News is circulating that yet another anarchist has died due to state repression on Mayday. Within hours of the Dublin anarchist picnic Nicolįs David Neira Alvares was clubbed to the ground by up to eight police on the Bogota Mayday march and beaten on the head until he passed out. Police then prevented his comrades getting to him so it was some time before they could get him to hospital where he died earlier today.

"Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for what we will!" was the slogan of the 340,000 workers who marched in cities across the U.S. on May 1, 1886, calling for the eight-hour day.

Break out your dancin' boots! The Second Annual May Day Hoe-Down is coming to South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia. It will be in building 31 (the college Gymnasium) Friday, April 29th, starting at 7 PM and ending when we get tired.
Bored by the prospect of another May Day "celebration" that threatens to be neither enjoyable nor interesting, a few radicals in Portland, Oregon have decided to shake things up as they can.
As we have seen in the past, when workers unions take action, it works. But what about the workers union we never hear about, the poor workers union? Even panhandlers should have a workers union and stand up against the classism they have been receiving in Portland. The current condition for the homeless is horrible these days, but what are we doing to stop it?
is there anything going on this year for May Day?
Who's organizing the May Day protest? Will there be one? We need to start organizing now. If actions are not made, it'll be as if we gave up. Our power is dying. Our events are getting smaller and smaller. Isn't this our wake up call to do something?

May 04, 2004 Union members, presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich and his supporters, anarchists and socialists gathered in the North Park Blocks to march through downtown Portland this Saturday in recognition of May Day, also known as the international workers holiday. "May Day started out as the struggle for the eight hour day," Mark Downs, an International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 19 member, said. The controversial theme of this year's march was the quickly approaching presidential election. Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich spoke at a planned stop in the march. Some felt Kucinich's presence at the march was not fitting with the history of May Day. "We hate that a presidential candidate is here - we didn't come here for that," said Jane, a PSU student, "We are here because we care and want to show support [for workers rights]."
From my book of poetry (I later integrated poetry into my instrumental musical composition (March3 1994, I still remember when I did it) and put pieces in with my writing - like instead of writing a boring chapter in, say, fiction, just write a poem to move the action on instead and, POOF! Fun-ness!).
Happy belated MAYDAY
After attending the May Day march, I wonder what exactly is going on here? The history of May Day is a dispute between union members and anarchists, but at its heart, May Day is a celebration for the working class. The struggles of class war and the fight for workers rights is the spirit of May Day...and, you know, it seems Portland has lost its spirit.
I wish I had had a pie, honestly.
While you are marching today, please photograph as many police officers as possible and write down either their name or badge number. We have a copy of the roster from a friend that was done with it, so even partially identified cops can usually be matched to the deck if they are part of it. The following tips are good things to keep in mind at any civil unrest where you take photos.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2003, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance. I also call upon government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day.
There's only one thing missing from this victory, however, (aside from a whole bunch of people that used to be alive, that is), and that's a theme song. No imperialist act of naked aggression should be without a theme song...we are pretty sure it says that somewhere in the PNAC document...
We need to contact riders with citations, witnesses willing to testify in court, file a complaint about police violence, and consider a class-action lawsuit against the city. We need the names of officers (from the citations) who were involved. Confidentiality is guaranteed; you may participate or be represented to the degree with which you feel comfortable.
Not to disagree with any of the criticisms as to how the police attacked the Mass, I would still call it a successful ride!
The May Day march this year was attended by 500-1000 people, and included a Maypole, a stage set up on a rented flatbed truck, speakers, drummers, and Radical Cheerleaders.
portland's mayday 2003 celebrations were a good time but nothing really spectacular. oh, and it wasn't a good time for over half of critical mass, especially the poor fellow bloodied into the pavement by the portland police.
Reading Indymedia was a bad way to start my day.
(a real I witness account)
Can anyone tell me why black-clad cops were tollerated in a permitted march?
does anyone who recieved a citation on the mayday critical mass ride want to get together to discuss our case? My partner and i are interested in talking about the validity of these "violations" that cost $175.
Ok, lets try this again. I screwed the last post up, and please feel free to delete it Indy gurus. Here's the pictures I took today at the rally and parade for May Day.

That's right kids. You thought today was a day to march as a celebration of the proletariat? Nope. It's a day to honor our troops! You fools! Didn't you get the memo?
IWW said they'd announce a jail support number on the day of the march.
Call in sick this afternoon!
I've seen conflicting info about the start time for the march today.
May Day gives us focus on our collective purpose. It's appropriate to remember the day with a gift exchange. My gift to my brothers and sisters is information that may help them prevent the election to office of a major union-buster.
