By now youve got the news. Dirty Dick Cheney is staying the night at the benson hotel. Of course he slithered into town like a snake, or maybe more like a quart of dirty oil on a rainy street. even the cops had very little notice- it was pretty obvious. But we only had three or four of us to give the republicans being spirited in and out a bad time. Is everybody just burned out or what? Channel 2 and channel came out but got bored and went home. A chilling aspect of the 6:00 news report on Cheney's Eugene bund rally yesterday was the completely tolerated violent group assault on a protester. A man in a white t-shirt with "Pro-Jesus, Bring the Troops Home" written on it began shouting during Cheney's speech. A 66 year old man, Art Briga of Springfield, in a red-orange jacket, lunged at the protester and put him in a wrestling headlock -- with a hand clamped over the protester's mouth. Another man shoved the protester backwards as others began pulling the protester from behind. The protester's female companion (similar t-shirt) seemed to be appealling to them to stop the assualt. The TV report then showed the man (Art Briga) who committed the initial assault outside after the rally, saying that protesters are "snakes in the grass" and need to be stamped down.

I've been to many protests in 44 years, but today's against cheney in Oregon City made me notice more than usual how bizarre & confused police can be. I suppose i was bored & had to keep my mind occupied on something. The most disgusting sight, of course, was the usual riot-cops-face-off-citizens bit at the end, when "the dick" was leaving, while vile republicans came & went at their pleasure. Robo-cops this time were provided by Milwaukie, on loan, i assume, to Oregon City. "Discrimination", i think the term would be, as republicans were treated as if they owned the cops which, i suppose, is the case. Does it have to be so blatant! When i first arrived & approached what appeared to be the perimeter, marked with police tape, one cop said i can't be there. I pointed out that i was outside the police tape. Over 120 supporters of John Kerry for President rallied outside the Pendleton Convention Center during VP Cheney and Gordon Smith's visit one day after the RNC. "We wanted to show the world that Eastern Oregon is not solidly in the Republican's pocket," said rally organizer, Benjamin Talley.
Don Butcher, one of the marchers, responded after the rally, "I was deeply moved today by the more than one hundred people showing up to demonstrate that a substantial population in our area demand that we move beyond the politics of militancy, cronyism, monotheism, etc., to an America of vision, wisdom, equality and inclusivity." As the Cheney meeting ended, many attendees leaving the Convention Center walked across the parking lot to join the Kerry supporters lining the street. The gathering reflected the diversity of Eastern Oregon -- retired folks, young people in dredlocks beating drums, Native Americans in tribal regalia, veterans, working people, professional people, young mothers and their children, and high school students.

According to couple of independent accounts, there were over 150 people there (media reports varied from "two dozen" to "over 75"). Cops managed to break us into several smaller groups as they were "sterilizing" the area around the school. I was under impression that Yakima cops didn't themselves know when and where the VP was coming in. That resulted in a lot of confusion and some blatant abuses of our constitutional rights to assemble and voice our opinions. We were pushed around from one city block to another only to be ordered to go back where we came from. Of course, they were probably flexing their muscle as well. This was the biggest day in the life of your average Yakima cop - he was responsible for the safety and security of our entire nation (mad logic).

 i went to the cheney thing at the airport. rode the max from pioneer square. froze my ass off like everybody else. it was interesting to see the police riding the max line. about 8 multnomah county sheriffs, wearing their new, military style fatigues boarded the train car in east portland. throughout the day the cops were alternately shaking down people they thought were protestors for their tickets and then telling people directions to their pen. it seemed like a capitalistic 2004 version of 1937 germany.
