Federal Buildings In Portland Close Due To VBIED Threat 2020-08-21

Federal courthouses close in Portland amid threat
Updated 10:32 AM; Today 8:58 AM

Multiple federal buildings in Portland, including a pair of courthouses, are closed Friday amid a threat.

Portland's federal bankruptcy court and Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse are both closed, along with a federal building near the Lloyd Center. The bankruptcy court cited an unspecified "threat of violence in the area" as the reason for its closure.

A source with knowledge of the situation said federal authorities received a threat that a vehicle filled with explosives would hit a federal building. The source didn't specify whether the threat was targeted at a specific federal building.

The threat came in Thursday and did not specify when the supposed crash would occur.

The FBI said it was investigating to figure out the credibility of the threat. The agency said it would notify the public if investigators develop information indicating a credible threat.

The FBI encouraged anyone who has information to submit a tip online or call 800-225-5324 or 503-224-4181.

The bankruptcy court said its lobby is inaccessible Friday but all its services would continue to operate remotely. Hearings at the Hatfield courthouse that were set for Friday will be rescheduled.
