The Portland Alliance, Portland's oldest progressive newspaper, published Oregon's only in-depth article on the March 19, 2005 protest against the Two Year Anniversary of Iraq's Invasion!
Eugene resisters shut down military recruitment center, inject graphic photos of the war into mainstream media, break the law at "private property" shopping center while police yield
In an attempt to document the numbers participating in the worldwide Global Day of Action protests, data from IMC (and a few other sources) are used to offer an accurate portrayal of worldwide participation. It is unfortunate how this information was denied/ignored by many media sources.
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world demonstrated against the War in Iraq on Mar. 19th and 20th.
encouraging news!
good photos and some text about an event that is HUGE for a military town; it's been claimed this was the biggest anti-war action in Fayetteville since the Vietname war.
The corporate media were too busy covering a demonstration by 30 fundamentalists trying to keep Shiavo from meeting her maker to bother cover ing the global and nationwide demonstrations against the U.S. Iraq War.
It read "Stop US Imperialism."
Here's to Eugene, "that single handed warrior
Who shut the bastards down." I caught this from CBS. Just so people know there did in fact become some protest there. Hopefully others will add first person accounts soon as well, eh?
i noticed stuff was planned all over the state
According to the Chicago Sun-Times (March 19, 2005):
"Hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear, lined the streets of downtown Chicago Saturday as anti-war protesters commemorated the second anniversary of the U.S. led invasion of Iraq." The number of protestors was estimated as "about a thousand." Permit for the march had earlier been denied by the City of Chicago, but the activist organizers appealed the city's violation of free speech -- only to have, on March 11, a federal judge dismiss the law suit! The route went from the city's Gold Coast neighborhood to the Federal Plaza where a rally was held.
pdx indymedia streaming web radio provided coverage of the events of the day in Portland and around the world, and discussions of the issues behind the ongoing war in Iraq. Callers from the street gave updates from Portland, Milwaukee and Baltimore.
I left the march early today. Truth be told, I wasn't really in the mood for a march. I haven't been for at least two years now, when I finally realized all those marches weren't making any difference. I go anyway, usually, for the same reason everyone else does: I can't figure out what else to do. But I did not stay today.
Vancouver WA protest begins weekend of actions.
I promise that this isn't a rant!! :) please read and comment...
i know many of us are getting tierd of the same pattern: we go downtown, march (either permitted or unpermitted) yell at people who are trying to get home and generally agree with us, yell at cops who also generally agree with us but are working to feed their kids and pay rent, get hearded into some random place in town (industrial SE, waterfont park, etc) where there is nothing we can go. We get to yell a lot, see each other, then we go home tierd and not having really acheived anything. I have some ideas that i would like to share...
This weekend, on the two-year anniversary of the war, Portland will join at least 725 other towns and cities across the United States in calling for the troops to come home now.
The big O had good news this afternoon- 700 of our fine Oregon National Guard soldiers are on thier way home after one hell of a long weekend in Iraq.
Join us in the streets this saturday to tell the cowardly chickenhawks running the show that we want them ALL home NOW.
This weekend, on the two-year annivesary of the Iraq War, anti-war events will take place in more than 725 communities, in all 50 states -- more than twice as many as on the first annivesary of the war. The unprecedented number of events reflects the growing breadth of U.S. peace organizing.
Here's an article I wrote about how 9-11 was both a terrorist attack and an inside job. If you can't stand the formatting here, go to:

this is the formal call-out for a black bloc on m19, but mostly on mayday. Consider this a dry run of the shenanigans we have in store for mayday.
An anti-imperialist leaflet now being distributed on the streets of Seattle. (I hope the Portland M-19 demonstration is large and militant.)--W.

"[Martin Luther] King and his kind have betrayed our bosom interests with their demagogic delirium. The poor fool knows nothing of the antagonist's true nature and has not the perception to read and learn by history and past events. In a nonviolent movement there must be a latent threat of eruption, a dormant possibility of sudden and violent action if concessions are to be won, respect gained, and the established order altered. That nonviolent theory is practicle in civilized lands among civilized people, the Asians and Africans, but a look at European history shows that anything of great value that ever changed hands was taken by force of arms." --George Jackson, Soledad Brother
Can we have a planning day for March 19th? Any colleges willing to reserve some space?
is there going to be a demonstration in eugene on march 19?
Everyone wants peace, that is a given. But the question is how far will we go to accomplish peace? Following an ice-cream truck around in a parade fashion is not my idea of an actual protest. Our voices need to be heard, not muffled. There have been too many times we have been ignored because of our lack of persistence. Do we not care anymore? When the war started we protested, but why have we dimmed our actions? March 19th should be the new beginning of a revolt. How many more people does our nation have to kill in order for people to understand what is going on? We are the ones that have to put an end to this senseless brutality. What ever happened to "For the people, by the people"? Time of action is at hand.
