Sawyers Bar, Ca. - During the past weeks, a group calling themselves the Healthy Forest Militia implemented small diameter fuels reduction in a Knob Timber Sale unit in the Klamath National Forest. This comes at a time when the controversial Healthy Forest Initiative sits on the senate floor. Opponents of the initiative warn that what George Bush and the United States Forest Service justify as fire protection and fuel reduction through its "Healthy Forest" Initiative actually increases the risk of high intensity forest fires that threaten homes and communities.
After the humiliating defeat of the Iraq war the anti war and other progressive groups are having second thoughts about how to go about their activism a debate is taken place that I havn't seen for a long time. Who to vote for, direct action vs. civil disobedience, nonviolence and revolution are all being discussed with a fervor which is necissary and refreshing. Coming to an informed understanding of what an individual can and should do is a very difficult one to reach....
One of the secret strengths to police officers is their anonymity. 9 - 5 they're uniformed and endorsed. After-hours, despite their actions, they're at liberty to merge with the rest of society without identification. This gives the individual relief from societal pressure to behave within community standards. It's gives rational to bizarre and dangerous behaviors, such as taking orders they don't actually think about or concern within the golden rule. A temporary solution for this is http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/12/national/12NET.html?hp A large number of PPB officer photos and names have been collected at this indymedia over the past couple of years. The is senior staff photos and bios on the PPB site. The City of Portland is stealing your money....and you're letting them as long as you don't fight their technology-based evidence called Photo Radar. The program is a scam and the City of Portland has lied about it. 23 Other states have outlawed Photo Radar...but Portland is trying to cling on to their "shooting fish in a barrel" game that so many lazy officers enjoy.

Well, I just got back into Portland today from a couple weeks off from the encampment, that I've been at since March 21 and got a welcome home from the portland police. Officer Westbrook and Lt. Humsperger arrested me tonight and took everything from the vigil, seems as thought the police are still up to no good. I was released shortly after being arrested, which is a complete suprise considering that if you get arrested on a Friday at 6:00 pm they usually hold you for the weekend. I did have a chance to do some good yoga and meditation while in the holding cell and now I'm back at the encampment. Officer Westbrook did tell me that all the property that was taken is not going to be release, because it was abandonded and would not give a reciept. If anybody would like to make a donation or help out in any way stop by or give me a call at the camp at 971-570-7018, anything would help because the took it all food, signs, blankets, flowers, clothes, etc... It's great to be back in Portland, much peace and love to all.

At least on person arrested, materials confiscated at the Peace Camp. Reich Marshall Kreoker has struck again. Kroeker's ridiculous band of idiots, torturers, murderers, and willful enemies of the US and Oregon Constitutions, have crossed the line which separated them from being dangerous morons and traitors to the US and now may qualify them as being full blown terrorists under current US law.
I just passed by the Peace Camp and saw several squad cars on the scene. All of the materials at the camp appeared to have been confiscated. In a brief conversation with a person on the scene, I learned that at least one person has been arrested; a man by the name of Todd. The person that I spoke with said that the police had failed to convey the charges.

AGG has been working on a garden project on a land trust in Oregon City. We are meeting this Saturday (June 12) at 4:30pm at the Star E Rose Café (2403 NE Alberta St).
Our main goal this weekend is to build a fence around the garden and do whatever general maintenance is needed. As time permits, there is always plenty to learn from and help farmer John with, work on art/ascetics around the garden, talk about out goals & ideas, and of course EAT!
Last weekend at mahonia was great. Without fencing materials there was not a whole lot to do around our garden. Kate and I spent most of friday helping john. We weeded some veggies and put wood chips around some potato plants. John gave us a tour showing us all the different things he has growing. John and Bev are both a wealth of information, it was great to work with them for the day. On Saturday Shade and I cleared out the blackberries from behind the sun house where our garden is. That will make it much more accessible once the fence is up.
Fleeing the boredom and gravedirt smell of city hall, as they talk about how to make corporate welfare prettier and more acceptable to us all (South Waterfront Project), I stumbled across the Justice for Janitors rally. SEIU shirts and banners dominated the scene, though there were a couple of disgruntled few from the local 140. The crowd looked to number in the 100-200 range, but I'm a bad estimator. The rally started at around 4pm in the South Park Blox (Salmon & Park). It was unpermitted, peaceful and boisterous.
The crowd took the streets, then went into a building ... where, I think, they're refusing to use union janitors. There were drums. It was loud. There was dancing. Information was left behind. And they left. Outside, on the side of the parking structure, three people held a huge banner, at first waving in the wind, then secured. It was SEIU's purple and gold and said, "Got Healthcare?" Very successful banner hang.

