From the open publishing newswire:
On my way to work this morning, I was barred from walking down Stark Street. Since I only work a block past the barricade, I asked the lone police officer if I could pass. He said I could not. Suddenly, it dawned on me why. "Is this for Cheney?" I asked. He nodded politely. I frowned and began to walk away. At that moment, the shiny black limos and the big stupid SUV thing emerged from the underground parking lot. Of course he slithered into town like a snake, or maybe more like a quart of dirty oil on a rainy street. even the cops had very little notice- it was pretty obvious. But we only had three or four of us to give the republicans being spirited in and out a bad time. Is everybody just burned out or what? Channel 2 and channel came out but got bored and went home. I left at about 9:30pm. But I'm going to wake up at 0 dark thirty and be back down there at five. We need a couple hundred people at least. It looks like they are going to stuff him in a limo in a tent on the north side of the hotel and whisk him up Oak street (I think it's oak) I cant belive we dont have a few more dedicated folks to make some noise on the street this evening. we are going to lose our bad reputation here folks! From the open publishing newswire:
A chilling aspect of the 6:00 news report on Cheney's Eugene bund rally yesterday was the completely tolerated violent group assault on a protester. A man in a white t-shirt with "Pro-Jesus, Bring the Troops Home" written on it began shouting during Cheney's speech. A 66 year old man, Art Briga of Springfield, in a red-orange jacket, lunged at the protester and put him in a wrestling headlock -- with a hand clamped over the protester's mouth. Another man shoved the protester backwards as others began pulling the protester from behind. The protester's female companion (similar t-shirt) seemed to be appealling to them to stop the assualt. The TV report then showed the man (Art Briga) who committed the initial assault outside after the rally, saying that protesters are "snakes in the grass" and need to be stamped down.
When i first arrived & approached what appeared to be the perimeter, marked with police tape, one cop said i can't be there. I pointed out that i was outside the police tape. Another cop said i was alright, but the first cop said no, that i had to be behind those a-frame barricades "over there" "navy dad" writes: A dedicated core of oregonians greeted dickie boy on his staged town hall meeting today.as usual, the regulars showed up to let the butcher of halliburton know he is not welcome.the ninja turtles were there to protect the vice president from the crowd too.a big thank-you goes out to all who were there to assemble and petition our grievances.and for the bushies who told me to "f*ck off",i hope you do not kiss your wife with that mouth tonight.
Don Butcher, one of the marchers, responded after the rally, "I was deeply moved today by the more than one hundred people showing up to demonstrate that a substantial population in our area demand that we move beyond the politics of militancy, cronyism, monotheism, etc., to an America of vision, wisdom, equality and inclusivity." As the Cheney meeting ended, many attendees leaving the Convention Center walked across the parking lot to join the Kerry supporters lining the street. The gathering reflected the diversity of Eastern Oregon -- retired folks, young people in dredlocks beating drums, Native Americans in tribal regalia, veterans, working people, professional people, young mothers and their children, and high school students.
Ossifer Felts at the Cheney protest was toting a Belgian FN303 "marker" rifle. It's powered by CO2, fires a .68 caliber "paintball" that contains very little paint, about 5% pepperspray, and the toxic heavy metal Bismuth the main ingredient. This weapon caused damage to facial nerves when used against a union leader in Switzerland who objected verbally as the police beat down her son. Bismuth was imbedded all over the muscle and fat of her face, so close to nerves that it couldn't be safely removed by emergency room physicians. Her doctor called the police, asking what this metal was, and they denied knowledge of this weapon and responded that it must have been something thrown by a demonstrator. So here's the scoop before it happens in PDX. [ read more ] More Pictures from the Demonstration: [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ]July 2004 Cheney Protests
If you are unhappy with this Administration's policies at home and abroad meet us at 11:30 am in the East Parking Lot (across from the golf course) at Ike. Bring a sign, bring a friend, bring your voice! Let George Bush, Dick Cheney and Doc Hastings know that there are Patriots and People of Conscience in Yakima who do not support their policies. The demonstrator reminded the police of the numerous lies told by "that man", saying that there were no WMD, there were no Chemical weapons on 45 minute standby, there were no unmanned aerial vehicles with bio-weapons, there was no Niger yellow cake uranium, there was no aluminum tubes for ultra-centrifuges and that ther was no al-Q'aida link. Then an organizer played over the same loudspeaker Martin Luther King's anti-Viatnam speach at the reflecting pond in Washington, D.C. All of which caused the individual officers in the riot fitted police line all to drop their heads and begin examining their shoes. I only wish that one of them would have had the courage to upuhold the law and protect the citizes by ARRESTING Dick Cheny. Pictures: [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ]July 2004 Cheney Protests

From the open publishing newswire:
Although improperly stamped "SECRET" on February 28th of last year the "Justification and Approval" for a non-competitive contract award to Haliburton's KBR division was recently declassified. Although there is no cap on the dollar value of the contract, a worst case scenario is approximated at 15.7 billion dollars.
All who attended were peaceful, though legitimately angered over the diminishment of their right to voice their grievences to an elected official and the ludicrous show of force by local law enforcement. And too, the corporate media were not herded into the same area, but were outside the "zone," enjoying freedom of movement and access to interviews with the protesters through the chain link fence. From the open publishing newswire:
it was interesting to see the police riding the max line. about 8 multnomah county sheriffs, wearing their new, military style fatigues boarded the train car in east portland. throughout the day the cops were alternately shaking down people they thought were protestors for their tickets and then telling people directions to their pen. it seemed like a capitalistic 2004 version of 1937 germany. ('papers, please...') i MUCH prefer a protest like the august 22, 2002 visit, where bush, the republican fat cats, and the police were the ones in the pen. that left the entire city for us to do our thing. that was our day. we may not get another one just like it. meanwhile, cheney, who is so respected that they won't even let him in TOWN, relies on a phalanx of police state muscle to shield him from his admirers from the moment he arrives until the moment he leaves.
