Currently the law reads that one can not tape record a police officer unless that officer has knowledge that the conversation is being recording. Under a new proposed law that would change completely and allow citizens to record police officers with or without their knowledge.
Even when you take a complaint to internal affairs about the actions of a police officer while in the scope of their duties, most of the "evidence" needs to be supplied by you when you make the complaint. However, the best evidence possible, a taped recording of the event, IE: traffic stop, stop and frisk, etc. could actually be used against YOU! That's right...this has happened to me personally, so I know how it goes. [ Read More ] [ www.portlandpolice.net ]
The common factor amoung these dogs is that they have all been to laurelhurst park within the last week. According to a city parks worker only very low grade toxic herbacides are used. There's speculation among some owners that the recent controversy over unofficial off-leash areas - instigated this apparent attack. The animal hospital has sent several samples to labs for testing - and necropsies are being performed on two of the dogs. So far there are only reports of dogs getting sick at Laurelhurst. Dog owners should watch their pets for the following symptoms. # Vomiting and or diarrhea. # A loss of energy or loss of appetite.

A massive international (US/Canada/Japan) research project planned for late August off the coast of Vancouver Island will likely injure and kill marine mammals, fish, birds and turtles. A massive international (US/Canada/Japan) seismological research project is planned for late August and early September, 2003, off the south coast of Vancouver Island. This project will use an extremely large air cannon, firing at a volume of 243dB. We understand that this level is higher than the seismic tests in Baja that killed beaked whales.
The greyhound industry has done it again. In the waning hours of the Oregon 2003 legislative session, when the budget isn't complete and schools are hurting, a bill that already died in the Senate resurfaced in the House to enrich the pockets of the multi-billionaire that owns the track. HB 3646 would allow the track to run dogs 12 months a year, instead of six. [ Read More ]
If you're not paranoid you're not paying attention. I stepped out during the film(Shots On The Docks) for a smoke. Before I went inside I noticed a man, who had been walking around the parking lot, looking at the front of a vehicle in the parking lot. At the time I didn't think much of it, thinking maybe it was his car. The man(wearing an ILWU shirt) never came inside. After the video showing I caught a ride with someone. It was but a few minutes later that we were pulled over... The cop started searching through the car and through the drivers bag. Even after I told the driver to clearly state that he did not consent to a search of his property and he stated this, the cop continued the search. Having already called the tow truck without telling us, the cop told him that he had a "choice". Either leave the car and find a way home or he was going to tow the car and give him a ticket. The driver pleaded with the cop that there must be some sort of mistake("mistake" indeed, maybe a PJTTF "computer glitch"!). Then the tow truck arrived and the cop told him that he was towing him because he argued with him when he was so generous as to offer him a "choice". So then we were stranded and had to walk to the nearest MAX stop and find our way from there.
On Saturday, July 12, SEIU 503, the Oregon Public Employees Union took an important step in passing (unanimously) the following resolution. It should be noted that this text was fashioned from an earlier resolution that was passed by the Student Government of Southern Oregon University. Students and Oregon State Workers workin' together in the protection of our civil rights. Now, that's a pretty damn good thing!!!
Title of resolution: A resolution of non-compliance with the USA PATRIOT Act, The Domestic Security Enhancement Act Of 2003, Justice Department directives, and Executive Orders that undermine our civil liberties and inalienable rights granted by the constitution of the united states of america. A portrait of Christ pointing at the viewer with one hand and holding up a Peace sign with the other, as if to say, "I want YOU for Peace" (or perhaps, "I want Peace for YOU!"), sat in its reassembled pieces on the sidewalk. (The original work had recently been stolen and shredded by a group of young, ignorant men passing by the camp in a pickup truck at 3am. The theft, which I personally witnessed, was somewhat in contrast to the later actions of the thieves, who returned to the camp, had a conversation with the people there, and left the pieces of the sign with the campers when they departed.) Green house youth drop in center closed it's doors earlier this month leaving at least 100+ homeless youth to find different ways to survive without food or showers, something must be done about the homeless problem that Mayor Katz wants to sweep under the rug.
Greenhouse closed and that means that 100+ kids are left without a place to go for food.. Please rally together and help me to do something about this, I am one of those kids. I have left it behind for Job Corps, but am concerned for friends that are still there!
* Oregon was until recently a leader for the nation in modeling cost-effective, community-based services for vulnerable people. Most working folks are just an accident, an illness, whatever insurance, and their savings away from needing access to such a safety net themselves. *
Now that the safety net has been largely dismantled, the people who once worked to provide services, and the people whose lives depended on these services, will have to fend for themselves. This legislative action has already caused unnecessary and unmeasureable devastation, damage and death to many thousands of Oregonians. We must let our legislators know that Oregonians need our community safety net restored. Chance circumstance can make anyone vulnerable, and a helping hand can make the vital difference between our choossing life with dignity, or death without it. SAVE OUR SANITY! Call to Action from Support Oregon Services Alliance, SOSA: Wednesday, July 16th, ten AM to 2 or 3 PM at the State Capitol in Salem. homepage: http://www.indyspeech.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10