Congress continues its misguided efforts to speed logging to reduce fire risk. After the grossly misnamed "Healthy Forests Restoration Act" (HR 1904) was rushed through the House, it received a hearing in the Senate Agriculture Committee. Two new bills were then introduced in the Senate last week.
The Bingaman/Daschle legislation would broaden the government's ability to ignore the public, avoid environmental analysis, and could promote logging in old-growth and roadless forests far from the rural communities threatened by fire. The Bingaman/Daschle bill also unnecessarily blocks citizen's right to appeal agency actions and limits the ability of the courts to enforce environmental laws.
The Wyden/Feinstein bill includes language that may protect old-growth forests and Inventoried Roadless Areas. Troubling elements of the Wyden/Feinstein bill diminish the credibility of the Wyden/Feinstein bill and make it unacceptable. However, if these contentious sections are modified or removed, the remaining legislation could protect both rural communities and our old-growth forests and the wildlife they shelter. Call Senator Wyden's office today! He is visiting Oregon this week and needs to hear your concerns.
Oregon was until recently a leader for the nation in modeling cost-effective, community-based services for vulnerable people. Most working folks arejust an accident, an illness, whatever insurance, and their savings away from needing access to such a safety net themselves. Now that the safety net has been largely dismantled, the people who once worked to provide services, and the people whose lives depended on these services, will have to fend for themselves. This legislative action has already caused unnecessary and unmeasureable devastation, damage and death to many thousands of Oregonians.

OHSU has applied for NIH grants, your tax dollars, totaling 200 million dollars [yes *another* $200 million] to put in a Level 4 Bio-terrorism lab at OHSU's West Campus, the Oregon Primate Center, 505 NW 185th. Ebola, anthrax, and hantavirus, the most deadly and dangerous airborne viruses and agents on the earth could be kept there. According to Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone, an airborne strain of Ebola could emerge and circle the world in about six weeks. How long do you think it would take it to get to downtown Portland?
Come to the meeting and find out what OHSU doesn't want you to know about their history of ignoring safety protocols in their Level 3 HIV Lab and the human health hazards for you if this Level 4 lab comes to your community. Participate in the discussion as Matt Rossell, a former OHSU Primate Center employee, speaks about what he witnessed cruel animal treatment, USDA violations, mistakes in research and dangerous work practices. What: Community Planning Organization (CPO #9) July meeting
I write these comments on this beautiful Thursday morning not to initiate another furious (and likely troll instigated) debate over strategies, but to share some of my knowledge and understanding. I, myself, used to be sold on the civil disobedience and nonviolence religion. I used to teach nonviolence and civil disobedience workshops and classes across the country. Additionally, I was so compelled by the ideology that I took part in a dozen or so nonviolent civil disobedience actions. After my experiences, after years of research on nonviolence ideology and civil disobedience strategy as well as history, I seriously question the value of civil disobedience and its potential to actually confront the murderous and diseased U.S. government. I do believe the practice of civil disobedience is another deterrent preventing substantial change from occurring in this country.
The problem with civil disobedience is that it requires the opponent to have a healthy, working conscience for any significant change to occur. Only a healthy and working conscience would allow someone to see the evils in her/his own actions and voluntarily change. Yet, I would argue the overwhelming majority of those performing large scale acts of injustice in the United States do not have this healthy conscience ... If our Commander in Chief had a healthy and working conscience would he have thrust the U.S. into a war in Afghanistan and Iraq? Would he be leaving U.S. troops there only to be picked off one by one in a guerilla war? ... To believe that an individual without a healthy and working conscience could be effected by a civil disobedience campaign demonstrates a lack of understanding of the civil disobedience strategy. On July 22, 2003, a boycott against Coca Cola will begin. SINALTRAINAL, the Colombian Food and Drinks Workers Union, has better reason reason than most to want such a boycott. Eight of its members have been assassinated by paramilitaries financed by Coca Cola bottling companies. Hundreds of their workers have been sacked and detained, even kidnapped, tortured, and disappeared, as part of the dirty war in Colombia that kills members of the social opposition so that multinational corporations can make profits.

Elections officials have received a second complaint against the right-wing Better Portland Alliance and recallvera.com alleging that the committee filed a fraudulent finance report with its recall petition.
This complaint comes only two weeks after the Elections Division acted on an earlier complaint and discontinued the first group's status as a political committee because it was not properly formed under state election law, which means that contributors to the BPA will not be able to claim the state political-contribution tax credit.
