This year's Indigenous Peoples Day events in Blaine, WA promise to be bigger than ever. Events include:A march to the Peace Arch and subsequent rally with speakers, a potluck and raffle, and the arrival of the 7th Annual NW AIM Spirit Run in honor of Alvin Littlehead. All events begin at noon, Saturday, October 7th.
i was skipping up the front stairs of the EMU - making my way to the ballroom to get myself a front row seat to see John Trudell - when i heard his voice being carried on the current of the wind, captivating a crowd gathered round in the outdoor free speech plaza. Trudell, along with Wilma Mankiller, were featured speakers at the University of Oregon for this years anti-Columbus, Indigenous Solidarity Day. I was unfamiliar with Native-American Wilma Mankiller, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, but always make a point of seeing Trudell whenever he makes an appearance in Eugene. The last time was seven years ago, so i was eager to hear what Trudell had to say after such a long hiatus. Always when i hear him speak it is like a shot of reality that lends clarity to my life. i didn't attend with the intention of taking notes and writing his rant into an article, but he has such a lot of good shit to say that i wanted to pass it on, which was part of his message when someone asked how we can deal with the almighty media. In response he urged us to speak *coherently* and *consciously* to those who are willing to listen, but not to try and make converts of anyone. The "Power of the People" says Trudell, is in our "coherent, conscious thoughts", and our ability to *think*, which will generate the energy that is needed. What does it mean for the U.S. to celebrate Columbus? Indigenous people have resisted the legacy of Columbus and still resist similar threats today. Together we can transform October 10th, 2005 in to a celebration of the self-governance and continued liberation of Indigenous People, exposing the legacy of Columbus' cruel inhumanity and embracing our histories and memories of resistance. In celebration of our common histories, we will march from Woodruff Park to Sylvester Park where we will celebrate Indigenous People's Day with our communities. Many Olympia area youth, adults, students and families came to the park at 5:00 and peacefully marched to the Capitol where songs were sung and passionate speakers discussed history, the present and the future with open hearts. Campaigns to alter school curriculums regarding Columbus' "heroism" and to push for new legislation for a federal alteration of Columbus Day to Indigenous Day were announced. It was a valuable and high-energy experience that reflects positively on the people that were present: we all know there are problems inherent in the celebration of Columbus' legacy and we mobilized in support of those that Columbus' legacy has displaced. The indigenous people of these lands are still here and still sovereign, still fighting for their (our) lives and destinies.

Today [Oct. 9], in the streets of downtown Denver, scores of American Indian Movement members, and our TCD allies were arrested in a principled act of civil resistance to the "Convoy of Conquest" (aka: Columbus Day Parade). Despite any denials by its organizers, the Convoy is a celebration of genocide against the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and it elevates the theft of our homelands, and the murder of our people, to national holiday status. To Colorado AIM this is intolerable and unjustifiable. Our arrests are designed to expose a corrupt educational, legal and political system that refuses to describe the destruction of millions of indigenous people at the hands of Columbus for what it is: genocide. In a legal and political system that rationalizes and justifies the murder, theft, and ongoing betrayal of our peoples and nations, we, as the victims of such a system are under an obligation to expose such moral and legal bankruptcy, and we actively refuse to cooperate with legalized murder and theft. It continues on today as the Native peoples remain oppressed and targeted by the American government and ruthless corporations. Indigenous Day is more than a denouncement of Columbus Day, a day which blindly celebrates the Native holocaust. Indigenous Day is about the awareness and condemnation of the ongoing oppression of the Native peoples that is still occurring in the world today. It's easy to condemn a dead man and say that Columbus wittingly brought about the systematic destruction of the Indigenous culture. It's more difficult to condemn society today, which may include ourselves, for allowing it to continue through our blind eye and silent voice. From the open publishing newswire: About 60-75 people convened at the U of O ampitheatre Saturday night for an impromptu anti-war protest. After various people there spoke out about recent protests & progressive actions & political events we marched from campus down 13th then stopped in the downtown park to hear the treesitter then eventually strolled on to the Federal Building (home of regional Forest Service, DEA) singing & chanting most of the way. We got encouraging honks from passing vehicles and an entourage of police on bicycles who respectfully kept their distance.
