding the Brandon Mayfield case. Dan Saltzman, Erik Sten, and Randy Leonard have all issued statements expressing their concerns.

So what should we do about this? As a community we need raise our voices together again(despite all our stark differences as of late, which the feds I'm sure have thoroughly enjoyed exploiting). We need to write letters or postcards(they are cheaper & more eye catching), everyone must testify, and we need all the people we can possibly fit into the chambers.

For the Neo-Cons, the War in Iraq is Already Won
It does not matter whether or not George Bush is thrown out of office in November. The fact that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction does not bother Secretary Rumsfeld or Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz. The scandal that is the invasion of Iraq does not cause Dick Cheney or Elliott Abrams to lose sleep at night. They know that they will never be tried as criminals for lying to Congress as they deserve to be and as a Democratic parallel would be. And most importantly, the loss of a secure, albeit totalitarian Iraq as a staunch opponent to radical Muslim fundamentalism does not bother them in the slightest. Why? Because the war in Iraq has already been won. Iraq was not selected as a target in the war on terror following an exhaustive weighing of the options after 9/11. The country was selected as a target by elite members of neo-conservative society years ago. The Project for a New American Century, or PNAC, is one of the most ideologically unified and powerful neo-conservative think tanks in American politics. Since PNAC's inception in 1997, it has isolated Iraq as the first step in a broader effort to dominate the Middle East and by extension, the world.

COLUMBUS DAY BE DAMNED! 11.10.2004 23:37
Olympia: 100 people gather to celebrate indigenous people and honor the lands "discovered" by Columbus
Many Olympia area youth, adults, students and families came to the park at 5:00 and peacefully marched to the Capitol where songs were sung and passionate speakers discussed history, the present and the future with open hearts. Campaigns to alter school curriculums regarding Columbus' "heroism" and to push for new legislation for a federal alteration of Columbus Day to Indigenous Day were announced. It was a valuable and high-energy experience that reflects positively on the people that were present: we all know there are problems inherent in the celebration of Columbus' legacy and we mobilized in support of those that Columbus' legacy has displaced. The indigenous people of these lands are still here and still sovereign, still fighting for their (our) lives and destinies.

IMC UNDER ASSAULT 11.10.2004 22:15
Indymedia to U.S., U.K., Swiss and Italian Authorities: "Hands Off Our Websites"
global indymedia logo Evidence is beginning to mount that the authorities of at least four countries (Switzerland, Italy, U.K. and U.S.A.) are involved in last week's seizure of two of Indymedia's servers that brought down more than 20 of the Indymedia network's web sites and several internet radio streams. Indymedia has yet to receive any official statement or information about what the order entailed or why it was issued. An FBI spokesperson, Joe Parris, confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the FBI issued a subpoena to the provider who hosted the Indymedia servers in the U.K., but that it was "on behalf of a third country."

As of Monday, October 11, five of the downed websites have been restored, including Brasil, Euskal Herria, Poland, UK and Nice. Indymedia volunteers are working around the clock to restore the remaining sites, however at least four of them - Uruguay, Italy, Western Massachusetts and Nantes - have suffered data loss as a result of the governments' action.

"This FBI operation gives us even more reason to continue with what we have been doing for several years," says an activist from Italy Indymedia.

Perspective on the International Theft of Indymedia's News Servers
Let's compare the FBI's handling of this with a similar case in which "national security" is the purported issue. Specifically the jailing of NY Times reporter Judith Miller. What if the FBI had seized the NY Times web servers in the course of its investigation? Such a move would be denounced as an outrage! Yet the NY Times, which is bending over to protect Miller (who uncritically passed on bogus intelligence from the Bush administration as "news"), doesn't even have the courage to report on this story which is now several days old.

Colorado American Indian Movement and allies blockade Columbus "Convoy of Conquest" Parade in Denver; Over 200 arrested
columbus day protest in denver Today [Oct. 9], in the streets of downtown Denver, scores of American Indian Movement members, and our TCD allies were arrested in a principled act of civil resistance to the "Convoy of Conquest" (aka: Columbus Day Parade). Despite any denials by its organizers, the Convoy is a celebration of genocide against the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and it elevates the theft of our homelands, and the murder of our people, to national holiday status. To Colorado AIM this is intolerable and unjustifiable.

Our arrests are designed to expose a corrupt educational, legal and political system that refuses to describe the destruction of millions of indigenous people at the hands of Columbus for what it is: genocide. In a legal and political system that rationalizes and justifies the murder, theft, and ongoing betrayal of our peoples and nations, we, as the victims of such a system are under an obligation to expose such moral and legal bankruptcy, and we actively refuse to cooperate with legalized murder and theft. Our arrests today lay bare the facts (they are not allegations) that Columbus was personally responsible for

Southern Oregon UNwelcomes Bush

W is coming to southern Oregon. And he plans to sleep in the tiny town of Jacksonville on Thursday night after his rally in Central Point. Rather than submit to the "free speech cage" in Central Point, deal with all the traffic and parking headaches, we are organizing a big unwelcome rally in Jacksonville.

This will be a hospitality event the likes of which Jville has never seen.

Feel like a road trip? Come on down and bring signs & message why W is not welcome in Southern Oregon. We will rally at Griffin Park in Jville @ 5:30, march thru town (all 4 blocks long) and unroll a red carpet banner with messages of unwelcome.

GOPUSA shows it fears Nader's appeal to reluctant Bush voters
This Republican Party mouthpiece pretends to mock Democrat complaints of Nader's impact in 2000 and 2004, but is clearly designed to convince the website's GOP readership of two basic lies:

1) The lie that it is plausible to think 90% of Nader voters would have voted Gore if forced to choose Bush or Gore, when all the data that exists show no more than 45% at best would have voted Gore. This lie is meant to steer Republican and conservative Independent readers away from giving Nader a fair hearing by painting Nader as a left fringe candidate, when in fact Nader is a far better conservative candidate than Bush ever was.

2) The lie that Nader is a "fringe" candidate in terms of his platform, agenda and potential appeal to the mainstream electorate, as opposed to being "fringe" in terms of corporate monopoly media coverage and concomitant poll percentages.

Occupation of Blue River Face Timber Sale continues
Remarked Old Growth Cedar in Blue River Face The occupation of the Blue River Face Timber Sale in the Willamette National Forest has been ongoing for the last two months, defending ancient forest in the Blue River area of the Mckenzie Watershed. Activists are living high in a Douglas Fir tree in unit 5d of the sale, a spectacular setting in an area known to contain the highest amount of biomass on earth, even greater than the tropical rainforests of South America.

Since the Mckenzie Ranger District has felt it neccessary to proceed with this illegal timber sale they have now got a tree-sit on their hands. The tree-sit is a short distance uphill from the Blue River, a body of water that is fast flowing, clean and clear and should be protected at any cost. The US Forest Service has no business planning a timber sale with tributary streams running through it and down to the Blue River.
