The organization that blocked the Zenith Energy's North Portland terminal in April by planting a garden on the tracks leading to the company's export facility, today called for "rebellion" against a city government "that no longer has a meaningful claim to power." In a letter to Portland area residents, released today,, Extinction Rebellion PDX announced it will hold a rally at12:00 noon, this coming Friday, June 21, 2019, at Terry Schrunk Plaza, in Portland, to declare a "climate emergency" and call for mass disruption of business-as-usual, as a last ditch effort to force action on the climate change crisis.

Sarah Carlberg, an organizer with Extinction Rebellion PDX, wrote:

"People have been asking politely for decades for government to do something about this approaching crisis, with nothing but zip to show for it. But we can do the same thing here in Portland that people did on the streets in London, and we know that was phenomenal!"

Extinction Rebellion PDX will be joined at the Friday rally by Sunrise Movement Portland, part of a movement of youth activists that upended Washington DC politics last fall with lengthy sit-ins in Congressional offices, and forced the Green New Deal legislation, proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, onto the national agenda.

Shanice Clarke, a hub member for Sunrise Movement Portland, said "We are calling for a climate emergency, and demanding appropriate action and accountability, in Portland, in a timeframe that matters."

The international Extinction Rebellion movement was launched last fall in the UK, with a series of street disruptions that grew to tens of thousands of participants in April, and effectively shut down large sections of London for several weeks. On May 2, in response to Extinction Rebellion UK disruptions, the UK House of Commons became the first government in the world to declare a climate emergency.

Ken Ward, co-author of the Extinction Rebellion PDX letter, wrote:

"in taking emergency climate action - with the intention of ameliorating injustices of the past, situated within an ecological understanding of our place in the web of life on Earth, and imbued with knowledge, held in our very DNA, of just what it is that makes for truly satisfying and happy lives - lies the seeds of rebirth. If we do what is necessary, we will have a society that is more fulfilling, more equitable, more resilient, more nurturing, and more just."

Extinction Rebellion is an initiative of the Rising Up! network, which promotes a fundamental change of our political and economic system to one which maximizes well-being and minimizes harm. Change needs to be nurtured in a culture of reverence, gratitude and inclusion; whilst the tools of civil disobedience and direct action are used to express our collective power.