A true carnival atmosphere can astound. Here are two reports from Saturday and Sunday to give you a sense of what you missed or remind you of what you heard. Here is

"The German economy in the last two quarters has skidded into a recession after almost three years of stagnation..In a recession, the state must take a leadership role in solving the main problem, inadequate demand. Complaining about excessive labor costs and excessive regulation would quickly disappear when the sales- and demand expectations are met. Who can bring this about if not politics standing outside economic competition?" This article originally published July 11, 2003 is translated from the German.
On Bastille Day the French show their support for rebellion and Jose Bove. The modern prison where political prisoner Jose Bove is incarcerated is built in the scrubby garrigue, a rocky shrub covered landscape that covers a lot of the land between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes Mountains in the South of France. Bove, the leader of the Cofederation Paysanne, a french small farmers union, is imprisoned for political reasons, though the official reason is that Bove destroyed Genitically Modified crops government scientists were growing in a govt. lab. Bove is a political prisoner because his sentence is extraordinary in a country where farmers and truckers and winemakers regularly break the law to express their outrage at government policies. Bove is dangerous because he is a skilled political activist who knows how to use the media, and how to form coalitions with groups outside of France who are opposed to capitalistic methods of farming. Bove wrote a book titled 'The World is not a Commodity'. Bove is also vocally pro-Palestinian, in a country where you can be arrested for disrespecting the Israeli flag. So we gathered in the hot garrigue near the prison, within sight of the mediterranean in one direction and the city of Montpellier in the other. There were people from the League Communiste Revolutionaire, whose presidential candidate, a 27 year old postman, won over 4 percent of the votes in the last election. Also people from the anti corporate globalization group Attac. Also the Green Party was represented, as was the anarchist CNT, and the radical labor union Sud. [ Read More ]

This morning, I finally had the opportunity to test a suspiscion I have had for some time. After the events of March the 25th, I suspected that Portland Police officers may be selectively enforcing laws in order to silence political dissent. Specifically, I watched on March 25th as people who were protesting the war against Iraq were intimidated, beaten, pepper sprayed and arrested by police. In the course of this treatment, I saw numerous people get arrested and hauled off to jail for the "crime" of jaywalking.
Arrested for jaywalking? When was the last time you ever saw anything like that? Even in the most draconian, Iron Curtain dictatorships, I haven't heard of people being beaten, gassed, and arrested for jaywalking. (Except of course, Israel, where Palestinians are shot for similar offenses.) It seemed strange to me. Could it be that the police were abusing their authority? Could it be that they were using a seldom-enforced and universally ignored rule to crack down on dissenting voices? Here in America, no less? [ Read More ]
