Genetically modified food - which can grow more quickly
than traditional crops and can be resistant to insects - has caused scant controversy in the United States, where people eat it every day. Almost 40 percent of all corn planted in this country in genetically modified. The Bush administration and agricultural businesses view the policy as simple protectionism because American companies, which dominate the biotechnology industry, would benefit most from lifting the ban. Without it, American companies would export about $300 billion more in corn each year than they do now, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation
From the NY Times, June 19: "Talks between the United States and the European Union over opening up Europe to genetically modified foods broke down in Geneva today, the Bush administration announced, heightening trans-Atlantic tensions...Europe's resistance to modified crops received a political lift last week when a global treaty restricting them was approved"
i was riding my bike alone in downtown sacramento, dressed in black (like an idiot, lookin' hella sketchy) when a police officer came up and asked me to pull over. he got out and asked me, "are you here for the ministers of agriculture thing?" i told him that i wasn't going to divulge that information. "i don't have to fucking tell you anything!" that was the start of a two-hour experience.
Federal government agencies are failing to monitor genetically engineered crops to protect the environment and public health, according to two separate studies released today.
A U.S. Department of Agriculture tradeshow of biotechnology and genetically engineered lifeforms is set to begin in Sacramento. As of this writing, less than half the WTO member countries had accepted the invitation to attend, showing the tepid support for the U.S. corporate agenda. Activists from around the country and the world are converging to add their voices of opposition, and I am among them.
The showdown in Sac will kick-off with an action against Frakentrees.
Coalition launches campaign against International Paper
There is a noticeable police presence on the streets of Downtown Sacramento, and outskirts, and it is only Wednesday. I have seen "progressive" looking vehicles pulled over by Sacramento City Police earlier this evening, and have been followed for extended periods twice myself. Caution is the word that goes out to all of those converging on the Capitol City.

A major grassroots mobilization and convergence is planned in Sacramento from June 20-25. This is an opportunity for people to say no to a genetically engineered future, and to voice instead a living world vision, rooted in social justice and ecological sanity. It is also a chance to stand in solidarity with the people's movements and hundreds of peasant farmers groups from around the world that have called on social movements in the US to denounce and protest this meeting.

There is only one life. It is the life of resistance. The lives of millions are on the line. The corporate interests want to own all the water, all the food, all the land, all the trees, all the species, all the seeds, all the biology, all life. When they are through we will have no air, no water, no earth, no life force.
Come to Sacramento and resist. There is nothing more important.
German Ag minister has too much to do. Or maybe, she just doesn't want to sit around and listen to the US tell her how she better start eating that Brand XY rice, courtesy of Monsanto, or she's going to bed without apple pie for dessert

The seed technology embraced on more than 200,000 acres of cotton in the Central Valley is about to get a bigger -- and more controversial -- test: major California food crops. As soon as next year, California farmers may have the chance to grow herbicide-resistant rice. After that, wheat, lettuce, grapes and strawberries are likely targets for the crops, known by the acronym GMO, genetically modified organisms.

Via Campesina is an international movement which coordinates peasant organizations of small and middle-scale producers, agricultural workers, rural women, and indigenous communities from Asia, Africa, America, and Europe. It is an autonomous, pluralistic movement, independent from all political, economic, or other denomination. It is integrated by national and regional organizations whose autonomy is jealously respected.
